During the last few years of his life, my Dad lived just up the road from me in a tiny home that used to belong to my Nana. He had been a widower for over 20 years by then, losing my Mom when she was only 55 years old. His Mom, my Nana, had recently passed away too. He was disabled and retired so he spent a lot of time alone.
Several times a week, though, I would take a walk up to his house. We would sit in the living room or on the front porch, sip tea and talk. It wasn't anything major. We talked about sports, cars, gardening, weather, and occasionally enjoyed a laugh over old memories. It wasn't anything too deep. It was just a simple sharing, a connection between a father and a son, an hour spent just enjoying each other’s company. Those afternoons remain some of my happiest time spent with my Dad. It allowed us to gently heal any old wounds we had given each other when I was growing up. It allowed us to silently give each other the time and love we hadn’t before. It allowed us to grow closer together before he left this world.
I know too that when my own time in this world is done, when my own mission on Earth is finished, I will get to spend another afternoon with Dad. We will sit, talk, catch up, and quietly enjoy each other’s company. We will share all the love and wisdom we didn't get to share while we were here. And we will make that afternoon last an eternity (永恒).
If there is one thing that I learned from those afternoons I spent with my Dad during the last years of his life, it is this: It is never too late to spent time with those you love. It is never too late to tell them that you love them. It is never too late to heal a relationship and mend a hurting heart. It doesn’t matter if they are here or in the heaven because love conquers even death. Begin today then! Spend an afternoon with those you love and those afternoons will become a gift of lifetime.

Many people enjoy chocolate. However, recent reports have emphasized that chocolate production poses environmental and nutritional concerns. As a result, Swiss experts discovered new methods and recipes to create chocolate that is considered healthier and sustainable.
In a study, researchers raised concerns about chocolates’ impacts on health. Additionally, chocolate production can impact land use and increase global warming. Finding sustainable ways to create chocolates will be significant to the environment and offer potential socio-economic benefits to farmers.
The latest June report revealed that Swiss scientists have discovered new ways to produce healthier and more sustainable chocolate. The traditional sugar in chocolates is replaced by cocoa pod’s waste plant matter. Sustainable chocolate recipe uses mashed pulp (浆状物) and husk (外皮) of the cocoa pod instead of beans. Unlike the usual chocolate, the researchers noted nutritional improvement.
Another aspect of the report is environmental benefits. Conventional methods can damage land and use excessive water. The new method reduces water and land usage by 6%. Additionally, it can potentially reduce emissions by utilizing solar drying methods.
For farmers who have struggled against climate change and dry conditions, the study highlights that it has a local economic impact. This can drive a new revenue stream (收入来源) for local farmers, particularly for areas where cocoa is grown.
While the chocolate uses a new recipe, the result explains that it is identical to other traditional dark chocolate in terms of taste and texture. Additionally, the report emphasized that there is still a need for a pilot study According to a report, people who consume these chocolates can notice slight differences in flavor and sweetness.
The chocolate industry is considered a $100 billion industry. Although chocolates may taste delicious, they contribute more to pollution and waste. Adopting sustainable chocolates can potentially make a significant impact on the environment amidst growing concerns about climate change and habitat warming.
Recent findings showed that 70% of cocoa beans are found in West Africa, and there is an increasing demand for cocoa globally. However, Africa has been at risk of climate effects, causing frequent droughts and high temperatures.
As cocoa demand soars(猛增), deforestation can likely become more widespread, which could exacerbate climate change. As a result, offering environment-friendly and sustainable ways to produce chocolates is crucial.

Mirrors were better in the past. So said my father-in-law, who lived to be 93 years old. In his last years, he grew disenchanted (不再抱幻想的) with the reflection staring back at him each morning. Many people think that the image they see of themselves in the mirror is not accurate; they look too old and ugly. The same goes for photographs.
Thus, there is a conflict between what the mirror or photo shows and our perception of ourselves. We often cherish photographs of ourselves when we were younger to encourage self-deception (自我欺骗) when our current reflection does not match our vain imagination. Or we manipulate a photo we have taken with our phone before publishing it on social media.
So how did people create their self-image before mirrors There are two other ways to gain knowledge about ourselves.
One is through the perceptions that other people have of us. Talking to those close to us allows us to see ourselves from the outside: A friend is a mirror for our inner self. We see ourselves through others’ perceptions of us and through the inner (and outer) qualities that others attribute to us. Another way to gain knowledge about ourselves is to reflect on how we experience our body and our inner world.
It is a common belief that deep inside us is our “true” self. We strive (力争) to be “authentic”, but what we call the self is a combination of at least three perspectives: the appearance as seen in the mirror, how we reflect ourselves through others, and the perceived inner world. These three ways of looking at the self sometimes conflict with each other.
The Oracle of Delphi’s maxim (格言) was “Know thyself”. This may not be possible because there is no hard core that constitutes your true self. As Danish poet Henrik Nordbrandt writes, “Whatever rivers we reflect in, we see ourselves only when we have turned our backs.”
A more appropriate picture is that the self is the result of an ongoing negotiation with ourselves in which we weigh different desires against each other, but the expectations of the people around us and the prevailing culture (主流文化) also contribute. We are constantly constructing ourselves. And we are adept at deceiving ourselves in this kind of negotiation.
12.Why did the author mention his father-in-law’s saying at the beginning of the text
A.To introduce the topic of this text. B.To show us a common feeling.
C.To show his discontent with his life. D.To offer a wrong belief in life.
13.Why do we love photos of ourselves when we were younger
A.To better show them on social media.
B.To satisfy our need of vain imagination.
C.To encourage a good reflection of ourselves.
D.To better deceive other people on social media.
14.Which of the following should be the best title for this text
A.How Can We Have a Better Understanding of Ourselves
B.The Conflict Between Our Photos and Our Perceptions
C.Why Mirrors May Not Show Our “Real” Selves
D.The Three Perspectives In Our Imaginations of Ourselves
15.What is the author’s viewpoint in this text
A.People’s images vary from person to person.
B.Two ways to gain knowledge about ourselves.
C.Mirrors are now out of date in our daily life.
D.It is not easy to get a “true self” image in life.
Learn from Regrets
In daily life, everyone may have regrets, but do you know how to learn from regrets 16 Instead of letting a failed relationship make you miserable, you simply wish it turned out differently. You can be honest with yourself about what went wrong and use that knowledge to enjoy better relationships in the future. Here are some steps you can take.
Overcome the fear. People often say their regrets always trouble them and even cast a shadow over their mind. Bring your mind out of the shadow by making a list of your regrets. 17 Be honest without worrying too much. You will find that the list is a lot less frightening.
18 After you make a mistake, life moves on. But sometimes you just can’t stop kicking yourself. Perhaps you didn’t pay much attention to studies years ago, and now you are constantly imagining how excellent you are if you could have studied hard. Blaming yourself makes no sense. Resolve to commute your emotional sentence with a simple verbal declaration: I apologize to myself and will not waste another minute of my life reliving a decision that cannot be changed.
Treasure regrets. Regrets are essential throughout your life. 19 Instead, the value of the previous regrets is that they will serve as a constant reminder for your future’s opportunities and relationships.
In conclusion, your regrets can teach you to become smarter and more successful—if you let them do. So it’s time to make your list of regrets, outline your resolutions and change your inappropriate behavior. 20 .
A.Forgive yourself.
B.Focus on studies.
C.You can write down why each one still bothers you and its effects.
D.Piling a list of regrets in front of you can make others feel frightened.
E.The trick is not to get rid of the bad feeling but use it for improvement.
F.Also invest your own skills and improvement right now and get started.
G.If you didn’t experience regrets, you would repeat the same wrong behaviors.

Alvin Bamburg, 66, was deep in the woods in Grand Cane, Louisiana, last December when something caught his eye. Among the fallen branches and leaves, it looked like litter. But Bamburg was attracted and picked it up.
“God just told me,” he later recounted.
As he drew closer, he saw that it was a broken balloon. Attached was a piece of paper decorated with sparkly star stickers. It was a child’s Christmas wish list.
“Dear Santa,” the handwritten note read. “My name is Luna. I am four years old. I live in Liberal, Kansas. This year I have been nice. I would like candy, Spider-Man ball, Frozen doll. With love, Luna.”
Bamburg’s heart hammered in his chest. Ever since he was a child, he had dreamed of this very scenario. “Years ago,” he says, “classes at school released balloons with notes. I’ve always wanted to find one.”
He believed this was his childhood wish coming true. And he knew he was going to make Luna’s wish come true too.
However, the task seemed impossible, as Liberal, Kansas, is more than 650 miles from Grand Cane, Louisiana. But Bamburg’s wife, Lee Ann Bamburg, didn’t mind the distance. As an enthusiastic Facebook user, she had seen other people find all sorts of connections through the site and thought it might help her husband find Luna.
The next day Alvin posted a photo of the balloon and the Christmas list on his Facebook page, asking for help locating the sender.
At first, he wasn’t confident the strategy would work. But as he saw the number of shares and comments on his post climbed into the hundreds, his hope grew into expectation. “I knew we were going to find Luna.” Alvin said.
And indeed, they did.

根据第一段中“However, recent reports have emphasized that chocolate production poses environmental and nutritional concerns.( 然而,最近的报告强调,巧克力生产带来了环境和营养问题。)”以及第二段中“In a study, researchers raised concerns about chocolates’ impacts on health. Additionally, chocolate production can impact land use and increase global warming.( 在一项研究中,研究人员提出了巧克力对健康影响的担忧。此外,巧克力生产会影响土地使用,加剧全球变暖。)”可知,巧克力生产对健康和环境都有影响。故选B项。
9.推理判断题。根据第三段中“The latest June report revealed that Swiss scientists have discovered new ways to produce healthier and more sustainable chocolate.( 6月份的最新报告显示,瑞士科学家发现了生产更健康、更可持续的巧克力的新方法。)”以及第六段中“While the chocolate uses a new recipe, the result explains that it is identical to other traditional dark chocolate in terms of taste and texture. Additionally, the report emphasized that there is still a need for a pilot study (试点研究) . According to a report, people who consume these chocolates can notice slight differences in flavor and sweetness.( 虽然巧克力采用了新配方,但结果表明,它在味道和质地上与其他传统黑巧克力完全相同。
根据倒数第三段中“Additionally, the report emphasized that there is still a need for a pilot study (试点研究) . According to a report, people who consume these chocolates can notice slight differences in flavor and sweetness.( 此外,该报告强调,仍有必要进行初步研究。根据一份报告,食用这些巧克力的人可以注意到味道和甜度的细微差异。)”可知,新的巧克力配方还需要进行试点研究,并且人们能注意到味道和甜度的细微差异,说明到目前为止它还不是很完美。故选D项。

【分析】这是一篇议论文。文章讨论了镜子、照片与自我认知的冲突。
【解析】12.推理判断题。根据第一段“Mirrors were better in the past. So said my father-in-law, who lived to be 93 years old. In his last years, he grew disenchanted (不再抱幻想的) with the reflection staring back at him each morning. Many people think that the image they see of themselves in the mirror is not accurate; they look too old and ugly. The same goes for photographs.(镜子在过去要好得多。我的岳父说,他活到了93岁。在他生命的最后几年里,他对每天早晨凝视着他的倒影不再抱有幻想。许多人认为他们在镜子里看到的自己的形象是不准确的;他们看起来又老又丑。照片也是如此。)”可知,作者在开头提到岳父的观点是为了引出文章的核心话题——镜子、照片与自我认知的冲突。故选A。
根据第二段“Thus, there is a conflict between what the mirror or photo shows and our perception of ourselves. We often cherish photographs of ourselves when we were younger to encourage self-deception (自我欺骗) when our current reflection does not match our vain imagination. Or we manipulate a photo we have taken with our phone before publishing it on social media.(因此,镜子或照片所显示的与我们对自己的看法之间存在冲突。当我们现在的形象与我们虚幻的想象不符时,我们常常珍爱自己年轻时的照片,以鼓励自我欺骗。或者我们在发布到社交媒体之前,对用手机拍摄的照片进行了处理。)”当人们当前的外表与“虚荣的想象”不符时,会通过珍藏年轻时的照片进行自我欺骗。故选B。
14.主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其根据第一段“Many people think that the image they see of themselves in the mirror is not accurate; they look too old and ugly.(许多人认为他们在镜子里看到的自己的形象是不准确的;他们看起来又老又丑。) ”可知,全文核心在于探讨镜子无法准确反映“真实自我”,并分析自我认知的多种视角(镜子、他人、内在感知)及其冲突。C项(镜子为何不显示真实自我)最全面概括主题,故选C。
15.推理判断题。根据最后一段“A more appropriate picture is that the self is the result of an ongoing negotiation with ourselves in which we weigh different desires against each other, but the expectations of the people around us and the prevailing culture (主流文化) also contribute. We are constantly constructing ourselves. And we are adept at deceiving ourselves in this kind of negotiation.(一个更合适的说法是,自我是我们与自己不断谈判的结果,我们在谈判中权衡不同的欲望,但我们周围的人的期望和主流文化也有贡献。

故填the。

故填to fight。
“at”是介词,介词后接动词时要用动名词形式,所以“protect”要变为“protecting”,“be targeted at doing sth.”
