Scientists in Switzerland said that new devices (设备) helped a man walk again, 12 years after an accident left him paralyzed (unable to move parts of the body). It is the first technology of this kind to be successfully used in humans. The technology could also help people with the same problem get control over their bodies again.
Gert-Jan Oskam was in an accident in 2011 that harmed his spinal cord (脊髓). The spinal cord connects the brain to the rest of the body, allowing messages to be sent. When the spinal cord is hurt, signals from the brain can’t get through to certain body parts. For Oskam, they were his legs.
Researchers put devices in Oskam’s skull (头骨) and spine. They acted as a “bridge” , allowing information to travel from his brain to the rest of his body without passing through the wounded part of the spinal cord.
After lots of training, Oskam can now walk a short distance with a cane(手杖) — even when the devices are off. This might mean that Oskam’s spinal cord seems to be making new connections.
The “bridge” solution isn’t perfect. It costs a lot and needs difficult operations and lots of training. But the scientists are hopeful that in the future, this sort of technology will allow many paralyzed people to walk again.

The world’s oldest known musical instruments are more than 40,000 years old. For tens of thousands of years, humans have been making music for pleasure and to express themselves. Recently, there has been a rise in the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to create music. Some AI music has become so popular online. The technology has been used by lots of musicians. Some people think that using AI to produce music isn’t creative enough because it just makes songs out of old music. What do you think Is AI bad for new music
Yes—AI music is not creative, says Peter
Using AI might be cheaper than paying a musician. If companies can use AI to produce popular music that makes lots of money from people buying and listening to it, it could put musicians like me out of work. If musicians can’t earn money from music, there will be far fewer of them creating new songs. Anyway, listening to music that was made by a computer isn’t the same experience as listening to human-made music.
When I create songs, I put different feelings and real experiences into my work, creating songs that connect with people at a deep level. Songs produced by AI aren’t original because the computer just makes music from the old one. AI music isn’t completely creative.
No—AI can produce new ideas, says Mary
I’m a music lover. When I turn on my radio or headphones and a great new song comes on, it makes me feel good. Wonderful music brings people together to sing and dance. If people are enjoying music, does it matter whether it was made by a human or a machine
I think music makers can use computers, which can help to perfect sound and mix different layers of a song. For them, AI is just another new technology, a tool that they can use to express ideas. It won’t replace musicians but they can work with it. Building on music created by AI could help them save time. It could allow much more music to be produced and it could lead to new and special styles of music. AI could create exciting music that humans could never have dreamed of.
Now that you’ve read a bit more about it, tell us what you think at theweekjunior.co.uk. We’ll publish the result next week.
( )12. What is the purpose of the passage
A. To suggest what humans can do with the help of AI.
B. To show how AI helps musicians produce new ideas.
C. To share ideas on whether AI is suitable for new music.
D. To explain the reasons why more people like AI music.
( )13. Which of the following does Mary most probably agree with
A. AI helps musicians make more money.
B. AI music will take the place of musicians.
C. Human-made music is better than AI music.
D. AI is a new tool to help musicians express ideas.
( )14. What does the underlined word “original” mean
A. New and interesting. B. Similar and real.
C. Private and popular. D. Usual and exciting.
( )15. Which section is most likely to be part of the magazine next week

范文:
Dear schoolmates,
Recently, it’s said that the use of textbooks is becoming a waste of resources. Our school has done some research on recycling textbooks.
38% of the students think textbooks should not be recycled, because they want to take notes by themselves. Also, they are worried about public health. However, 62% of the students think textbooks should be recycled because recycling textbooks is a good way to save the forest. For another reason, it’s good for us to learn some good notes from the recycled textbooks.
In my opinion, it is necessary to recycle textbooks. Recycling textbooks can not only save resources but also help us take up a good habit to save money.
As a saying goes, “All these small things can add up and become big things that can improve the environment.” Let’s take action to recycle textbooks together!
