Chinese AI Model DeepSeek-R1 Stuns the World
January 20, 2025, a Chinese tech company named DeepSeek made a new AI called DeepSeek-R1. This smart program can solve math problems, write code, and answer questions like top models such as OpenAI’s GPT-40, but it costs much less to build. The team spent only $5.58 million (1/70 of OpenAI’s cost) and used 2, 048 computer chips for two months. This shows that good ideas can beat big money.
DeepSeek-R1 learns by trying many times and getting better, like how students practice maths. Other AIs need lots of prepared examples, but R1 improves by itself. For example, in a global math test, it got 79. 8% right, slightly higher than OpenAI’s model. A simple version of R1 can even run on low-cost computers, helping schools and small companies.
DeepSeek-R1 is free to use and change. On its first day online, over 19,000 programmers worldwide started projects to study it. A German scientist said experiments with R1 cost $10 instead of $300 with other AIs. Even Meta (a famous U. S. tech company) top scientist said, “This kind of free AI could change the world.”
U.S. tech companies are worried. Meta plans to spend $65 billion more on AI research. Experts say China is catching up fast. A report in Nature magazine called R1 a “big step forward”, proving that smart ideas beat expensive tools.
As a DeepSeek engineer said, “We want AI to be a friend, not something only rich people can use.” With R1, China shows the world that great things come from new ideas and hard work, not just money.
1. What is the main purpose of the article
A. To compare Chinese and American AI technologies.
B. To introduce a low-cost AI model from China.
C. To explain how computer chips work.
D. To encourage students to become programmers.
2. How much did it cost to train DeepSeek-R1
A. $5.58 million. B. $65 billion. C. $10. D. $300.
3. Where is probably this passage from
A. Textbook. B. Science magazine.
C. News report. D. Brochure.
B
Le Ann Solmonson, a professional counselor (顾问) in Nacogdoches, Texas, has seen families fall into a pattern as children reach adolescence (青春期): The youth want more autonomy and begin to push against their parents’ rules. In response, the parents tighten their control or give punishment, only to have the adolescent push back harder and break more rules. Thus conflicts happen.
“Adolescents’ goal is to figure out ‘Who am I Where do I fit in ’ and begin that separation from their parents. Some of that development leads to trying out new things,” says Solmonson. “These are natural things that can fuel disagreements.”
In counseling, Solmonson often asks a teen and his or her parents to name a small conflict they struggle with. She invites the teen to explain his or her views about the disagreement. Then, she encourages the parents to give their views and repeat what their child said. Usually, the parents immediately jump to why the teen’s take is wrong. If this happens, Solmonson will remind them that she wants to hear what they think of their child’s view is, not whether it’s right or wrong. She also gives the adolescent the same assignment: Paraphrase (转述) your parents’ position without giving an opinion on what was said. The aim, she explains, is to develop understanding toward the other party’s viewpoint.
Parents often need to work on how they respond to their teen when what they see as a mistake occurs. Cooperating with the teen to find out what led to the situation and what they need to solve it will prevent them furthering the conflict, Solmonson stresses. Instead of responding in anger, she coaches parents to use supportive statements like “That must have been so stressful. How can we prevent that happening again ”
Moreover, Solmonson often stresses that if parents want respect during disagreements with their child, they’ll need to show it themselves. If a teen answers disrespectfully, Solmonson coaches parents to respond saying, “I’m going to give you a do-over. Do you need a minute to think about how to say that ” rather than blowing up in anger.
4. What do children expect to do when turning adolescents
A. Prevent parent-child conflicts. B. Control their anger.
C. Become more independent. D. Set new boundaries.
5. What is parents’ common response to Solmonson’s question in counseling
A. Summarizing their experience. B. Pointing out the child’s risk-taking behaviors.
C. Offering their opinions about disagreements. D. Explaining the wrongness of the child’s views.
6. What is Solmonson’s advice for parents when their teen makes a mistake
A. Deal with it on their own. B. Work together for its cause.
C. Ignore it without discussion. D. Give immediate punishment.
7. What can we know from the last paragraph
A. Parents should model respect for their teens. B. Teens often disrespect their parents.
C. It is necessary for parents to blow up angrily. D. Disagreements are hard to solve.
C
On a soulless roundabout at a motorway crossroads, next door to a Burger King and opposite McDonald’s, stands a newcomer to the world of fast-food in France: a boulangerie, or French bakery. With sufficient parking, the boulangerie offers its car-borne customers a variety of choices. The boulangerie is traditionally a feature of the village square or high street. Yet now, it is taking off as an out-of-town drive-in or drive-to experience.
It is an unexpected time for the baguette (法式长棍面包) to spread, let alone on the country’s city edges. Rising energy and flour prices have pushed the price of the humble stick over the symbolic one euro in some places. Older folks still recall the time in the 1970s when it went for one French franc. Yet in 2022 more new boulangeries opened their doors in France than closed, according to Altares, a research group. Across the country 2,538 new bakeries set up shop last year. In the Paris region, the fastest growth has taken place not in the capital’s built-up walkable centre, but its low-density (低密度的) outer suburbs - meeting the need of the motorist.
Marie Blachere, a chain of boulangeries which started their business on car-accessible edge-of-town sites, now has over 700 outlets across France; 70 opened last year alone. It provides industrial-scale kitchens for hand-made baguettes, made from dough prepared, kneaded and baked on the site, a condition in France for use of the label boulangerie. With turnover of over ?550m, it ranks as one of the top ten fast-food chains in France. In the city of Chartres, Cyril Avert boulangerie serves baguettes to motorists at the wheel, as a pure drive-through service. So does Jules & John, in over 20 towns in France.
The drive-in or drive-to fashion is not welcome news for the boulangeries on narrow town-centre streets, many of which are struggling with rising costs. But it does reflect a stubborn fact about France, which those who govern from its city centres ignore. In 2021, 82% of French households owned at least one vehicle, and many in outer suburbs and semi-rural parts depend on it for work. The French remain as attached to their daily, or even twice-daily, baguette as they do to their use of the car.
8. Who are the target customers of the recently-opened baguette bakeries
A. Hurrying drivers. B. Leisurely motorists.
C. Fashionable youths. D. Out-of-town tourists.
9. Why are many brands of boulangeries mentioned in paragraph 3
A. To introduce brands of boulangeries.
B. To emphasize profits from boulangeries.
C. To demonstrate boulangeries’ expansion.
D. To present conditions for opening a new boulangerie.
10. What might be the author’s attitude towards the drive-in or drive-to practice
A. Unclear. B. Doubtful.
C. Favorable. D. Objective.
11. Which can be the best title for the text
A. Boulangeries: Suffering Booming Price
B. Baguettes and Vehicles: Going Hand in Hand
C. Boulangeries: Springing Up in Unexpected Places
D. Baguettes: the Symbol of Traditional French Cuisine
D
Need for closure is a psychological term that describes a person's desire for a firm answer to a question. Our need for closure is our natural preference for definite answers over confusion and uncertainty. Every person has their own baseline level of need for closure. It likely evolved via natural selection.
What I find really fascinating is how our need for closure is affected by the situation we're in. Our need for closure rises when we have to act rather than just observe, and it matters much more when we're rushed, or bored, or tired. Any stress can make our discomfort with uncertainty increase, and a high need for closure negatively influences some of our most important decisions: who we decide to trust, whether we admit we're wrong and even how creative we are.
In hiring, for instance, a high need for closure leads people to put far too much weight on their first impression. It's called the Urgency Effect. In one experiment, psychologists tried to lower people's need for closure by telling them, right before participants are about to make various judgments of a job candidate, that they'll be responsible in some way for them, or that their judgments have serious consequences.
In making any big decision, it's not enough just to know that we should take our time. We all know that important decisions shouldn't be rushed. The problem is that we don't keep that advice in mind when it matters. So, one of the best solutions is to formalize the reminders. Before making important decisions, write down not just advantages and disadvantages but what the consequences could be. Also, think about how much pressure you're under. If your need for closure is particularly high that day, it's even more important to think twice.
12. How does "need for closure" probably come into being
A. By accident. B. By nature.
C. By acquiring. D. By imitating.
13. It can be inferred that a high need for closure ______.
A. brings about more stress
B leads to not so good decisions
C. causes discomfort and uncertainty
D. promotes one's creativity
14. In the experiment the psychologists reduced participants’ need for closure by telling them to ______.
A. value their first impression
B. be responsible for their boss
C. be cautious about their judgments
D. pay little attention to the consequences
15. What would the author probably discuss in the paragraph that follows
A. More helpful solutions to high need for closure.
B. Some serious consequences of making decisions.
C. Other approaches to making important decisions.
D. Another strategy to escape the pressures of modern life.

An Unforgettable Thanksgiving
We were living in Jakarta, Indonesia. However, our family of six had to experience a holiday without my wife, Esther, who was in Singapore. This meant that I was in charge of our four children. It was a struggle, putting in part-time at the union mission office, then coming home to manage the children.
Shortly after arriving in Indonesia, I made friends with some of the employees at the United States embassy, where a number of United States marines (海军陆战队) were stationed, and I had great conversations with them. I checked out films from the United States Information Service office on the embassy to show to our children and neighbors.
With Thanksgiving week upon us I thought what we would do to celebrate. Many thoughts ran through my mind. The film about the National Football League game of the week could be checked out for a few days.
The Sunday before Thanksgiving, the quiet of our house was disrupted by the sound of a jeep. We heard it drive up and stop in our driveway. Before we could determine who had come to visit us, a big muscular man was knocking at our door. It was Willie, one marine guard stationed at the United States Embassy. He held a big box in his arms, leaving me instructions: “Pastor Jones, let’s have a real nice Thanksgiving dinner together, OK ” Then out the door he went, “I’ll bring four other marine guards”. I immediately investigated the contents of the box: a frozen turkey and a half-gallon container of Magnolia ice cream — Singapore’s best brand.
The next day I walked from our union mission office to our home. I came across one of my newly-made friends, Tim. He was walking along, depressed and downhearted. I greeted him and asked, “What’s the matter, Tim ”
“Pastor Jones,” he said, “this is our first Thanksgiving away from home, and my wife and I are in the dumps. We went shopping for a turkey for Thanksgiving, and all we could find was a lot of skinny chickens. No turkeys anywhere. Thanksgiving will be no perfect despite my wife’s excellent cooking skills.”
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

No turkey First Thanksgiving away from home I made a deal with Tim on the spot. If he would ask his wife to prepare the turkey, they could take part of it for themselves and let the marines from the U. S. embassy eat the rest of it. “Yes!” he responded quickly, as if to seal the deal before I could change my mind. “She’ll be glad to do that.” Later that day Tim was at my home to get the big frozen turkey. A day later he returned the “marine” portion of the cooked bird with many words of appreciation. When Thanksgiving Day came, we five Joneses were ready. We had the National Football League game of the week to watch after dinner. We had the “marine” part of the turkey on a platter with all the trimmings.
At the appointed time we heard the jeep from the embassy at the gate of our house. The hungry marines all wearing civilian clothes, got out of the jeep and eagerly entered our house, where the aroma of food filled the air. What a dinner that was and how unusual—five marines, four children and me! When the meal was finished, they wanted to go outside and shoot basketball on our little court. My children enjoyed watching them shoot baskets and laugh at one another. It was truly a fun time! Returning to the house, we served the pie and ice cream, watched the football game, and finally said goodbye. The food was abundant and delicious, the fellowship was superb, the recreation was relaxing. An unforgettable Thanksgiving!
