After taking an introductory course in global health last winter, Yashaswi Bista, president of Stanford SupplyHe, was empowered to take action against malaria---a disease that has been claiming hundreds of thousands of lives every year for centuries.
Stanford SupplyHe, a student group supporting women's health through art, hosted an event in partnership with United to Beat Malaria (UBM) to encourage funding for malaria prevention, treatment and research initiatives while tabling at White Plaza on Monday. “Knowing that malaria is especially dangerous to pregnant individuals and children makes advocacy for malaria funding and research essential for our mission,” said Bista.
“We in the U.S. need to be aware of the impact of global warming on malaria because less developed countries in other parts of the world are more heavily affected by our emissions,” Bista said. Last year, the U.S. experienced its first local outbreaks of malaria since 2003. Infectious disease experts have warned that climate change will spread malaria and other diseases carried by mosquitoes to areas that were once free of malaria.
This summer, after discovering the work of UBM, a global grassroots campaign of the UN Foundation, Bista met with her congressional representatives to advocate for malaria treatment and research. To support continued funding for global malaria programs, Bista wrote to officials in Congress. “It’s easy for people to feel like they are powerless with issues as big as malaria. But any person can give input to their decision makers on issues as big as these,” wrote Maegan Cross, a senior advocate at UBM. "By sending messages to your elected official in support of global health funding, you are making sure your voice is heard.”
Bista encouraged students to become involved in initiatives on campus to spread awareness of malaria and other global health issues: “Global health is important to me because there are so many health inequities around the world and health itself is important to live a fulfilling life,” Bista said. “Because there are so many health inequities around the world, I want to raise awareness and help people live fulfilling lives.”

In a new set of studies, researchers found that people showed greater goal commitment and performance when they told their goal to someone they believed had higher status (地位) than themselves. In these studies, higher-status people were those who the participants thought had more prestige (威望) than they did.
In one study, 17l undergraduate students were seated at computers and told they had to move a slider (滑块) on the screen to the number 50 as many times as possible within the given time. After counting how many times they successfully did this, they had to do it again, but this time they were told to set and write down a goal.
The experimenter then informed the participants that a lab assistant would come around and check on their goals. In some cases, the lab assistant was dressed in a suit and introduced himself as a doctoral student in the business school who was an expert on today’s study topic. For other participants, the same lab assistant dressed in casual clothing and introduced himself as a student at a local community college who was working part time at the business school. A third group of participants didn’t share their goals with the lab assistant.
Results showed that participants who shared their goals with the higher-status lab assistant reported they were more willing to achieve the goal they set for themselves than those who told the lower-status assistant. And participants who shared their goal with the lower-status assistant performed no better than those who told no one about their goal. “These findings provide evidence that refutes popular media recommendations that one should stay silent about a goal,” said Howard Klein, lead author of the new study.
“Contrary to what you may have heard, in most cases you get more benefit from sharing your goal than if you don’t as long as you share it with someone whose opinion you value,” Klein said. “You don’t want him to think less of you because you didn’t achieve your goal.”
8.Why did the lab assistant change his clothes
A.To approach the students more easily. B.To act out roles of different status.
C.To work for different business schools. D.To avoid being recognized by the students.
9.What does the underlined word “refutes” in Paragraph 4 probably mean
A.Deals with. B.Catches up with. C.Says no to. D.Relies on.
10.Why do we benefit from sharing our goals with the right person
A.We care about what he thinks of us.
B.We get useful advice and support from him.
C.We improve ourselves according to his opinions.
D.We find a strong sense of purpose by sharing.
11.What might be the suitable title for the text
A.Share your goals — but do use the right words
B.Share your goals — but be careful who you tell
C.Share your goals — and you’ll surely achieve them
D.Share your goals — and you’ll get mentally strong
D
Research reveals that not only brain cells, but also cells from other body parts, can store memories. This discovery offers new insights into memory function and potential treatments for memory - related issues, according to New York University. The research aimed to explore whether non - brain cells contribute to memory by applying the massed - spaced effect — a principle suggesting that information is remembered better when learned over multiple periods rather than through intensive study in a single session.
In their study, published in Nature Communications, scientists investigated two types of non - brain human cells in a laboratory setting. These cells were exposed to various chemical signals, similar to how brain cells respond to neurotransmitters (神经递质) during learning. In response, the non - brain cells activated a “memory gene” — the same gene that brain cells use for detecting patterns and restructuring their connections to form memories. To monitor this process, the researchers engineered the cells to produce a fluorescent protein, allowing them to track when the memory gene was turned on or off.
The results showed that these cells could detect repeated chemical signals, similar to neurotransmitter bursts in the brain, rather than extended ones. This mirrors how brain cells register learning with spaced breaks instead of learning everything all at once. When signals were spaced out, the “memory gene” was activated more strongly and for a longer time than when delivered all at once. “This reflects the massed - spaced effect,” says Kukushkin, a clinical associate professor at NYU. “It shows that repeated learning is a fundamental property of all cells.”
“This discovery opens new doors for understanding how memory works and could lead to better ways to enhance learning and treat memory - related issues,” observes Kukushkin. “It also suggests that in the future, we may need to treat our body like the brain, considering how systems such as digestion or cancer cells ‘remember’ patterns to regulate blood sugar or respond to the pattern of cancer treatment.”
What does the massed - spaced effect illustrate
A. The brain stores memory during deep sleep.
B. Spacing learning over time improves memory.
C. Memory is stored only when repeated continuously.
D. Learning everything in one session reduces memory.
13. What is the underlined word “fluorescent protein” refer to
A. A neurotransmitter produced by brain cells.
B. A type of chemical signal released by cells.
C. A protein found only in brain - related research.
D. A substance that indicates active memory genes.
14. What can be learned from the research in paragraph 3
A. All cells possess the basic characteristic of repeated learning.
B. Cells do not respond to chemical signals during spacing learning.
C. Intensive learning is more effective than spaced learning.
D. The brain only uses extended bursts of neurotransmitters.
15. What could be a suitable title for this article
A. Exploring Memory Function
B. The Impact of Chemical Signals on Memory Formation
C. How Brain Cells Detect Patterns during Learning
D. The Role of Non-Brain Cells in Memory Storage

I never imagined that a single piece of paper could change my entire perspective on life. I was a librarian, a job that had defined my existence for over two decades. My days were spent among the quiet rows of books. I knew every corner of the library, every book of the shelves, and yet, I felt as if my own life was missing a chapter.
It was a typical Tuesday morning. I was sorting through a box of old donations, preparing to catalog some rare books, when I found a small, yellowed envelope between the pages of an ancient volume. It was unaddressed, with no stamp and no indication of its origin. Curious, I carefully opened it. The handwriting was elegant but faded. The letter inside read:
I read the letter over and over, feeling a strange mix of emotions. The words resonated deeply within me, as if they were written specifically for me. I had always been content with my life, but lately, I felt a growing sense of restlessness. The library was my sanctuary(庇护所), but it had also become my prison. I had lost sight of my own dreams, my own story.
That evening, as I closed the library, I couldn't shake the feeling that the letter was a sign. I had always been cautious, preferring the safety of routine to the uncertainty of change. But the letter determined me that life was meant to be lived, not just observed.

Version:
The next morning, I walked into the library director's office, saying with resolution, “I have an idea." The director looked up from her desk, her eyes filled with curiosity. Taking a deep breath, I explained my idea to organize a moveable library program, bringing books and stories to those who had no access. I suggested reaching out to schools, nursing homes, and shelters-places where people might need a little bit of hope and connection. The director's expression softened, and she nodded thoughtfully.“That's a wonderful idea," she agreed. With her support, I threw myself into the project. After hours of planning, contacting local organizations, and gathering resources, I enlisted the help of a few enthusiastic volunteers. The preparation work went smoothly.
Weeks later, the moveable library program started, bringing libraries to different communities. The first stop was a local elementary school, where we set up a reading corner in the library, equipped with colorful books and cozy seats. As I read aloud to a group of wide-eyed children, I saw their faces light up with wonder. For a moment, I forgot about my own doubts and fears. I was reminded of the joy that books could bring, and the importance of sharing that joy with others. The following months witnessed our library touched the lives of countless people in diverse places ranging from nursing homes, orphanages to hospitals. Each visit was a reminder of the letter's words: “You have the power to change your world, one small act at a time.”
D 原文提到“The instant New York Times bestseller. End the struggle, speak up for what you need, and experience the freedom of being truly yourself. Healthy boundaries. .... But what do ‘healthy boundaries’ really mean—and how can we successfully express our needs, say ‘no,’ and be decisive without offending others ”这段话明确指出,这本书的重点是“建立健康的边界”,并解释了如何成功地表达需求、说“不”以及在不冒犯他人的情况下做出决定。
C Mylèk Teele的评价是:“Set Boundaries, Find Peace is a down-to-earth guide on fully realizing your potential... Eye-opening and thoroughly engaging.”
B 根据“FREE delivery: Friday, March 21 on orders shipped by Amazon over $35.”
A 根据 “After taking an introductory course in global health last winter, Yashaswi Bista... was empowered to take action against malaria” 可知,是一次学习经历启发了 Bista 对抗疟疾,答案是 A。B 选项 “A health crisis”(健康危机)、C 选项 “A grassroots campaign”(草根运动)、D 选项 “A tabling event”(摆摊活动)均不是5. C 文中提到 “Stanford SupplyHer... hosted an event... to encourage funding for malaria prevention”,说明 Bista 通过组织活动来筹款支持疟疾防治,答案是 C。A 选项 “She organized a charity sale”(她组织了一场慈善义卖)、B 选项 “She launched a research project”(她发起了一个研究项目)、D 选项 “She budgeted for malaria treatment”(她为疟疾治疗做预算)在文中均未提及。
D Macgan Cross 说 “By sending messages to your elected officials in support of global health funding, you are making sure your voice is heard”,强调个人向决策者表达意见的重要性,即个人努力在政府决策中很重要,答案是 D。A 选项 “Community voices secure health funding”(社区声音确保健康资金)、B 选项 “Malaria outbreaks are difficult to prevent”(疟疾爆发难以预防)、C 选项 “The public needs more knowledge about health”(公众需要更多健康知识)均不符合文意。
B 选项 “A club founder”(俱乐部创始人),文章重点强调她在健康倡导方面的行为;C 选项 “A woman pioneer”(女性先驱)、D 选项 “A disease specialist”(疾病专家)不符合对她的描述。
10. A 根据文章最后一段 “‘You don’t want him to think less of you because you didn’t achieve your goal.’”
B 选项 “Share your goals—but be careful who you tell”(分享你的目标 —— 但要注意你告诉的对象)符合文章主旨,故选 B。A 选项中 “do use the right words” 在文中未提及;C 选项 “you’ll surely achieve them” 过于绝对,分享目标并不意味着一定会实现目标;D 选项 “you’ll get mentally strong” 文中没有相关内容。
The research aimed ... the massed-spaced effect-a principle suggesting that information is remembered better when learned over multiple periods rather than through intensive study in a single session.
To monitor this process, the researchers engineered the cells to produce a fluorescent protein, allowing them to track when the memory gene was turned on or off.
14.A由第三段最后一句“It shows that repeated learning is a fundamental property of all cells."可知,重复学习是所有细胞的一个基本特性,故选A。
15.D整篇文章的主要内容是探讨身体其他部位的细胞如何通过响应化学信号参与记忆的形成,故选D。
16. B前文阐述了庆祝对幸福的重要性,如能让身心休息、重新建立联系等,后文则开始具体说明庆祝如何让生活更健康快乐。B 选项 “So, what makes celebrating so good for you ”(那么,是什么让庆祝对你如此有益呢?)
F 选项 “Celebrations do more than mark milestones or holidays.”(庆祝不仅仅是纪念里程碑或节日。)
C 选项 “Make sure to set small goals and celebrate them.”(确保设定小目标并庆祝它们。)
E 选项 “You’ll prove to yourself just how great you really are.”(你会向自己证明你有多棒。)
作为段首句,概括了该段的核心内容,即庆祝所带来的积极影响,且 “spreads positivity” 与后文 “spark an energy of joy and optimism”“this kind of joy is contagious” 等表述相契合 。
21. B 根据前文 “He has skills beyond the reach of ordinary people and creates woodwork with nothing other than a single piece of wood.”
A 项 “compared to” 意为 “把…… 比作”;B 项 “influenced by” 意为 “受…… 影响”;C 项 “taken for” 意为 “被认为是”;D 项 “identified as” 意为 “被识别为”。
