At the end of each term, your teacher gives you the report card. Seeing it, you’ll feel upset and realize that your parents are going to be very angry. There is nothing you can do to change the past. So, what can you do now
First, find out what the problem is. Do you have any bad learning habits For example, you don’t listen to the teachers carefully or you don’t finish your homework on time. If so, you can solve them on your own—make a promise to change your behavior! However, if you study hard and still get a bad grade, you probably need some extra (额外的) help with your classes. Talk to your teacher and he or she will give you some proper advice. Next, make a detailed plan for how you will improve your grades and try to make it.
While all parents want children to get good grades, most of them understand that not every report card is perfect. Shelby Lattimore works as a math teacher at a school in North Carolina, America. When he discovered some of his students were often absent from school and that some didn’t pay attention in class, he found a clever way to encourage them not only to attend school but also to get excited about learning. He created a programme called “My Class Economy”.
At the start of each month of the school year, Lattimore’s students have to pay rents (租金) for their class desks and chairs. They can make money by doing different jobs around the classroom. They can be a door holder, a line leader, a cleaner or the class pet helper. They get paid every two weeks, and how much money they can get depends on which job they take on. Of course, if they act properly in class or make progress in study, they can also get money. It’s worth mentioning that Lattimore collects and gives play money instead of real money. After the students get the play money, they can use it to buy rewards once a month, such as candies, free time and a change of seats. They can even pay $30 to be the teacher for a day. But if they spend too much, they’ll experience a money shortage until their next pay day. And if they are absent from school or late for class, they will be fined.
The programme works. Lattimore’s students have changed a lot since the programme started. “They all like it,” Lattimore said. “They not only learn math, but also learn about the value of money.”
( )12. Why did Lattimore create the “My Class Economy” programme

September is a big month for students in China since the new term begins from now on. In ancient China, the school entrance ceremony (入学典礼) was one of the most important ceremonies.
Children began school between the ages of 4 and 7 in ancient China. Since there was no certain time to begin a new term at that time, the most important thing for parents was to choose a lucky day for their children to enter school. Next, parents would prepare some school things for their children, including desks, chairs and four treasures of the study.
In ancient times, teachers were usually very knowledgeable local persons. Parents would prepare many gifts, and then write a letter of invitation to ask a knowledgeable man to be their children’s teacher.
On the day their children entered school, parents would take them to take part in the First Writing Ceremony. Before that, children would kowtow (叩头) to the statue of Confucius (孔子像) 9 times and then to their teacher 3 times to show their deep respect (尊敬). During the ceremony, the teacher would put a red point on the students’ forehead (前额) as it meant opening the wisdom eye. Children would also ring a certain bell to start a new term. After that, they could finally sit down in their seats and begin to study. The First Writing Ceremony was a very important ceremony for every student.
Every day, students would arrive at school earlier than their teacher, and kowtow to the statue of Confucius, and then go back to the seats. Usually the teacher would give every student a new name, which was used for future Imperial Examination (科举考试).
Today, some schools are starting to hold an entrance ceremony like they did in ancient times. Students put on traditional costumes and bow to the statue of Confucius and their teachers. This means that from this moment, they take a step in the lifelong journey of learning.
