In 1800, about 223 years ago, the Italian scientist Alessandro Volta made the world's first battery(电池). Before this, the only way for people to create electricity was to rub (摩擦)many materials together. The way could result in static electricity(静电).This form of electrical power, however, could hardly be used in daily life.
Volta knew that some kinds of eels (鳗鱼)could produce electricity. He thought that if he could understand how they worked, he might find a better way to create electricity. So he carefully studied these eels.
One day, Volta did a test, and then he succeeded. Volta thought he had discovered the secret of how eels produce their electricity. Based on this invention of the test, he later created his battery.
Volta probably thanked eels for his success. However, scientists now know that his discovery had nothing to do with the way that these eels produce their electricity. Rather, the eels use another way to produce their electricity. Volta's thought is much easier than the real way.
Scientists are now trying to improve batteries. The eels have continued to help them. A team of scientists from the United States and Switzerland is working on a soft battery. But the scientists admit that they still have a long way to go. “The electric organs in eels are far better in creating power than we are,” says one of them. The natural world is truly amazing.
