Freshman Matthew Martin has enjoyed playing sports, and forming friendships throughout his first year in high school. As he finished Grade 8, Martin started the search for his high school and after applying to Jesuit High School, Martin’s father brought up the idea of Le Valle and thought it would be a good fit to go there. After spending time with Le Valle schoolmate Will Koch, Martin fell in love with the community.
This year, Martin played on Le Valle’s golf team and soccer team. While the sports themselves were nothing new, he made the leap from recreational soccer to playing competitively and was on a golf team for the first time rather than competing individually. Competing on these two teams taught Martin the value of hard work and the importance of not cutting corners, both in athletics and life. “Always make sure everything gets done and make sure it gets done right, 100% complete,” Martin said, “quality over quantity.”
In previous years, Martin noted that he wouldn’t ask as many questions and would be on the quiet side in class, but thanks to all his teachers this year, he asked more questions and felt more comfortable engaging in discussion. During and after class, Martin could be found as one of two freshmen in math teacher Mr. Linus Oey’s Honors Algebra (代数) class. Martin said that although it was his hardest class, once he started asking questions and started to really engage and try his hardest, he felt much more comfortable and confident with the class.
Martin has many pieces of advice he wishes he could tell himself on the first day of school this year and to the incoming freshmen. “Just relax, have fun. Just make sure you try your hardest no matter what,” Martin said. “Be sure to join clubs or sports. That’s seriously how you can meet somebody, like I’ve met so many best friends through soccer and through the soccer camp.”

South Dakota University (DSU) made a bold decision 40 years ago that transformed a small normal college into a top high-tech university. This change started when DSU faced an uncertain future due to budget cuts. In 1984, DSU closed its Springfield campus and the state turned it into a prison. Then a new law was signed to change DSU’s mission to focus on technology in all academic programs.
The decision to turn a teacher’s college into a technology-focused university seemed risky. But around that time, the financial giant Citibank that was in need of computer programmers decided to move its credit card operation to Sioux Falls, a city near the university. José-Marie Griffiths, the current president of DSU, explains how the university could shift the focus of talent training to meet this demand.
To jump into technology, DSU began with a bachelor’s degree in computer science, using teaching materials from IBM, and built industry partnerships. In the early 2000s, a further step forward came when DSU began to focus on cyber security. In 2004, the National Security Agency named DSU a Center of Academic Excellence in computer security. Enrollment has risen steadily from 867 in 1985 to 3,509 in 2023, with the university now offering 44 degrees, including advanced programs.
When Griffiths arrived on campus, DSU had a strong academic reputation but was not known for its research. In 2017, the research and development efforts took a major step forward with the launch of the Madison Cyber Labs, expanding research into significant fields of cyber security, machine learning and AI, among others. DSU is now planning to expand into Sioux Falls, partnering with research centers and launching a cyber academy for high school students. Meanwhile, it is seeking funds to start a new research center for quantum (量子) computing.
The advanced academic programs and researches at DSU have created numerous new, well-trained employees for a wide range of companies across the country. Jon Waldman, graduating from DSU with a master’s degree in 2006, started an information security company that has become a massive industry in the US. He credited DSU’s commitment to innovation for keeping its graduates at the forefront of the rapidly evolving cyber technology and security industry.
8.Why did DSU start to make a change
A.The enrollment number decreased. B.The campus facilities were out-dated.
C.It was under great financial strain. D.It was short of resources of human talents.

Imagine you are camping at night, and you are sitting inside a tent. You want to read a book, but it is too dark. If you have a flashlight with you inside the tent and you hold your flashlight right up next to the pages of the book, then you are really in business! Brachytherapy (近距离放射疗法), as internal radiation therapy to treat cancer, is a little like this flashlight, because doctors deliver radiation right up close to tumor (肿瘤) cells instead of treating them from farther away.
There are several ways healthcare providers can deliver brachytherapy treatments. In one type of brachytherapy, healthcare providers can use a robot called an afterloader that controls where the radioactive source is placed in the patient.
This robot can move the source through special tubes into the inside of a patient. When the treatment is over, the robot removes the source from the patient. When the radiation source is not being used for treatment, it sits inside a container inside the robot. That container is made of a special kind of heavy metal so that it blocks radiation. The afterloader can be controlled from outside the treatment room, so the doctor and other members of the healthcare team can be outside of the room while the source is outside of its special container and is being used to treat the patient. This makes delivering radiation safer for the medical team, because they are not exposed to radiation each time they treat a patient.
Brachytherapy can be used to treat lots of kinds of cancer. Sometimes patients even get more than one kind of radiation treatment, like when they get treated from the outside-in and then from the inside-out. When a person is going to be treated with brachytherapy, the patient’s doctor will work with a radiation oncologist (肿瘤专家) to make sure the patient is treated safely. By tailoring brachytherapy treatments to individual patients, it can enable doctors to significantly increase the curative effect while reducing side effects to the minimum, enhancing both treatment effectiveness and the quality of life for patients.
12.Why does the author mention the flashlight in paragraph 1
A.To introduce a solution to reading at night.
B.To bring up the topic of brachytherapy.
C.To show its importance when camping at night.
D.To arouse readers’ attention to its use in medical field.
13.What can we know about the afterloader from paragraph 3
A.It can serve as a radioactive source.
B.It can block radiation when functioning.
C.It must be operated inside the treatment room.
D.Doctors can avoid being exposed to radiation by using it.
14.What can be inferred from the text
A.Personalized brachytherapy treatment will have better outcome.
B.Brachytherapy is the most effective method to treat cancer.
C.Patients will suffer less when being treated with oncologists.
D.Patients can only be treated with one kind of radiation for the sake of health.
15.Which can be the most suitable title for the text
A.Finding the Benefits of Radiation Therapy
B.Focusing on What Types of Cancers to Treat
C.Exploring the Possibility of Brachytherapy
D.Treating Cancer From the Inside Out

It was a sunny Saturday morning. Tom, a passionate hiker, set out on a trail in the mountains. The path was narrow but well-marked, winding through thick forests and across bubbling brooks (小溪). As he walked deeper into the mountains, he noticed the sky gradually becoming cloudy.
Suddenly, a strong gust of wind blew through the trees, making them sway violently. Tom realized a storm was approaching. He quickened his pace, looking for shelter. Just then, he saw a small, abandoned cabin (小木屋) by the side of the trail. Its roof was partially damaged, but it was better than nothing. Tom rushed inside and started to look around. It was dirty and filled with spider webs, but in a corner, he found an old flashlight. He hoped it still worked.
As the storm hit, the rain poured down in sheets and thunder roared. Lightning flashed, lighting up the dark interior of the cabin. Tom sat on the floor, waiting for the storm to pass. After what seemed like hours, the rain finally began to ease. Tom decided to head back home before it got dark.
He stepped out of the cabin and started walking back along the trail. But the storm had caused several landslides, blocking parts of the path. Tom had to carefully climb over rocks and fallen trees. As he was making his way, he heard a faint cry for help. It seemed to be coming from a nearby ravine (沟壑).
Tom stopped and listened carefully. The cry came again, more desperate this time. He knew he had to find out where it was coming from. He tied a rope he had brought to a solid tree near the edge of the ravine and slowly started to go down to a lower level, using the flashlight to guide his way.

be appreciated as“被视为……” 故填as。

故填becomes/has become。
故填to preserve。
documenting traditional skills和encouraging sustainable practices in sourcing raw materials是并列关系,用并列连词and连接。故填and。

As he reached the bottom of the ravine, he saw a young girl hide under a rock. She was wet and shivering, her clothes torn. Tom quickly approached her and asked if she was okay. The girl looked up at him with frightened eyes and said that she had slipped and fallen while trying to find shelter during the storm. She had twisted her ankle and couldn’t walk. Tom comforted her, telling her not to worry. He examined her ankle and found that it was swollen but not broken. He took off his jacket and wrapped it around the girl to keep her warm.
Then, Tom picked up the girl and started to climb back up the ravine. The rope helped them, but it was still a tough task. The wet and slippery rocks made it a challenge. But he kept going. Finally, they reached the top of the ravine and got to the entrance of the mountain. Tom saw a car there and waved for help. The driver rushed over and took the girl to get medical attention. The girl thanked Tom before she left, and Tom felt a sense of relief and accomplishment. He knew this was an adventure he would never forget.
