George Gershwin, born in 1898,was one of America’s greatest composers. He published his first song when he was eighteen years old.During the next twenty years he wrote more than five hundred songs.
Many of Gershwin’s songs were first written for musical plays performed in theatres in New York City. These plays were a popular form of entertainment in the 1920s and 1930s.Many of his songs have remained popular up to now.Over the years they have been sung and played in every possible way—from jazz to country.
In the 1920s there was a debate in the United States about jazz music.Could jazz, some people asked,be considered serious music? In 1924 jazz musician and orchestra leader Paul Whiteman decided to organise a special concert to show that jazz was serious music.Gershwin agreed to compose something for the concert before he realised he had just a few weeks to do it.And in that short time,he composed a piece for piano and orchestra which he called Rhapsody in Blue.Gershwin himself played the piano at the concert. The audience were thrilled when they heard his music. It made him world-famous and showed that jazz music could be both serious and popular.
In 1928,Gershwin went to Paris. He applied to study composition(作曲)with the well-known musician Nadia Boulanger, but she rejected him.She was afraid that classical study would ruin his jazz-influenced style. While there,Gershwin wrote An American in Paris. When it was first performed, critics(评论家)were divided over the music. Some called it happy and full of life, and to others it was silly and boring. But it quickly became popular in Europe and the United States. It still remains one of his most famous works.
George Gershwin died in 1937,just days after doctors learned he had brain cancer. He was only thirty-nine years old.Newspapers all over the world reported his death on their front pages.People mourned the loss of the man and all the music he might have still written.

The other day I heard a few local musicians talking:
“I hate all the pianos in this town and I hate that rubbish they play on the radio. They cannot even understand rhythm(韵律).”
“Nobody wants to pay musicians anything.I’m sick of all the people who want you to play without paying you.”
One younger musician said,“There are several clubs who want me to play for a few nights a month and I’m trying to find other places to play.I’m also planning to join in several summer festivals this year.”
I really liked what the younger musician said so I made friends with him.
Attitudes are important.Whether they’re positive or negative(消极) they’re all rubbing off on you.If you’re around people who are always complaining or blaming others,it is possible that you will start doing the same as well.If you spend lots of time with people who don’t support your dreams,it is time to take a look at the people you call“friends”.?
There is an easy exercise you can try.Make a list of the people who you often stay with, and simply stop, spending time with the negative ones on your list.Set a new standard for yourself and don’t become friends with people who fall below that standard.
Of course, this exercise is entirely different from making friends only for the good of oneself. We really should try to help and spend time with those who are working towards a goal or dream.
15.The musicians’ conversation at the beginning is there to show that .?
A.musicians’ living conditions are not good
B.people in that town have poor taste in music

A.they’ll have an influence on you
B.they’ll help you realise your dreams
C.they’ll keep you from moving on
D.they’ll push you ahead very hard
答案:A
根据“If you’re around people who are always complaining or blaming others,it is possible that you will start doing the same as well.If you spend lots of time with people who don’t support your dreams,it is time to take a look at the people you call ‘friends’.” 故选A项。
17.Why did the author want to make friends with the younger musician?
A.He is more active than the others.
B.He can earn more than the others.
C.His attitude is more positive than the others.
D.He has more things to do than the others.
答案:C

1 However, nobody asked if there was a common number that thousands of people loved enough,to call it their favorite. But now, thanks to London-based author Alex Bellos,it appears that such a number does exist and it is number seven!?
Bellos who has written a lot of books about mathematics and spent a large amount of time talking about the subject at schools, universities, and festivals,is always asked about his favorite number. 2 But he soon realized that it was because many people felt an emotional attachment to numbers.?
Curious to see if that was indeed the case.Bellos decided to set up an online survey and ask the people all over the world to pick their favorite number. 3 Here is what he found out:Though almost every number was selected,it was seven that appeared to be the most popular—4,000 or 10% of the people that took the survey, picked it as their favorite number.?
4 There is the cultural meaning as evidenced by the seven ancient wonders of the world, seven days in a week, and last but not least seven circles of the universe.?
If that is not convincing enough,Bellos also points out the importance of the number in another aspect.Seven is the only number between one and ten that can’t be multiplied or divided by any other number within that group. For example, multiply one, two, three, four, and five by two and the answer can be found within the group. 5 Nine can be divided by three.Seven is the only number that stands untouchable!?
A.At first,the question annoyed him.
B.Six,eight and ten can be divided by two.
C.People like it because of some religious reasons.
D.Many people don’t like number thirteen and try to avoid it.
E.To his surprise, about 44,000 people took the online survey.

Have you ever wondered what kind of music the kids across the Pacific Ocean are listening to?Are they crazy about Britney Spears?Do they love the Backstreet Boys?Or do they dance to Eminem?
Well, nearly 6,000 teens have taken part in a Teens & Music study, conducted by USA Weekend Magazine. And the results show what type of music is hot and what is not.It comes as no surprise that hip-hop and rap are the most popular types of music among American teenagers. They began in the mid-1970s,with young black kids in New York, taking music onto the streets.Hip-hop and rap are well-known for the break-dancing(霹雳舞) that goes with them.
The word “rap”comes from a 1960s slang(俚语) word for conversation. It is a rapid, slangy rhyme that is spoken rather than sung.
Eminem is among the most popular rappers ever to hit the US.His first album The Marshall Mathers LP topped the American music charts in May 2000.Although about a third of teens in the US showed their support for him, almost as many said that his music was so boring that they couldn’t listen to it.
Compared with Eminem, actor rapper Will Smith is more of a star for the kids.He was awarded the Wannabe Award,at Nickelodeon’s 16th Annual Kids’ Choice Awards. It is an award given to a celebrity whom kids most want to be.
Pop music, such as Britney Spears and the Backstreet Boys, has always suited the tastes of the general public. It continues to enjoy support among teens and is the second most popular after rap.
The third is rock music with excited dance beats and simple lyrics that speak loudly of social problems. The melodies are led by electric guitars.Rock became popular in the US in the early 1950s.American singer Elvis Presley and British group the Beatles became world-famous rock artists.
The study also shows that jazz is least loved by American teens. It developed in the later part of the 19th century from a mixture of African work songs and hymns.Jazz tends to be the type of music that people enjoy more as they get old.

American country music
As an important form of music, how much do you know about American country music?
Over the past twenty years,American country music has become more and more popular.
Songwriters are no longer writing about the modern values1 of the USA—money, success or expensive things to buy.Instead they are writing once more about things that are common for everyone:feeling alone in the modern world, the value of having good friends and so on.
In the 1950s,American music was about other things, for example, love—getting or losing a boyfriend or girlfriend.Money was also thought to be important. Then in the 1960s songwriters turned to other subjects.During these years many young students were angry with society,so songs were often full of anger.Political2 leaders were not well thought of and those songs often made fun of them.
Today country music has returned. It has become big business. It brings in between 200 and 400 million dollars a year.Once the home of American country music was Nashville,Tennessee. Now,however, the music has reached all parts of the States, from Los Angeles in the west to New York in the east.Singers do not just come from the States but from all over the world. There are many famous singers from Britain,Canada and Australia.A lot of them appear on television too. The first country singers sang while playing the guitar. It was easy for them to carry a guitar on their travels. Now,however,a lot of electrical equipment is needed for large theatres.
Country music today remains much the same as before. One subject to which country music often returns is “the good old days”.In “the good old days” people thought well of each other.People loved life in the open air. They believed that the best things in life were free:sunshine, laughing, walks in the beauty of the country, friends and music.

The term country music refers to a variety of styles, originally popular among working class white Americans in the rural areas of the South and West.Originally known as “hillbilly music”,the term was replaced by country and western music in 1949 and eventually shortened to country music.
But the origins of country music can be traced back to a century ago. There are many immigrants from Britain and Ireland.Their songs and dances, nursery rhymes and ballads, would form the most important part of the folk musical tradition of rural America, and the basis for what became known as “old time”music.
These roots of country music lie largely in the folk songs and instrumental music of the English,Irish, and Scots who settled in the Appalachian areas of the Mid-South during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Many of these mountainous areas were not settled until the 1830s,and then by impoverished immigrants who were concerned with the daily struggle for survival. The communities were cut off from the rest of America and still attached to their traditions.
Other origins of country music can be traced back to the flamenco and habanera music of Spain, the polka and other dances of Eastern Europe and—as with almost all the popular music of the United States—the influence of the slave populations shipped from the African continent. In fact one of the major instruments in Appalachian and early country music, the banjo, has its origins in Afro-American history.
Two publishing events in the early part of the 20th century excited a widespread interest in America’s white musical tradition and “old time” music.First,in 1910,the musicologist John Lomax published Cowboy Songs and Other Frontier Ballads. Then in 1916 the English song collector Cecil Sharp put together a collection of folk music from the Appalachian mountains.
But it wasn’t until 1922,when Texas fiddler(小提琴家) Eck Robertson cut the first record of “old time”music, that the popularity of what also became known as“hillbilly music”really began to grow, via pioneering artists, record labels and radio stations. The record that more generally gets cited as the first country release was made in June 1923 by Fiddlin’ John Carson.
