College professors these days face an ever-higher bar to grab the attention of their students. Yet, Tatiana Erukhimova, who teaches physics at Texas A&M University in the United States, has managed to get her students excited about science.
Known as “Dr. Tatiana”, the professor performs physics tricks with boundless energy and enthusiasm. Videos of her theatrical demonstrations have racked up(积累) hundreds of millions of views across social media platforms. In the videos, Erukhimova uses a range of everyday objects in her experiments, from ping pong balls and toilet paper to bicycle wheels and hair dryers.
It’s clear she knows what it takes to get young people excited about a hard science. But it isn't always that way. When she first started teaching college freshman classes almost two decades ago, she struggled to grab the attention of her younger students. She was used to teaching juniors and found it easier to teach them. “By junior year, students enrolled in physics are determined to learn,” she says. “But when it comes to teaching a large lecture hall of 100-plus first-year students, first impressions are important. Unfortunately, I did not grab their attention on the first day—that was my mistake.”
By the second semester, she found her footing, adjusting her approach to making her lecture halls feel smaller and get her students engaged. “Talk to your students before and after class. Walk up and down the stairs when you teach your class rather than stay on the stage, ”she says. “And add showy demonstrations, which help students connect the abstract concepts with real life.”
Erukhimova has earned more than just recognition on social media. In October 2023, she was honored with a national award for science outreach for leadership in bringing the excitement of physics through innovative education programs.
24.What can we infer about Erukhimova from the first two paragraphs
A.She likes to play a trick on her students.
B.She wants to be popular on social media.
C.She excites widespread interest in science.
D.She is passionate about making online videos.
25.Why did Erukhimova find it easier to teach juniors
A.Juniors showed a higher level of commitment to learning.
B.She didn’t have to worry about first impressions.
C.She used simpler teaching methods for juniors.
D.Juniors could study entirely on their own.
26.How did Erukhimova find her footing in the second semester
A.By improving her communication skills.
B.By following a traditional teaching method.
C.By reducing the number of students in the class.
D.By making herself approachable and her teaching engaging.
27.Which of the following best describes Erukhimova
A.Ambitious. B.Enthusiastic.
C.Demanding. D.Hardworking.
Research has found that loneliness and social isolation are associated with an increased risk of conditions like anxiety, depression, heart disease, and stroke. In fact, a 2010 analysis found that loneliness is as harmful to physical health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day — meaning using friendship to reduce loneliness is good for you. But how many friends should you have
According to Jeffrey Hall, a professor of communication studies at the University of Kansas, if you want to ease the health impacts of loneliness, the most important thing you can do is to have at least one important person in your life. But if you want to have the most meaningful life, one where you feel very bonded and connected to others, more friends are better.
Some research endorses his remarks. One study from 2016 found that those with at least six friends have better health throughout their lives, and a study from 2020 found that middle-aged women who have at least three friends typically have higher levels of overall satisfaction with their lives.
To figure out whether you need more friends in your life, psychologist Marisa Franco recommends asking yourself, “Do I feel lonely ” Loneliness is sort of an alarm system. While everyone feels lonely sometimes, you should determine whether you feel left out or isolated regularly.
Franco also recommends asking yourself if there are parts of your identity that you feel are restricted. “Different people bring out different parts of us. So when you have a large friend group, you’re able to experience this side of yourself that loves basketball, and that side of yourself that loves flowers,” Franco said. “If you’re not feeling quite like yourself, that might indicate you need different types of friends.”
Since making new friends can be difficult, Franco said it’s often easier to rekindle old relationships. She added that you should take the initiative and not assume that friendships will naturally happen.
“Ultimately, there ‘isn’t a magic number’ of friends for everyone,” Hall said. “Your personality and the characteristics of your life are going to make a difference.”
28.What might Jeffrey Hall agree with
A.Having just one friend leads to more happiness.
B.Everyone’s ideal number of friends doesn’t vary.
C.A broad friend network enables strong connections.
D.Friendship should be prioritized in social relations.
29.What does the underlined word “endorses” in paragraph 3 mean
A.Creates. B.Supports. C.Satisfies. D.Introduces.
30.Which one suggests a person needs more friends according to Franco
A.Continuous self-doubt. B.Few exciting experiences.
C.Ineffective social activities. D.Constant feelings of isolation.
31.What does Franco say about having a large friend group
A.It requires befriending those with shared values.
B.It ensures personal growth by wide social circles.
C.It means a person won’t feel restricted any longer.
D.It helps explore different aspects of one’s personality.
In the Red Sea sandwiched between northeast Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, octopuses and different species of fish hunt together among the coral reefs.
“It’s not just one octopus and one fish,” says Eduardo Sampaio, a behavioral biologist at the Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior in Konstanz, Germany. “We’re talking about one octopus and five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten very different fish.” In a recently-published study, he and his colleagues argue the creatures are sharing the leadership as they make hunting decisions.
Before this study, researchers had universally thought that the octopus was hunting by itself, and that the fish were freeloading (吃白食). But for Sampaio, these conclusions were largely drawn from looking at the situation from the surface. He wondered whether something more complex might be going on. So he decided to find out.
“We can actually go with cameras, reconstruct everything in 3D, and try to see who’s following who,” Sampaio says. “But you have to find the octopus, an animal that has evolved not to be found,” he adds. “When you find it hunting, you should make sure that it continues hunting like you aren’t there and doesn’t escape.”
After a month of diving, Sampaio managed to record hours of hunting of these unusual groups. “I instantly understood the fish weren’t just following the octopus around because you could see they moved in a stop-and-go pattern,” he says. “Once this stopping occurred, there were always fish that started to go around looking for prey (猎物). When the fish presented possible targets to the octopus, the octopus moved and selected the one it wanted.”
Feeding is “first come, first serve”. But with the hunting happening over and over again, all the group members get to eat. And Sampaio says that the octopus punches (击打) the fish if the group is at a standstill for too long.
32.What might be a driving force for Sampaio’s study
A.Desire to challenge himself. B.Curiosity about the Red Sea.
C.Interest in an unsolved problem. D.Doubt about some common beliefs.
33.What was challenging for Sampaio’s team
A.Reconstructing the hunting in 3D.
B.Staying underwater for a long time.
C.Finding and observing the group hunting.
D.Identifying and sorting fish species in the sea.
34.How do the fish contribute to the group hunting
A.They explore the environment.
B.They distract the possible prey.
C.They protect the octopus from dangers.
D.They make choices about possible targets.
35.Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text
A.Mystery under the Red Sea B.Rare mixed-species cooperation
C.New survival strategy of octopuses D.Harmony between prey and hunters
After a night spent tossing and turning, you wake up feeling like two of the Seven Dwarfs: Sleepy and Grumpy. Restless nights lead to weary mornings and low performance. 36 If you are having trouble falling or staying asleep, try these tips for a better night’s sleep.
Exercise. Going for a daily walk will not only burn calories, but it will also help you sleep better at night. 37 Exercising too close to bedtime can keep you awake. Morning workouts, on the other hand, expose you to bright daylight and support your natural circadian rhythm (昼夜节律).
38 Don’t use your bed as a space for doing homework or reading. Instead, do these things in your study space. Also avoid watching late-night TV or using your phone in bed. The bed needs to be a stimulus (刺激因素) for sleeping, not for wakefulness.
Eat — but not too much. An empty stomach can keep you awake, but so can an overly full belly. Avoid eating a big meal before bedtime. 39 For example, have an apple or a few whole-wheat crackers (饼干) to satisfy you until breakfast.
De-stress. When your to-do list is a mile long, daytime worries can bubble to the surface at night. Stress is a stimulus. It activates the fight-or-flight hormones that work against sleep. Some relaxation exercises can help with this. 40
A.Reserve your bed for sleep.
B.Make your bed comfortable and quiet.
C.Just watch the timing of your workouts.
D.If you’re hungry, eat a small healthy snack.
E.It gets worse if you are under too much stress.
F.Also, give yourself time to wind down before bed.
G.Don’t have tea or coffee because caffeine disrupts sleep.

六、书面表达(本大题共1小题)
67.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Tyler Morgan is vice president of engineering for a company named Trivie. For the last few years, Trivie has worked with the American Heart Association to develop an app that offers training reinforcement (强化) for CPR and other lifesaving skills.
Before the launch of the app, Tyler had to review the app to ensure that everything looked good and was performing well. As part of his evaluation, Tyler went through every screen many times. This included reviewing many questions about first aid, such as the correct positions for giving chest compressions (按压) and rescue breaths. At the time, his only focus was making the app work perfectly. At least, he thought that was his only focus.
From testing and using the app, Tyler gained a great deal of first-aid knowledge, which is crucial information for saving people's lives in emergencies. Little did he know that these skills he had picked up by chance would soon become crucial in an unexpected moment of crisis.
The Morgan family were at a social gathering one day when little Beckham, Tyler’s son, saw a foam noodle (泡沫条) floating in an Olympic-sized pool. Because of lightning, the pool was off-limits, and saw little foot traffic. With no one looking, the boy went in after that foam noodle. He walked down a couple of steps and reached out for it. Instead, his little hand pushed it away. Beckham chased after the foam noodle again, only this time in water deeper than he could handle.
A teenager was the first to notice Beckham floating face down. She jumped in, pulled him out and placed him on his back alongside the edge of the pool. His body was lifeless, his face purple. She started screaming.
From about 30 feet away, Tyler heard a chilling scream off to his right. He turned towards it. Because of people in the way, all he could see was a pair of tiny legs wearing black swimming shorts and black shoes. Recognizing those shorts and shoes all too well, Tyler raced over.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Nobody knew what to do, except Tyler.

W: That sounds good. We plan to take two classes: one with 28 pupils and the other with 32. We currently have three adults accompanying them. Is that enough
M: For every six children, you need one adult to care for them. Let me count how many adults you need...Okay, so you need 10 adults in total.
W: Well, we’re seven adults short. I might send an e-mail to parents asking for additional volunteers. Can you tell me about the educational programs you provide for students
M: We have interactive lectures and guided tours for different age groups on topics including dinosaurs. You can book these programs and schedule tours through our website.
W: Great! I’ll check out the website. Thank you.
M: You’re welcome, June. We look forward to your visit. Have a nice day!

Hello, everyone, today we’re going to explore an economic concept. In New York City, people can go to the New York Public Library and get some ties for their job interviews. In other cities, like Toronto, people can pay a small fee at Fashion Libraries to rent clothes for any occasion. Library of Things, a London-based company, lends non-traditional items like drills or music equipment to customers for short periods of time. All of these examples are part of the new sharing economy, a business model based on sharing or renting goods instead of owning them completely. The sharing economy brings many benefits, such as cost savings and increased access to goods. However, it also brings challenges. There are concerns about the security of direct people-to-people trades. Some companies have been accused of overlooking their responsibility to ensure the safety of their users. In brief, the sharing economy is a rapidly-developing and complex phenomenon that is having a significant influence on society.
