Nobody knows the value of a good doll better than Jandrisevits. “Dolls have a power we don’t completely understand,” she said. It’s a conclusion she came to while working as a social worker using dolls to help her young clients adapt to their changing medical situations. Many of the kids saw themselves in those dolls. But for the kids missing a limb or who had lost their hair, there were none they could relate to.
So, seven years ago, when a friend revealed that her child was stuck in self-doubt and self-distrust, Jandrisevits, now 49, knew what might help the youth through this potentially challenging period. “It’s hard to tell a kid, ‘You are perfect the way you are,’ and to build self-esteem (自尊) that way, but never offer them anything that looks like them,”she says.
Jandrisevits went about changing that. She crafted a doll by hand — using fabric, stitching, and markers — that resembled (像) her friend’s child and sent it off. After the friend posted a photo online of the happy child and doll, another woman asked Jandrisevits to make a doll that looked like her baby, who was missing a leg.
Word spread, and soon Jandrisevits was making dolls for children with scars, birthmarks, facial deformities(畸形), — in short, a doll that looked like them. She quit her job and started a nonprofit, A Doll Like Me.
Working out of her home in Milwaukee, from photos sent by parents or caregivers, it takes Jandrisevits roughly three days to craft only one doll. A GoFundMe page helps her cover costs and allows her to donate her services. She hasn’t charged for a doll since she began her nonprofit.
In all, she’s made more than 400 dolls. The waiting list is long, but Jandriscvits will never give up. As she explains on her GoFundMe page, “Every kid, regardless of gender, ethnicity, age, medical issue, or body type, should look into the sweet face of a doll and see their own.”
24.What made Jandrisevits realize the value of dolls
A.The influence of dolls on her. B.Her working experience.
C.The changing medical situations. D.Her relation to the unlucky kids.

A dried-out plain in the north of Sacramento, California was in perfect condition to fuel wildfires. It was 2014, and California was experiencing its worst drought in decades. The plain was full of dry brush. Fire prevention workers and ecologists in the state were desperately working to reduce potential wildfire fuel sources anywhere they could. Ecologists, facing a dangerously dry plain and a price tag of at least one million dollars for a major construction project to fix the site, did something surprising. They called in the beavers (河狸).
Thanks to the introduction of the animals, the site was, restored to a lively plain, with trees popping up and streams flowing across the land. Damon Ciotii, a biologist who led the project, said he was amazed by the results of the project. He had estimated that the beavers would take about a decade to return the dried-out land to streams in the region, but the animals blew away his expectations. By year three, water was back. Ultimately, the project only cost $58,000, which was used to prepare the land for the beavers to come in and do what they do.
Beavers have essentially evolved to be the engineers of nature, transforming their landscape to suit their needs and to protect them from predators. They are quick in the water and can build dams (水堤) to make ponds and wetlands where they can better survive.
The population of beavers in North America was once driven down due to heavy hunting. However, after the desire for beaver hats and coats reduced, the population began to recover. The success of the project has led to a number of other projects using beavers for land restoration through California. Government programs were beginning to take notice and offer training to local people on how to use beavers for wildfire prevention.
28. Why was Ciotii surprised by the project
A. It cost significantly less money. B. It used animals to solve the issue.
C. It took effect quicker than expected. D. It changed the land into a lively plain.
29. How did the beavers reduce the wildfire fuel sources
A. They ate the dry bush. B. They protected dams.
C. They created water bodies. D. They helped the trees grow better.
30. What do we know about beavers in North America
A. They are trained to stop wildfire. B. They were threatened by humans.
C. They got protected for their roles in ecology. D. They are the main solution to the wildfire problem.
31. What is the purpose of this text
A. To present a study on beavers behavior.
B. To illustrate the cause and effect of wildfire.
C. To introduce the benefits of working with animals.
D. To inform the use of beavers in wildfire prevention.
D
Do you have a favorite sport Are you passionate about sewing or reading Typically, you engage in these activities simply because you enjoy them. Would you be greatly surprised to know the overjustification effect that when you are rewarded for your beloved activities, your desire to participate in them diminishes
Edward Deci, a psychology professor, conducted a series of experiments, in one of which Deci divided the participants into two groups: one was paid to complete a puzzle, and the other was not paid to. After money was removed, the group that was previously paid to play showed less motivation to complete the task than the group that was never paid and only did the puzzle for enjoyment. The outcome demonstrated the overjustification effect, which occurs when an external stimulation decreases a person’s internal motivation to perform a behavior or engage in an activity.
According to the self-determination theory, three conditions are essential for people to feel internally motivated and perform at their best; autonomy, freedom from external restrictions; competence, the need to feel capable, and relatedness, the need to feel connected with others. In Deci’s experiment, money acted as a tie, which reduced participants’ autonomy, a crucial component of internal motivation, discouraging them from experiencing the freedom of external restrictions. The pressure to perform for the money lessened the pleasure and freedom felt by those who were doing the puzzle merely for fun.
But if external stimulation is tied to performance, the overjustification effect is less influential. For example, being rewarded for studying is unlikely to decrease internal motivation because the grade depends upon actually doing well rather than just going through the motions.
While the overjustification effect can reduce motivation, some strategies can lower its impact. One is to focus on providing feedback and recognition rather than concrete rewards. For instance, praising an individual’s effort or acknowledging their accomplishments can maintain their internal motivation. Additionally, allowing individuals to have autonomy and control over their tasks also works. By giving them the freedom to choose how they complete tasks, individuals are more likely to be internally motivated and experience a greater sense of satisfaction and engagement.
32. What does the underlined word “diminishes” in paragraph 1 mean
A. Remains. B. Weakens. C. Disappears. D. Expands.
33. How did Deci prove the overjustification effect in the experiment
A. By making a comparison. B. By measuring the time of completing puzzles.
C. By interpreting a concept. D. By contrasting results with previous experiments.
34. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about
A. The skills needed for a puzzle. B. The core elements of inner drives.
C. The impact of autonomy on competence. D. The theoretical basis for the overjustification effect.
35. Which serves as an example of preventing the overjustification effect
A. Speaking highly of a pupil’s hard work.
B. Rewarding a kid with candy for playing the violin.
C. Offering a clerk financial bonuses for daily routines.
D. Promising an employee a decent position for doing his duty.

It was the first day of our new grade. Everyone in the classroom was chatting happily, excited to see each other again after the long holidays. When the door slid open, all of us stopped talking and turned to look. In came our teacher Ms. Sullivan, followed by a plain-looking boy.
“This is Rafael,” Ms. Sullivan announced. “He is a transfer student (转校生), and he’s going to be in our class starting from today. Make sure all of you welcome him warmly.”
The class clapped. But I didn’t want to have a second look at the newcomer, for he had no outstanding qualities considering his small figure and casual T-shirt.
“Oh, I forgot to mention one thing,” Ms. Sullivan spoke up. “Rafael actually has hearing problems. Normally he would have hearing aids on, but his old ones have just been broken. His doctor suggested that he stay at home until he got his new ones. However, Rafael insisted on attending his first day of school. So if you want to communicate with him, you have to write it on a piece of paper.”
This single speech sent the whole class up into an uproar (嘈杂). Some students looked at each other with expressions of surprise. Others voiced cries of concern out of pity.
Ms. Sullivan calmed everyone down. “I’d like someone to personally help him out throughout the day. Do I have any volunteers ”
“How can a disabled person be intelligent ” I thought to myself. I refused to raise my hand, expecting someone else would. But nobody did or said anything. Dead silence spread across the classroom.
It was by total bad luck that my eyes happened to meet Ms. Sullivan’s. “How about you, James ” she asked me. “Is it okay for you to take care of Rafael just for today ” It is difficult to refuse a request by someone, especially if that person is a teacher. I sighed and nodded slightly. Ms. Sullivan gestured for Rafael to sit beside me and then asked us to share our holiday stories with the class.
Immediately, the class became excited. _____________________________________________

根据第二段“After money was removed, the group that was previously paid to play showed less motivation to complete the task than the group that was never paid and only did the puzzle for enjoyment.(在钱被拿走后,之前被付钱玩的一组比从未被付钱只为享受而玩拼图的一组表现出更少的动力来完成任务)”可知,Deci是通过把实验人员分成两组后进行对比以证明过度合理化效应的,故选A。
根据第三段“According to the self-determination theory, three conditions are essential for people to feel internally motivated and perform at their best; autonomy, freedom from external restrictions; competence, the need to feel capable, and relatedness, the need to feel connected with others. In Deci’s experiment, money acted as a tie, which reduced participants’ autonomy, a crucial component of internal motivation, discouraging them from experiencing the freedom of external restrictions. The pressure to perform for the money lessened the pleasure and freedom felt by those who were doing the puzzle merely for fun.(根据自我决定理论,人们要有内在动力并表现出最佳状态,必须具备三个条件;自治,不受外部限制;能力,感觉自己有能力的需要,关系,感觉与他人联系的需要。在德西的实验中,金钱充当了一条纽带,它降低了参与者的自主性,而自主性是内部动机的一个重要组成部分,使他们不愿体验外部限制下的自由。为了钱而做拼图的压力降低了那些仅仅为了好玩而做拼图的人所感受到的快乐和自由)”可知,本段主要介绍的是过度合理化效应的理论基础,故选D。
【35题详解】推理判断题。根据最后一段“While the overjustification effect can reduce motivation, some strategies can lower its impact. One is to focus on providing feedback and recognition rather than concrete rewards. For instance, praising an individual’s effort or acknowledging their accomplishments can maintain their internal motivation.(虽然过度合理化效应会降低动机,但一些策略会降低其影响。一种是专注于提供反馈和认可,而不是具体的奖励。例如,赞扬一个人的努力或承认他们的成就可以保持他们的内在动机)”可知,赞扬一个人的努力或认可他们的成就可以保持他们的内在动力。由此推知,A项“高度评价一个学生的勤奋学习”可以预防过度合理化效应,故选A。

However, finding good books to read can sometimes be difficult.(毫无疑问,阅读很重要。
【37题详解】根据上文“First, read what you like. Far too many people limit themselves to bestseller lists or want only to read the “right” books. However, what appears to be right for others may not suit your reading tastes. People are more likely to enjoy reading a book when its subject has already interested them.(首先,读你喜欢的。

【39题详解】根据本段内容“Your local library is a perfect place. There’s usually at least one librarian in every building who enjoys talking about books of all sorts. Tell them about your interests and they can help you find books that you will love. Your school teacher is another good person to turn to if you’re hesitating.(你当地的图书馆是一个完美的地方。每栋楼里通常至少有一个图书管理员喜欢谈论各种各样的书。告诉他们你的兴趣,他们可以帮你找到你会喜欢的书。如果你犹豫不决,你的学校老师是另一个可以求助的人)”可知,本段的建议是向他人求助或征求意见,A选项ask an expert for advice对应后文turn to。故A选项“向专家征求意见也是个好主意”符合语境,故选A。
【40题详解】根据上文“Launch a book exchange.(发起图书交换活动)”以及后文“Get your friends together and trade your favorite books. Even if they are not exactly bookworms (书虫), you can still encourage each other to read and share. If possible, you can also look for book exchange opportunities in your community.(把你的朋友聚在一起,交换你最喜欢的书。即使他们不是书虫,你们仍然可以鼓励彼此阅读和分享。如果可能的话,你也可以在你的社区寻找交换书籍的机会)”可知,本段建议发起图书交换活动,后文提到了操作方法,推测本句说明这么做的好处。故D选项“这是一个免费建立个人图书馆的好方法”符合语境,故选D。
