Smoking, which may be a pleasure for some people, is a serious source of discomfort for their fellows.Medical scientists express their concern1 about the effect of smoking on the health not only of those who smoke but also of those who do not.In fact,non-smokers who take in the air polluted2 by tobacco smoke may suffer more than the smokers themselves. Researchers studied data and found 40% of children and more than 30% of non-smoking men and women regularly3 breathe in second-hand smoke.
Scientists then estimated4 that second-hand smoke causes about 603,000 deaths a year. These account for about 1% of the world’s deaths. The study helps us understand the real toll5 of tobacco.Further, the deaths from second-hand smoke should be added to the 5.1 million that smoking itself causes every year.

During adolescence(青春期),peers(同龄人)play a large part in a young person’s life and typically replace family as the centre of a teen’s social activities. Some kids give in to peer pressure because they want to be liked or because they worry that other kids may make fun of them if they don’t go along with the group.Others may go along because they are curious to try something new that others are doing. The idea that “everyone’s doing it” may influence some kids to leave their better judgment,or their common sense, behind.
As children grow, develop and move into early adolescence, contacts with one’s peers and the attraction of peer identification(认同)increase. As pre-adolescents begin rapid physical, emotional and social changes, they begin to question adult standards and the need for parental guidance. They find it good to turn for advice to friends who understand—friends who are in the same position themselves.By trying new things and testing their ideas with their peers, there is less fear of being laughed at.
There are two levels of peer pressure. The first is in the large group:for most teens a school or a youth group are examples. This is the situation that gets the most attention. The second is in the close relationship with one or several best friends. This is the situation that is sometimes disregarded. The large group puts a general pressure on its members. It sets the standard for clothing, music, entertainment, and“political correctness”.The pressure can be avoided by keeping quiet or by putting on the appearance of agreement.
1.Why can’t some children follow their common sense?
A.Because they want to be liked by everybody.
B.Because they don’t want to make fun of others.
C.Because they are curious about their new friends.
D.Because they think all the children will do the same.
根据文章第一段最后一句“The idea that‘everyone’s doing it’may influence some kids to leave their better judgment,or their common sense, behind.”
2.When in pre-adolescence,who may children ask for suggestions?

A.Parents. B.Teachers.
C.Friends. D.Classmates.
根据文章第二段中“They find it good to turn for advice to friends who understand—friends who are in the same position themselves.”
3.Which word can replace the underlined word “disregarded”in the last paragraph?
A.Unnoticed. B.Mentioned.
C.Disagreed. D.Avoided.
答案:A
根据“The second is in the close relationship with one or several best friends. This is the situation that is sometimes disregarded.”可知这样的情况和“The first is in the large group”中的群体给他的影响不一样,往往会受到人们的忽视。
4.What might be discussed in the following paragraph?
A.The reasons of peer pressure.
B.The advantages of peer pressure.
C.Peer pressure from close friends.
D.Peer pressure from a youth group.
文章最后一段的“The large group puts a general pressure on its members. It sets the standard for clothing, music, entertainment, and‘political correctness’.The pressure can be avoided by keeping quiet or by putting on the appearance of agreement.”

If invited to try alcohol or drugs, how to say no to your friends?
Ways teens can say no to alcohol and drugs
Many teens will be asked to try alcohol or drugs by friends or classmates. As parents, the best thing we can do is to give them ways to say no.
Teens can use an excuse, such as:
1.I can’t stay;I have to help my dad with something.
2.That stuff1 makes me sick. Teens can explain to their friends about the dangers of the stuff:
1.Haven’t you heard about the kid in the news who died from doing that?
2.Go ahead if you want to kill yourself—I don’t want to.
Teens can also just be honest with their friends:
1.I’m not into that.
2.My mom would kill me if she found out.
3.Forget it.There’s no way I’m going to try drugs.
4.I’ve got more to do with my life.
Once your teens have given their answers, they should be ready to leave. It hardly does any good to argue with someone about alcohol or drugs, and it might make it difficult for your teens to stick with their answers if they stay. Kids should be confident in their answers.By giving a firm2“No”,your teens can actually influence their friends in a good way.Teens tend to follow a strong leader among them, and sometimes all it takes is a positive teen that says no to drugs to keep the whole group away from drugs.

A ban on smoking in public places has come into force in China—home to a third of the world’s smokers.
The move is aimed at controlling the number of deaths from smoking-related diseases, running at a million a year.
But the rules have been criticised, because they do not include punishments for those who choose to ignore them.
Many business owners hate rules that force them to ban smoking on their premises(经营场所)because many customers do not like the rules and complain.
The rules do not allow smoking in places like restaurants, hotels, railway stations or theatres, but not at the office.
Employers have a duty to warn staff off the dangers of smoking but do not have to forbid them from lighting up at their desks.
Shanghai introduced similar rules a year ago,but people do not seem to take much notice of them.Often you find people smoking at the next table while you are eating your meal or having a drink in a bar.The problem is that the rules do not include punishments for businesses or individuals who ignore them.
It appears that many Chinese people are unaware of the dangers of smoking.Research suggests that only one in four knows the harm cigarettes of second-hand smoke can cause.?
Officials say they have to try to persuade people not to smoke to reduce the numbers dying from smoking-related diseases.
At the same time the government makes a lot of money from the sales of cigarettes by the state-owned firm that makes and sells all tobacco products throughout the country.
21.The number of smokers in China makes up about of the world’s smokers.?

A.66% B.44%
C.33% D.55%
答案:C

22.We can replace the underlined part in the passage with “ ”.?
A.are concerned about B.are curious about
C.don’t know D.don’t care
23.Why have the rules been criticised by some people?
A.Because those people don’t want to be punished.
B.Because they do not include punishments for those who choose to ignore the rules.
C.Because the rules are ignored by all the people who smoke.
D.Because nobody takes notice of the rules.
根据第三段中的“...because they do not include punishments for those who choose to ignore them.”
24.If the government wants to ban smoking in public places,it should .?
A.only rely on educating people
B.take more effective measures
C.punish those who ignore the rules
D.let people know more about the dangers of smoking

Should electronic cigarettes be a new choice for smokers trying to kick the habit?Opinions from Americans are different.
More than half of the people questioned in a survey think electronic cigarettes should be controlled by the US Food and Drug Administration, but 47 percent believe they should be allowed to be sold to those smokers who want to quit.
“In the search for a safer cigarette, electronic cigarettes, often referred to as e-cigarettes,are becoming popular among those either trying to quit or who are looking to replace standard tobacco smoke with something that producers think to be safer,” Zogby International, which made the survey, said in a statement.
About half of the 4,611 adults who took part in the survey had heard about e-cigarettes,which are battery-powered devices that turn liquid nicotine into gas. They do not produce smoke but an odorless(not smelly)water vapour.
Last year the WHO warned against using e-cigarettes,saying there was no evidence to prove they were safe or help smokers break the habit. The WHO said people who smoke e-cigarettes breathe the same amount of nicotine into the lungs.
Nearly a third of the people questioned in the survey think that e-cigarettes,because they don’t produce smoke, should be allowed in places where smoking is not allowed, but 46 percent disagree.Men who know about e-cigarettes are more likely than women to say the smokers who want to quit should be allowed to enjoy them.Young people, aged 18-29,and singles are the groups most open to trying e-cigarettes.
Tobacco is the largest cause of preventable death worldwide, according to the WHO.
29.In the 2nd paragraph, the underlined word “they” refers to the .?
A.survey-takers B.smokers
C.FDA D.e-cigarettes
30.The WHO’s attitude to e-cigarettes can be best described as .?
A.favourable B.doubtful
C.neutral(中立的) D.optimistic
31.According to the survey, about of the 4611 adults who took part in the survey think e-cigarettes should be allowed in places where smoking is not allowed.?
A.2,305 B.1,537
C.923 D.1,153
根据第六段第一句“Nearly a third of the people...think that e-cigarettes,because they...,should be allowed in places where smoking is not allowed”可知,4,611÷3=1,537。

My parents have always raised me to be very money-conscious,so I guess,in that sense, they are rather untraditional.Since I was a little girl,if I ever wanted to buy anything,my parents would strictly remind me of the value of every cent, prompting me to spend my pocket money only when necessary. My mom actually came up with a system that we strictly abide by in regards to money-spending.She gives me a certain amount of allowance(零用钱) every month, and whenever I buy anything with my accumulated money,I keep track of my receipts and recorded it in a little notebook, just like my mom’s own accounting booklet.
Being in control of own money has really taught me to be careful in how to spend my money by giving me a sense of responsibility and ownership over it.
As for making money,my parents never encouraged me to go out and find a job at restaurants or clothing stores.Instead, they would prefer that I spend my time doing my schoolwork, which I guess is where my parents become more traditional.Yet I still earn money here and there in little jobs, such as tutoring students at my school and of course, writing for the paper.
Though several friends are already working,I am pretty happy with my present situation.I am able to concentrate on my studies, all the while making quite a bit of money, and also learning monetary(货币的) skills that are crucial to survival in the real world, and for that I am thankful.

Drugs are addictive and harmful. So we must keep away from them. But how? Here are some tips for you.
Firstly, learn about the bad effects of drugs.Read books and articles about drug addiction. It’s easier to say no to drugs when you have all the facts.
Secondly, don’t accept anything like cigarettes from strangers.Don’t even talk to them. The more you talk to them, the more likely you will be persuaded to take drugs.
