A Study Tour
Last week witnessed a two-day study tour to Yichang to appreciate China’s engineering wonders and cultural heritage. Departing on March 29th, we lodged at the Research Base for immersive learning.
Upon arrival, we explored Tribe of the Three Gorges, enjoying the natural beauty and getting immersed in the local culture. The highlight was the evening campfire where students shared stories, sang songs, and participated in games under the starry sky, strengthening our bonds as classmates. Day two featured a cruise through the Three Gorges Dam locks, which was extraordinarily magnificent and breathtaking. Along the way, we enjoyed the splendid views of the dam and the Yangtze River.
This tour added a new dimension to my life. Not only did it broaden my horizons but it filled me with a profound sense of pride in our country. I will make every endeavour to equip myself with STEM knowledge in the hope of making contributions to the generations to come.

“It’s a tough job. Just do as much as you can,”Mr. Thompson said. Indeed, the task seemed so demanding. Not long after they started working, the heat and dust made them uncomfortable. Cameron’s arms ached from moving heavy boxes, and Barton’s back was sore from bending over. When they had to stop for a break, only a small part was finished. Although the thought of giving up crossed their minds, the brothers pushed it aside, thinking about how hard their parents had been working. The task took them over three hours, but they finally made the warehouse clean and tidy.
Cameron and Barton asked Mr. Thompson to come after they finished. Mr. Thompson’s eyes widened seeing the once chaotic space took on a completely new look, where everything was in order. He had not expected the brothers to do this job so well. Mr. Thompson handed them their wages, paying extra, and said, “You’ve earned this. By the way, I need some help over the summer. I wonder if you’re interested.” “We’d love to!” Cameron and Barton replied excitedly. Then the brothers went home merrily, eager to share their success with their parents.

M: What else
W: Oh, one more thing. They’ll want to know if you’re permitted to work in this country so your passport is necessary.
M: I see. Thank you.
Text 10
Hi everybody! I’m delighted to see so many of you here today for my introductory talk about the university music society. The society was originally set up fifty years ago by a group of tutors in the music department. They ran it themselves for the first ten years, and then handed over the organization of the society to students, and it has stayed that way ever since.
We invite experts to give talks on various different subjects throughout the year—we’ve had speakers telling us about pianos through the ages, and how to make drums. The first one of term is this evening, and it’s all about violins.
And next Wednesday, you’ll have a chance to hear our jazz group playing in a concert. Do you remember where the Kings Hall is, where you had your first-year welcome talk yesterday Well, the concert will be in the slightly smaller Union Hall, just opposite.
We have a competition every year for young composers. It took us a bit of time choosing a theme this year—in the past we’ve covered topics from nature to dance—the committee finally agreed it would be poetry, so we’ll see how that goes!荆州2024-2025学年高二下学期3月月考

I sold one of my cars and switched to an e-bike one year ago. I knew that I was doing something good for the planet. But I still viewed giving up my car as something reserved for the deeply committed and adventurous, something that Greenpeace volunteers did to make the world better. However, I live in Colorado; e-bike would mean freezing in the winter and sweating in the summer. It was the right thing to do, I thought, but it was not going to be fun.
I was very wrong. Biking to work was more than not unpleasant—it was entirely captivating. Before selling my car, I worried most about riding in the cold winter months. But I quickly learned that, as the saying goes, there is no bad weather, only bad clothes. I wear gloves, warm socks and a ski jacket when I ride, and I am almost never too cold. Instead, I feel warmer and stronger after the ride.
Though I, like many would-be cyclists, was worried about arriving at the office sweaty in hotter months, the e-bike solved my problem. Even when there was 35 degrees Celsius outside, I didn’t sweat, thanks to my bike’s pedal-assist mode(脚踏辅助模式). If I am honest, sometimes I didn’t even pedal; I just switched to pedal-assist mode, sat back and enjoyed my ride.
One day, shortly after selling our car, I hopped on my bike after a stressful day at work and rode home down a street edged with changing fall leaves. I felt more connected to the physical environment around me than I had when I’d traveled the same route surrounded by metal and glass. This, I have to say, inspired me to appreciate the beauty in my life and was what delighted me most on the bike.
Of course, e-bikes aren’t going to replace every car on every trip. In a country where uncontrolled stretching of suburbs and malls and unprotected bike paths are the norm, it’s unrealistic to expect e-bikes to replace cars in the way that the Model T (福特公司第一款大规模生产的汽车) replaced horses. But as an individual, making short trips on an e-bike would save money, cut carbon footprints, and improve health and well-being.
24. What did the author originally think of letting go of his car
A. Healthy. B. Tough. C. Fun. D. Terrifying.
25. What does the underlined word “captivating” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Fascinating. B. Challenging. C. Secure. D.Troublesome.
26. What did the author like best about the ride
A. Enjoying the beauty along the road. B. Relaxing in the pedal-assist mode.
C. Hurrying home after a stressful day. D. Being surrounded by metal and glass.
27. What can we infer from the last paragraph
A. E-bike will replace cars eventually.
B. It is advisable to make long trips on e-bikes.
C. Cyclists should do more to protect themselves.
D. E-bikes are economical and environmental-friendly.

According to a study published this week, habitual napping (小睡) appears to be associated with a large brain volume in adults although experts stressed that further research was needed. It reduces the cost caused from the lost time and the fatigue-related (与疲劳有关的) errors. The work followed previous studies that suggested a brief nap could improve people’s ability to learn.
Arianna Huffington, a co-founder of Huff Post and the founder and chief executive of Thrive Global, said, “Given the latest science on the effectiveness of napping and the clear link between employees feeling well rested and their productivity, it’s long past time that businesses embrace short naps at work.”
Some businesses, including Thrive Global, have already introduced facilities for employees to take naps. Google introduced sleep pods as far back as 2014 and companies like Nike and Ben&Jerry’s introduced nap rooms. The practice has even been adopted by the NHS, with a growing number of hospitals introducing sleep pods for staff in an effort to help them get more rest. Employees, it seems, are enthusiastic. Sean Greenwood, of Ben&Jerry’s, said, “If a quick nap gets employees more involved and creative, we’re happy to provide that for our team members.”
Unfortunately, the practice of napping still suffers from our collective concept that sleep equals weakness and laziness. However, the performance-enhancing benefits of naps have been no secret to many leaders throughout history. It also gives the higher-ups the chance to acknowledge the 24/7 culture and come up with top-down solutions that encourage workers to take care of themselves in and out of work.
While sleep experts stressed that a daytime doze could be beneficial, they said it was crucial to get enough shut-eye at the end of a day. It is the late stage of sleep, sometimes missed by early risers, that strengthens the nerve circuits that make for learning and memory, allowing the brain to make and consolidate new neutral connections. Additionally, prioritizing sufficient sleep during the regular nightly sleep period is essential for overall well-being.
28. What is paragraph 1 mainly about
A. The brain volume in adults.
B. Previous studies about napping.
C. A research finding published recently.
D. The link between napping and employees’ productivity.
29. What is Arianna Huffington’s attitude toward napping
A. Dismissive. B. Approving. C. Ambiguous. D. Indifferent.
30. Why are so many companies mentioned in the passage
A. To advocate enough rest. B. To present the current situation.
C. To compare the differences. D. To praise creative employees.
31. What will possibly be discussed in the paragraph that follows
A. The collective concept of napping. B. The benefits of napping.
C. The approaches to a sound sleep at night. D. The importance of well-bing.
D
In what they claim is a world first, researchers in Japan have developed chopsticks that artificially create the taste of salt, as part of efforts to reduce sodium (钠) levels in some of the country’s most popular dishes.
The chopsticks work using electrical stimulation and a mini-computer worn on the eater’s wristband. The device transmits sodium ions(离子) from food, through the chopsticks, to the mouth where they create a sense of saltiness, says Homei Miyashita, a professor at Meiji University in Tokyo, whose laboratory cooperated with the food and drink manufacturer Kirin to develop the device. The team plan to improve the first design and hope to make the chopsticks available to consumers next year.
The chopsticks could reach a large audience in Japan, where the traditional diet tends to be high in salt due to the use of components such as miso and soy sauce. The average Japanese adult consumes about 10 grams of salt a day, double the amount recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO). The health ministry has proposed reducing daily salt intake to a maximum of 7.5 grams for men and 6.5 grams for women.
The chopsticks use “very weak electricity—not enough to affect the human body—to adjust the function of ions such as sodium chloride and sodium glutamate to change the perception of taste by making food seem to taste stronger or weaker”, Miyashita said in a statement.
Miyashita said clinical tests on people who follow a low-sodium diet had confirmed that the device enhances the salty taste of low-sodium food by about 1.5 times. High salt intake can contribute to high blood pressure, the leading cause of heart attacks and strokes. “To prevent these diseases, we need to reduce the amount of salt we take,” said Miyashita. “If we try to avoid taking less salt in a conventional way, we would need to suffer the pain of cutting our favourite food from our diet, or suffer eating food with very little taste.” Miyashita’s lab has also invented a lickable TV screen that imitates the flavours of various foods.
32. What does the second paragraph mainly tell us
A. How the chopsticks work. B. What the team plans to do.
C. What the device is designed for. D. How a sense of saltiness is created.
33. What can be inferred from paragraph 3
A. Japanese diets are always high in salt.
B. The chopsticks may be popular in Japan.
C. A man should eat less than 6.5 grams of salt everyday.
D. The WHO advised an adult to take 20 grams of salt a day.
34. What do we know about the chopsticks according to Miyashita
A. They can cure heart attacks and strokes.
B. They use electricity to affect the human body.
C. They make food 1.5 times higher in salt content.
D. They help cut down salt without compromising on flavors.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Sodium does great harm to our health
B. Japanese less salty food gain popularity
C. High-techs imitating the flavours of salty foods
D. Japan invents e-chopsticks making food taste salty
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Have you ever woken up in the middle of the night with unhappy thoughts in your head Maybe you argued with your friend and remember everything about the argument. Perhaps you can’t stop worrying about all the things that could go wrong in an upcoming job interview. 36 That’s how we humans find out how to navigate our lives.
However, sometimes this navigation system goes out of control. Repetitive thinking can make it hard to see reality as it is, keeping us locked into bad thinking patterns that don’t work on us. 37 We may lose sleep, have less attention, or feel unhappy. What can we do instead Manage our thoughts by using the following ways to get good mental health.
Get some ideas. Taking the time to examine our repetitive thoughts and learn something from them may help change them from something troubling to something more useful. So try accepting your thoughts, examine them with more openness. 38
Move outside. Rumination means getting lost in your thoughts to the point where you feel stuck. Hundreds of studies show physical exercise can be helpful for reducing rumination. 39 As another study found, walking in the woods reduced rumination more than walking along a road for the same amount of time.
40 For example, practice paying attention to your breath and its changing patterns. Pay attention to feelings in your body — pain, differences in temperature, and so on. This can bring you into the present in a way that’ ll make thoughts disappear.
A. Take a deep breath.
B. Try to stay present in the moment.
C. And consider steps you can take to make things better.
D. When that happens, our mental health may be influenced.
E. Remembering the past or imagining the future isn’t unusual.
F. But being outside in nature may help above physical exercise.
G. Go out walking helps keep your attention on different things around.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Fifteen-year-old Cameron and twelve-year-old Barton lived in a town in Taxco. Their parents worked tirelessly day in and day out, yet still struggled to make ends meet. Cameron and Barton, both in middle school, witnessed their parents’ hard work and anxiety and decided to take action and offer their assistance.
As summer vacation began, while other children were enjoying their carefree time, Cameron and Barton had a different plan. They started the challenging journey of seeking part-time jobs. Their first attempt was at a local restaurant. Filled with hope, they stood before the manager with an eager expression. However, the manager looked at them critically and said, “You two are too young!” Their hearts sank instantly. Cameron felt a sense of deep disappointment, thinking, “How can we prove ourselves if no one gives us a chance “Barton’s face fell as he asked his brother, “Will we ever find a job ”
Not discouraged by the rejection, they then went to a store named Thompson’s Grocery, hoping to become assistants. “Hello, you must be Mr. Thompson. We’re here to apply for the job,” Cameron said. Barton stood on tiptoe and handed a card from their school’s help-wanted board to Mr. Thompson behind the counter, who was the owner and seemed to be a kind person. However, before they could say more, he shook his head.
“This job is too hard for you kids,” he said. “I need someone big and strong.” “Let us give it a try, and if you don’t like our work, don’t pay us.” Cameron begged. He stared at the brothers, who were so sincere, then nodding. Next, he led them to the warehouse(仓库) of the store. It seemed as if they had never been sorted or cleaned. Cameron and Barton were assigned to clear away the items.
