In our newest exhibit, Science for Everyone, we’re thrilled to offer interactive experiences that are as engaging as enlightening. Let’s take a closer look and discover how they rethink their perceptions of STEM.
BECCA PEIXOTTO archaeologist I loved visiting my grandparents’ old farmhouse in Vermont and finding things the previous owners had left behind in the early 1800s. I came to archaeology in a pretty roundabout way. I started college studying engineering. When I took my first archaeology course, it was like alight bulb turned on! It’s exciting to find an artifact buried for hundreds of years and think about the life of the person who held it last.
JESSICA FAGERSTROM medical physicist I work in a field that applies concepts in physics and engineering to questions in medicine. I help treat patients who have cancer, using radiation. My job is to make sure that the radiation is delivered safely and effectively. I love my job because I get to use fascinating science and cutting-edge technology, to help sick people feel better.
GRACIE ERMI computer scientist I write code to aid wildlife conservation. When I first graduated, I wanted to find a job that would make a difference! At the time, I wouldn’t have called myself as a conservationist, but I definitely would now. I work on technology that can look at a picture of a whale and automatically perform a health checkup without disturbing the animal at all.

Long Haifen, from a mountainous village in Guizhou province, is now a freshman at Huazhong Agricultural University (HZAU). Ordinary as she may seem, she represents the strong bond between her hometown and the university, as well as the transformative power of education and sympathy.
In July 2002, Xu Benyu, then a junior student at HZAU, volunteered to teach in the rural areas of Guizhou. The following year, he gave up postgraduate studies and returned there, teaching at two schools for two years, including Long’s elementary school. In 2005, HZAU established the “Benyu Volunteer Service Team”, engaging students annually to continue providing educational support.
In 2017, the 19th volunteer group, including Cao Yuanyuan and Li Zongqing, arrived at Long’s school, Weimin Elementary School, which had 174 students from kindergarten to sixth grade but only six classrooms. The school was severely understaffed. Cao had to teach four subjects while Li managed 23 classes per week. Long and her classmates cherished the opportunity to learn and worked diligently.
The volunteers not only taught knowledge to Long but also developed her personal growth. They encouraged her to deliver speeches at the school’s flag-raising ceremonies, helping to build her confidence. They also broadened her views beyond the mountains. In August 2017, Long participated in an educational trip to Beijing organized by the volunteers, which strengthened her courage to study outside the mountains and have access to better educational resources and a wider world.
Unfortunately, in 2020, her father was involved in a car accident, placing the family in financial difficulty. Hearing this, the volunteers quickly raised enough money, ensuring Long’s following education. All these efforts paid off. Long was admitted to HZAU.
Looking ahead, Long is excited to welcome college life. She hopes to give back to society and become a volunteer like her teachers and help more children plant the seeds to grow and thrive.

Artificial food dye is an additive used to color a product. “The dye is artificial if it originates from a nonfood source,” explains Jamie Alan, PhD, an associate professor of pharmacology and toxicology at Michigan State University. “For example, red dye No.40 is made from petroleum products.” By comparison, natural food dyes “are those that are extracted from plants or animal tissues,” says Francisco Diez-Gonzalez, PhD, professor and director of the Center for Food Safety at the University of Georgia.
A growing body of research has linked artificial food dyes, especially Red No.40, to many health issues. “There is data in animals that some of these dyes may cause cancer,” Alan says. “While there is certainly the potential to cause cancer, there haven’t been any human studies with definitive data to support this.” But studies on humans do show that some dyes can increase certain behaviors—especially in kids—like hyperactivity. “Some children are more sensitive than other children, and sometimes even a small dose can cause these effects,” Alan says.
A 2021 report analyzed data from studies on both animals and humans who were exposed to food dyes. The report included “challenge studies” for which children were given dyes and observed to see how they reacted afterward. In 16 of the 25 studies of the report, there was a link between children taking the dyes and having hyperactivity and other neurobehavioral (神经行为学的) problems afterward.
A 2022 mouse study found that Red No.40 and Red No.17 could cause inflammatory bowel diseases while a 2023 study on mice linked Red No.40 to DNA damage and colonic inflammation. Some people may also experience “allergy-like (像过敏一样) signs” from having these dyes, Die-Gonzalez says.
But Diez-Gonzalez notes that it’s important for people to be aware that more research is needed. “The cancer concerns mostly originate from animal studies that often use very large experimental doses,” he says. “For several of those dyes, the evidence of a harmful effect has not been conclusive.”
8.What can be inferred from the first three paragraphs
A.Some artificial food dyes cause humans cancer.
B.Dyes from plants and animals are more popular.
C.Artificial food dyes can be obtained more easily.
D.Possibly Red No.40 can result in health problems.
9.Why is “challenge” used in paragraph 3
A.Scientists couldn’t find enough evidence.
B.Carrying out experiments took too much time and money.
C.Experiments on humans were more complex than on animals.
D.Scientists were not willing to do such experiments on children.
10.What do Die-Gonzalez’s words in the last paragraph suggest
A.Mice are allergic to artificial food dyes.
B.Studies about artificial food dyes on humans are not adequate.
C.Red artificial food dyes are the key factor leading to mouse cancer.
D.Only by being taken large doses can artificial food dye s do harm to humans.
11.What does the text mainly talk about
A.Various opinions about artificial food dyes.
B.Experiments on mice about artificial food dyes.
C.The research about safety of artificial food dyes.
D.The connection between cancer and Red No.40.
A rare lunar crystal found on the near side of the moon is giving scientists hope of providing limitless power for the world forever. The lunar crystal is made of material previously unknown to the scientific community and contains a key element for the nuclear combination process, a form of power generation that uses the same forces that fuel the Sun and other stars in the universe.
The crystal was found in lunar basalt (玄武岩) small pieces collected from the moon in 2020 and makes China the third country to discover a new lunar mineral, behind the US and the former Soviet Union. The Chinese moon mission landed in Oceanus Procellarum in December 2020 and has been the first lunar sample return mission since the 1970s.
More than 1.7kg of lunar samples were collected and delivered safely to Earth. The crystal is clear and roughly the width of a single human hair. It formed in a region of the-moon that was volcanically active around 1.2 billion years ago.
One of the primary ingredients found in this crystal is helium-3, which scientists believe may provide a stable fuel source for nuclear fusion reactors. The element is incredibly rare on Earth, but it seems to be fairly prevalent on the moon.
Although it is too early for scientists to have made any financial estimates on such a fuel source, it will undoubtedly be extremely costly: There is, of course, the matter of bringing the crystals back from the moon, especially in the large amounts that are needed to fuel fusion reactors.
12.Why is discovering helium-3 significant
A.It provides a potential stable fuel source for nuclear fusion reactors.
B.It indicates the possibility of utilizing solar energy directly from the sun.
C.It offers a method for converting lunar basalt directly into electrical energy.
D.It suggests that coal reserves could be refilled through lunar resources.
13.What do we learn about the lunar crystal
A.It provides fuel to the sun and other stars.
B.It was found from the far side of the moon.
C.It was taken to the earth by three countries.
D.It was the first sample taken from the moon.
14.What does the underlined word probably mean in paragraph 4
A.Transparent. B.Valuable.
C.Common. D.Powerful.
15.Why is it extremely costly to utilize helium-3 as a fuel source
A.Because it is prohibited by the international laws.
B.Because it demands large amounts of crystals from the moon.
C.Because it requires the development of entirely new types of fusion reactors.
D.Because it involves complex and expensive processes to extract helium-3 from the crystal.
Life is filled with numerous victories and downfalls. 16 May it be your love life or a serious life struggle, we must learn to move on. Here’s how you can create a new chapter in your life.
Draw a line mentally. Life is going to throw a lot of problems your way. You need to be mentally prepared for each and every situation. You might find yourself in the same knots, in the same rotting company, and in the same dead ends. What you can do in this kind of situation is draw a mental line. 17
Learn from others. There is one common mistake that many of us make when dealing with a problem or situation. We needn’t try to go through all of it on our own but learn from others. When we talk about others, I refer to the people that you are close with. 18 Humans are social beings and we have to interact with each other to uplift our spirit.
Try everything in your hands. How can you move on from a struggle until and unless you have tried everything in your hands Sometimes we might feel that we have tried out so much and still nothing is working out for us. 19 I would say this one thing to you. Giving up is easy, but continuing with the pain is hard but worth it.
20 In order to get out of a struggle or sticky situation, you have to do something reasonable. Well, most people get busy doing the things that don’t get them anywhere. In stressful situations, people self-inflict pain onto themselves. For example, many people resort to alcohol or smoking to relieve the stress, which just kills them slowly.
A.Do what actually works.
B.Leave the tough situation behind.
C.I know that situation as I have been there.
D.These could be your family and close friends.
E.What matters is how you tackle each situation.
F.This line will help you mark your future decisions.
G.A warm and encouraging tone will help you out very much.

He was there every morning, sitting motionless on the front steps of his house. His bright blue eyes seemed so far away and sad. In the morning light I could see the shadows that were carved deep within the lines surrounding his eyes.
Each morning I walked this route with my daughter to her kindergarten class. As newcomers, we didn’t know many neighbors. On one beautiful autumn morning, as we passed his house, my daughter burst out and greeted him with a cheerful: “Hi, Mr. Man!” Always the outgoing child! I wasn’t surprised at her enthusiasm. However, her cheerfulness dimmed when he didn’t respond. My daughter asked why the man didn’t want to say hi to her. Hesitating for words, because I didn’t have an answer, I said simply, “Maybe he’s having a tough day.”
Back home, I did the breakfast dishes and thought about “Mr. Man.” Why was he sad I wanted to do something to cheer him up. I thought of a few ways to make his day a bit brighter, but nothing seemed special enough.
The next morning, after dropping my daughter off at school, I saw one of my other neighbors raking her front lawn. After I introduced myself, she invited me to sit and chat on her front porch for a while. I learned Theresa was a long time resident of the neighborhood. She knew everybody and everything. As we sipped our steaming cups of coffee, she filled me in on almost every neighbor in the community. Theresa had such a bubbly personality, but when I asked her about the man up the block, she got really serious. “Bob recently lost his wife in a car accident. He hasn’t been the same since.” She went on to tell me that Bob and his wife never had children, and she wasn’t sure if he had any relatives.
The following week seemed to whiz by. I had talked to my daughter about what we could do to make Mr. Man smile. Should we bring him cookies or make him a card

故填which或that。
故填is。
分析句式结构可知,此处是it is + adj + for sb + to do sth结构,表示“对某人来说做某事是……的”。故填to learn。
故填was performed。
根据下文“the blending of Malaysia’s ethnicities (种族) and cultures(马来西亚民族和文化的融合)”可知,此处用介词with表示“伴随着”这种融合。故填with。
故填a。

With every suggestion I made, she simply said “No, not that. “I asked her if she had any ideas of her own.” I will when it pop into my head! “she said confidently. A few days later, as we approached Bob, my daughter greeted him but he didn’t respond as usual. Then she picked a beautiful red autumn leaf and handed it to him. Surprisingly, he accepted the leaf with a smile. As she skipped back to me, she glanced at Bob and cheerfully said, “See you tomorrow, Mr. Man!” This time, he replied softly, “See you tomorrow.”
Para 2
From then on, Bob and my daughter exchanged greetings each morning. His eyes, once clouded with sorrow, now sparkled with warmth whenever he saw us. One afternoon, we found a simple card with the heartfelt message: “Thank you, from Mr. Man.” My daughter’s face lit up with joy as she read the note, “He must really appreciate the time we’ve spent with him.” she said. In offering just a little of our time each day, we received something far more precious - a reminder that in the tapestry of life, threads of mutual care and concern weave together to create a warm and vibrant community.
