How bloody a scene! Blood Falls in Antarctica is a waterfall (瀑布) which shoots blood-red water into a river. The sight is a perfect background for a horror film: mysterious and of course bloody. Its special color was long believed to be caused by the red algae (海藻). Until 2017, the true cause of the so-called blood was proved to be oxidized iron in saltwater.Impressive yet a dangerous sight, frozen bubbles (气泡) can be seen in winters at Abraham Lake in Canada. When methane (甲烷) gas gets crowded underwater and freezes, it will finally form the special sight—frozen bubbles. Such plenty of methane is highly risky. So even a lit match nearby can cause an explosion (爆炸).Mirror of the SkyDuring the new moon and full moon periods, tourists can see a clear reflection of the sky in the waters of Sasaran Beach in Malaysia. The smooth sand and the lowest water level create such an unbelievable sight. Also known as the “Mirror of the Sky”, this water beach is an amazing place to take pictures and thus a perfect travel destination.

Some animals can easily find their way home after a long journey. How do they make it Scientific research shows that they are born with certain unusual abilities for direction.
A certain kind of ants, for example, can count their steps to avoid getting lost. They can go as far as 110 metres and bring food home. These ants live in the open desert (沙漠), so they have nothing to guide them along the way. It’s like someone walking six kilometres through a dark forest.
Some fish have an unbelievable sense of smell. They can smell even a single drop of their home water in a large sea area. Some sea birds have a similar ability. They are able to make a smell map of their flying areas.
Some animals can sense the earth’s magnetic field (磁场), while humans can’t. This magnetic field guides a certain kind of fish when they swim a long way to a place and then back. How can this kind of fish do that It is still a mystery. Scientists have no good answers yet.
However, animals with such unusual abilities still have difficulty dealing with environmental changes caused by human activities. Surrounded (围绕) by trees and filled with ponds (池塘) and pools of water, the Chinese village of Ding Wuling should be covered with mosquitoes (蚊子), especially during the summer time. However, it is reported that mosquitoes haven’t been seen here for almost a century.
The village with a long history is in the mountains of China’s Fujian Province. There are many special stone houses. But in recent years, the culture and buildings of this village have been overshadowed (使失色) by a mystery — the absence (缺乏) of mosquitoes.
It’s unclear whether scientists ever made a survey to get to know this mystery. But most of the people in Ding Wuling believe it has something to do with the toad-shaped (蟾蜍形状的) stone. They believe that the stone prevents the mosquitoes from entering the village.

When the Chinese newspaper People’s Daily first reported the mystery of this mosquito-free village, the local villagers hoped that experts (专家) could soon offer a certain answer to the mystery and put Ding Wuling on the tourist map.
Unluckily, I haven’t been able to find newer information about Ding Wuling and its mosquito mystery, so it’s possible that the whole thing was made up to help develop tourism in the area. Then again, there might be something special about that toad-shaped stone. Who knows

Most of us know what it’s like to get presents from friends. Whether it’s for a birthday or other celebrations, it’s hard to beat the excitement of opening a box to find something that’s unexpected and fits you well. Now, imagine if you could get the same feeling when you go shopping for yourself. That’s the feeling that mystery boxes hope to give you.
Mystery boxes are not a new idea—People did this in stores in Japan in the early 20th century. They sell a group of different products more cheaply than normal. The key thing is that customers don’t know what’s in the box before they buy. All kinds of mystery boxes are available: fashion boxes, food boxes, beauty boxes and so on.
The pleasant surprise is not the only amazing thing about mystery boxes. They also allow people to try new things. Seasonal (季节性的) vegetable boxes might lead people to learn to cook new meals. They can also help people to save money—as these products are often far more expensive than when they are in the mystery boxes. For sellers the benefit (收益) is clear. It allows them to sell their unwanted products in their stores. The British fashion mystery box boss Mario Maher explains how mystery boxes can help to make the waste less. If some of these products are not sold in the mystery boxes, they will probably be thrown away.
However, there is a downside to mystery boxes when you buy them. You don’t know what you’ll get! It may be that the goods inside are not to your taste, and there is also the risk for cheats to sell products in the mystery box more expensively.
So, are mystery boxes a fun way of making waste less and making shopping more exciting Or are they Just a way to trick people and make them disappointed It’s something to think about!
( )12. What does Paragraph 2 mainly tell us
A. The start of mystery boxes.
B. The changes of mystery boxes.
C. The bad things of mystery boxes.
D. The good things of mystery boxes.
( )13. What is the benefit of mystery boxes for sellers
A. They can help to make the waste beautiful.
B. They can throw away their unwanted products.
C. They can sell their products more expensively.
D. They can sell their unwanted products in their stores.
( )14. What’s the Chinese meaning of “downside” in Paragraph 4
A. 积极 B. 负面
C. 下边 D. 斜边
( )15. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage
A. Mystery boxes usually make people excited.
B. Mystery boxes have appeared in the last few years.

There are only three girls with good English handwriting in our class. They are Rose, Lisa and Lucy.
The paper without the name might belong to Rose, but I’m not sure. Because she is not so good at English. It can’t be Lisa’s. Although she is a top student and does well in English, she has already got hers in hand. So it must belong to Lucy. Today she asks for sick leave and stays at home. What’s more, she often gets full marks in English exams. Well, now I’m sure it’s hers.
