In her tiny but cozy Athens apartment, a 93-year-old Greek woman whose name is Ioanna Matsouka has knit thousands of brightly coloured scarves for children in shelters from Greece to Ukraine — and she has no plans to quit just yet. “I will continue knitting until I die, and it brings me joy to share my creations,” Matsouka declared, her knitting needles clicking rhythmically through her skilled fingers. Since she accidentally took up knitting in the early 1990s, Matsouka has crafted over 3,000 scarves.
In the hallway by the door, shopping bags filled with her latest creations await their new home. An old, self-knitted patchwork (拼布) blanket is thrown casually over the sofa where she spends her days. Initially, the scarves were gifts for friends. As the stock grew, they were donated to children’s shelters across Greece. Then they reached children in Bosnia and Ukraine. The latest batch of 70 scarves went to a refugee camp near Athens this winter, via the U. N. refugee agency, UNHCR.
“The fact that we give scarves away gives her strength,” said her daughter Angeliki. She recounted drawings and mails her mother has received over the years: “Thank you… Be well… Keep going… You gave joy to children… You gave joy to people… That’s her only reward — a letter, a few words.”
Sadly, Matsouka’s vision is impaired and she suffers from bouts of severe facial pain, a condition known as trigeminal neuralgia Despite this, Matsouka still keeps knitting one scarf a day, with small imperfections. Every morning, she wakes up, drinks a glass of warm milk, puts on her pearl earrings and quietly gets to work till a break for lunch and a nap.
Angeliki describes her mother, who painstakingly knits into the night, as a living example of resilience and optimism. “She once mentioned that she has even found the secret to a long life in it,” Angeliki says. “It’s the happiness I get from giving.” Matsouka says, sitting beside a big blue bag brimming with yarn.
4.What can we learn about Ioanna Matsouka from the passage
A.She sells scarves for profit. B.She learned knitting in her youth.

7.Which of the following best describes Matsouka
A.Open-minded and energetic. B.Self-educated and stubborn.
C.Well-informed and ambitious. D.Kind-hearted and persistent.
Every morning I’m almost guaranteed to wake up and read some climate news that screams disaster — a terrifying wildfire, a devastating flood or yet another report that says we’re past a tipping point. The round-the-clock disastrous environmental news weighs me down constantly.
If you’ve noticed the same, you are not alone. But all that constant stream of depressing news about the environment can get in the way of taking action. That’s because those headlines can lead us to believe that there is little an individual can do about climate change, when in fact that’s not the case. But staying motivated to make individual changes is hard when you’re feeling low.
That’s why one of my colleagues and I have come up with what we call a “happy climate approach”. It’s our way of talking about the behavioral changes we have identified that not only reduce greenhouse gas emissions but also provide a greater sense of hope, appreciation, gratitude or fulfillment in our daily lives.
Now I’ve cut my driving from 8,000 kilometers a year down to 2,700 kilometers by working from home most of the time. Not only does this save emissions, but it also gives me more free time, which has been shown to promote happiness. I also choose to walk or bike everywhere I can. While it’s true that walking or biking can take more time than driving, these more active forms of transportation provide moderate physical exercise, which can also elevate mood.
And there’s a simple rule that I use to stay in a good mental state. For every piece of bad climate news I encounter, I make sure to read at least one positive article on the climate. To prevent myself from constantly scrolling through disheartening news, I’ve adjusted my newsfeed (新闻推送) so that I can see positive climate news on a regular basis, which brings me joy and hope.
I know we’re a long way from reversing the impacts of climate change. But at least with this approach, I don’t dread getting out of bed, reaching for my phone and reading the news.
8.What effect does the nonstop disastrous environmental news have
A.It motivates people to act. B.It blocks people’s action.
C.It changes people’s behavior. D.It provides useful information.
9.What is the “happy climate approach” according to the text
A.Making big changes in daily life. B.Reducing greenhouse gases greatly.
C.Ignoring negative climate news. D.Finding positive climate actions.
10.Why does the author read positive climate news regularly
A.To avoid negative emotions. B.To collect news materials.
C.To gain climate knowledge. D.To change news-reading habits.
11.What is the author’s purpose in writing the text
A.To analyze the impacts of climate news.
B.To stress the urgency of climate action.
C.To explain the causes of climate change.
D.To advocate a positive way to fight climate change.
When you listen to music, it’s not just your ears that are engaged. The areas of your brain responsible for emotion and memory also become active. The hippocampus (海马体), essential for memories, works closely with the amygdala (杏仁体), the brain’s emotional center. This explains why some songs are both memorable and emotional. Given music’s ability to evoke emotions and trigger memories, we supposed it could alter the emotional content of existing memories, through the process of memory reactivation.
To test this, we conducted a three-day experiment. On the first day, participants memorized neutral stories. The next day, they recalled the stories while listening to positive, negative music, or in silence, with fMRI (功能性磁共振成像) scans recording their brain activity. On the final day, they recalled the stories without music. The results were remarkable. When recalling neutral stories, participants listening to emotionally charged music were more likely to add new emotional elements into the story that matched the mood of the music.
The brain scans from the experiment were even more interesting. When participants recalled stories with music, there was increased activity in the hippocampus and amygdala. This is why a song associated with a significant life event can feel so powerful — it activates both emotion-and memory-processing regions at the same time. We also observed strong communication between these emotional memory processing areas of the brain and the areas involved in visual sensory processing. This suggests that music might add emotional details into memories while participants are visually imagining the stories.
Our findings indicate that music serves as an emotional lure (诱饵), becoming intertwined with memories and subtly altering their emotional tone. For people dealing with conditions such as depression or PTSD (创伤后应激障碍), where negative memories can be overwhelming, carefully chosen music might help reconstruct those memories in a more positive light and potentially reduce their negative emotional impact over time. It also paves new paths for exploring music-based interventions in the treatment of depression and other mental health conditions.
12.What is the purpose of the experiment
A.To illustrate an argument. B.To draw a comparison.
C.To clarify a misconception. D.To confirm an assumption.
13.What can be inferred from paragraph 3
A.Music-aided memories are richer. B.Music makes life more powerful.
C.Brain areas work independently. D.Music has little impact on brain.
14.What’s the author’s attitude toward the potential of music in mental health treatment
A.Skeptical. B.Positive. C.Indifferent. D.Negative.
15.Which would be the best title for the passage
A.Music Can Alter the Emotional Tone of Memory B.Music Can Separate Emotions from Memory
C.Music Can Promote Brain Activity D.Music Can Help Improve Memory
Feeling sad and empty now that a special event has past Try the following four tips to move forward.
Embrace Your Emotions
Find a private space and allow emotions to surface. If tears of joy, sadness or frustration arise, express them. 16 It may sound dramatic, but it’s a valid feeling and it’s perfectly fine to experience sorrow when something important has ended. Remember that the intensity will pass and will do so more smoothly when the built-up emotions have been released.
17 Whether pushing yourself to the limits in a physical challenge or spending months ensuring an event’s success, it’s important to take time afterwards to rest your mind and body. Relax, eat nutritiously, enjoy some gentle exercise, and go to bed early for revitalizing sleep. 18
Make Time for Reflection
19 How did it go What did you learn Would you do something differently next time This period of reflection, without dwelling too long on the matter of being self-critical, can provide valuable insights. Appreciate what you did and recognize all the good that came from the experience. View the event as simply the end of one chapter and the beginning of the next.
Acknowledge the Negative
If aspects of the event didn’t go as well as planned, put it down to experience. Consider if there’s anything to be learned from it, but don’t keep going over what happened. Surrender to the thoughts and then let them go. 20
A.Rest and Revitalize
B.Address the Challenge
C.After a few days, think back over the event.
D.Emotions are a natural part of the human experience.
E.Some people feel a sense of grief after an event is over.
F.Nothing is perfect and few things live up to every expectation.
G.Embrace a sense of calm and let these simple practices melt away stress.

When I was young, my father was a secondary school teacher in Edensor, England. As the breadwinner, he was deeply engaged in his school responsibilities during my childhood. Consequently, I often felt distant from him because he had few moments to talk or interact with me. My mother, a full-time housewife, managed the household and took care of my younger bother and me, busting around the kitchen, bedrooms and grocery stores. The back garden of our house was a special place for me; it was not only a secure spot for kids but also my dad’s favorite hobby area. Whenever he was home, he would spend most of his spare time looking after his treasured roses, which my mother also adored.
My father would care for his roses with great devotion and affection. Often, I would watch beside him, curious or eager for his attention, but he was usually preoccupied He regularly watered the roses, cleaned the leaves, loosened and turned over the soil, and fed them with essential nutrients. His expectation was the joy and sweetness brought by their blossoming.
One day, I saw him cut off some branches and stems. Then, with a sharp knife, he carefully made marks on the main branches. He cut open the marked spots to insert sprouts (嫩枝) into those new cuts and wrapped them with bandages. After all his efforts, he reminded us never to touch them. From then on, whenever my father returned home from work, he would go straight to tend to those plants.
Within a month, we all witnessed the entire process: tender stems grow, form buds, and finally bear blossoms in various colors. The garden soon became a place of immense beauty, filled with rose blossoms and surrounded by their sweet fragrance. My parents truly enjoyed themselves there, and so did my brother Tommy and I. Those roses brought us immense happiness, and no one, especially me, wanted to let go of such beauty.
注意:

根据第一段中“In her tiny but cozy Athens apartment, a 93-year-old Greek woman whose name is Ioanna Matsouka has knit thousands of brightly coloured scarves for children in shelters from Greece to Ukraine — and she has no plans to quit just yet.(在她位于雅典的狭小但舒适的公寓里,93岁的希腊老妇人约安娜 马苏卡已经为从希腊到乌克兰的收容所里的孩子们编织了数千条色彩鲜艳的围巾——而且她还没有打算就此放弃)”和第四段中“Sadly, Matsouka’s vision is impaired and she suffers from bouts of severe facial pain, a condition known as trigeminal neuralgia (三叉神经痛). Despite this, Matsouka still keeps knitting one scarf a day, with small imperfections.(令人难过的是,马苏卡的视力受损了,而且她还饱受一阵阵剧烈的面部疼痛之苦,这种病症被称为三叉神经痛。 所以Kind-hearted and persistent(心地善良且坚持不懈)最能描述她。故选D项。
【答案】8.B 9.D 10.A 11.D
根据第二段“But all that constant stream of depressing news about the environment can get in the way of taking action.(但是,不断传来的关于环境的令人沮丧的消息可能会阻碍我们采取行动)”可知,这些源源不断的负面环境新闻会阻碍人们采取行动,故选B项。
根据文章第三段内容“It’s our way of talking about the behavioral changes we have identified that not only reduce greenhouse gas emissions but also provide a greater sense of hope, appreciation, gratitude or fulfillment in our daily lives.(这是我们谈论我们发现的行为改变的方式,这些改变不仅减少了温室气体排放,而且在我们的日常生活中提供了更大的希望、欣赏、感激或成就感)”可知,“happy climate approach(快乐气候方法)”是指那些不仅能减少温室气体排放,还能在日常生活中带来希望、感激等积极感受的行为变化。
根据文章倒数第二段内容“And there’s a simple rule that I use to stay in a good mental state. For every piece of bad climate news I encounter, I make sure t read at least one positive article on the climate. To prevent myself from constantly scrolling through disheartening news, I’ve adjusted my newsfeed (新闻推送) so that I can see positive climate news on a regular basis, which brings me joy and hope.(我用一个简单的规则来保持良好的精神状态。
【答案】12.D 13.A 14.B 15.A
根据第一段“we supposed it could alter the emotional content of existing memories, through the process of memory reactivation.(我们认为它可以通过重新激活记忆的过程来改变现有记忆的情感内容)”以及第二段“To test this, we conducted a three-day experiment.(为了验证这一点,我们进行了为期三天的实验)”可知,进行这个实验是为了验证“音乐可能通过再激活来改变现有记忆的情感内容”这一假设,故选D项。
根据第三段内容“When participants recalled stories with music, there was increased activity in the hippocampus and amygdala. This is why a song associated with a significant life event can feel so powerful — it activates both emotion-and memory-processing regions at the same time. We also observed strong communication between these emotional memory processing areas of the brain and the areas involved in visual sensory processing. This suggests that music might add emotional details into memories while participants are visually imagining the stories.(当参与者用音乐回忆故事时,海马体和杏仁核的活动增加。
根据最后一段“It also paves new paths for exploring music-based interventions in the treatment of depression and other mental health conditions.(它还为探索以音乐为基础的干预措施治疗抑郁症和其他精神健康状况铺平了新的道路)”可知,作者认为精心挑选的音乐对治疗抑郁症和其他心理健康问题开辟了新道路,所以作者的态度是积极的,故选B项。
【答案】16.E 17.A 18.G 19.C 20.F

本空后的时间状语“over the years”常与现在完成时连用,其结构为“have/has+过去分词”,主语“Guiyang”是第三人称单数,故填has earned。
故填to shelter。
故填an。
故填without。

One sunny day, I decided to do something as my dad had done to have more roses. Without telling anyone, I took a pair of scissors and began my “gardening project”. I carefully selected a few branches, and with trembling hands, I made the first cut, hoping it would lead to a new rose. I then made clumsy marks on the remaining stems and tried to insert any twigs I could find. The garden soon turned into a chaotic scene, with cut branches and scattered leaves everywhere. I was so absorbed in my work that I failed to notice how much of a mess I had created, thinking I was on my way to making the garden even more beautiful.
Later that day, when my dad saw the great mess I had made, he was totally shocked. He froze in his tracks and his eyes widened in disbelief as he stared at the damaged roses. At first, I was terrified, fearing his anger. But instead of scolding, he gently asked why I did this. I tearfully told him I wanted more roses like he did. He took a deep breath, his initial shock giving way to a gentle smile. Kneeling beside me, he placed a hand on my shoulder and said, “Let me show you how it’s really done.” From that day on, he spent more time teaching me about gardening, and our relationship bloomed like those beautiful roses in the garden.
