Sitting on the peaceful coast(海岸) of the Galapagos Islands,Ecuador, watching the sun move quietly into the sea,you shouldn’t forget that Charles Darwin(1809—1882)arrived here in 1835.He stayed on the islands for five weeks, observing various animals. This finally inspired(激发) his famous work,On the Origin of Species. You can certainly follow Darwin’s footsteps and enjoy a trip from four to seven days to the islands.
The islands are certainly a paradise(天堂) for wildlife,as there are no natural killers on the islands and the number of boats and visitors is under government control.Though you cannot walk freely as Darwin did about 200 years ago, each day is as impressive as it could be.
The most well-known animal of the Galapagos is the giant tortoise, which can be seen moving slowly around the highlands of Santa Cruz, the second largest island in the archipelago(群岛).Some of these creatures are so old that they might have been seen in their youth by Darwin himself.
Despite(不管) strict control over activities and timing, your stay on the Galapagos will be remembered as a chain of incomparable pictures:diving with sea lions that swim and play within inches of you;feeling small sharks touch your feet as you swim;and, most magically, seeing a whale and her baby surface with a great breath of air.
Travelling between the islands and observing the wildlife that so inspired Darwin, you will feel as though you are getting a special view of an untouched world. At night you will sleep on board the ship, leaving the wildlife in complete occupation of the islands, which are as undisturbed now as they have been since the beginning of time.
1.What do we know about Darwin’s visit to the islands?

B
High school was wonderful, but I had always felt uncomfortable as one of taller members of my class, standing a head above the other girls and stooping(弯腰)at the back of the line to avoid sticking out.
I especially hated being around large groups of people, like during the social hour after the church services.
My grandfather would watch me grow increasingly uncomfortable(不舒服的),but he didn’t laugh at me or try to comfort me.Instead,he would warn(警告) me.“Stand straight and tall,” he’d say,as I tried to shrink(退缩)myself.
And each time,I would obey him.Even at age 15,I understand that his advice was about more than just feet and inches.
My grandfather grew up in war-torn Europe. When German soldiers took his hometown, the beautiful and exciting city of Tarnow,Poland,he joined the Soviet army for his country’s freedom.“Stand straight;stand tall,” meant something else back then.I trusted my grandfather more than anyone else in my childhood. And whenever I was afraid of something,he would tell me stories of his life.
After the war,he took a boat for America on January 27,1947.All alone in a new country,he was frightened about his future.
Still,he marched head-on in the streets of New York.Soon he met other European immigrants(移民),each of them trying to find his or her own way.
If they could do it,why couldn’t he?“Stand straight;stand tall,” he would tell himself.
At first my grandfather refused to enter an American church. He was angry with God for the loss of his whole family back in Europe. However, soon he walked into the church that first time;he walked in proudly.?

6.When the author’s grandfather found her uncomfortable, what did he do?
A.He did nothing but watch her.
B.He warned her to be herself.
C.He comforted her in a soft voice.
D.He laughed at her for it.
答案:B

B.It was useless.

D.the author’s grandfather began to play tricks on God
答案:A

Would it surprise you to learn that, like animals, trees communicate with each other and pass on their wealth to the next generation(一代人)?
UBC Professor Simard explains how trees are much more complex than most of us ever imagined.Although Charles Darwin thought that trees are competing for survival of the fittest, Simard shows just how wrong he was.In fact, the opposite is true:trees survive through their co-operation(合作) and support, passing around necessary nutrition “depending on who needs it”.?
Nitrogen (氮) and carbon are shared through miles of underground fungi (真菌) networks, making sure that all trees in the forest ecological system(生态系统) give and receive just the right amount to keep them all healthy. This hidden system works in a very similar way to the networks of neurons (神经元)in our brains, and when one tree is destroyed,it affects all.
Simard talks about “mother trees”,usually the largest and oldest plants on which all other trees depend. She explains how dying trees pass on the wealth to the next generation, transporting important minerals to young trees so they may continue to grow. When humans cut down “mother trees” with no awareness(意识) of these highly complex “tree societies” or the networks on which they feed, we are reducing the chances of survival for the entire forest.
“We didn’t take any notice of it,” Simard says sadly.“Dying trees move nutrition into the young trees before dying, but we never give them chance.” If we could put across the message to the forestry industry, we could make a huge difference towards our environmental protection efforts for the future.
1.The underlined sentence “the opposite is true” in Paragraph 2 probably means that trees .?
A.compete for survival
B.protect their own wealth
C.depend on each other
D.provide support for dying trees
根据画线句子后的内容“trees survive through their co-operation and support, passing around necessary nutrition ‘depending on who needs it’.”
2.“Mother trees” are extremely important because they .?
A.look the largest in size in the forest
B.pass on nutrition to young trees
C.seem more likely to be cut down by humans
D.know more about the complex “tree societies”
3.The underlined word “it” in the last paragraph refers to .?
A.how “tree societies” work
B.how trees grow old
C.how forestry industry develops
D.how young trees survive
答案:A
代词it通常用来指代上文的内容,根据第四段最后一句“When humans cut down ‘mother trees’ with no awareness of these highly complex ‘tree societies’ or the networks on which they feed, we are reducing the chances of survival for the entire forest.”
4.What would be the best title for the passage?
A.Old Trees Communicate like Humans
B.Young Trees Are in Need of Protection
C.Trees Are More Awesome than You Think
D.Trees Contribute to Our Society
答案:C

When humans and nature go head to head, nature often ends up losing.Rivers get polluted.Trees are knocked down.Natural resources are exhausted. That’s what makes the Galapagos Islands so special — it’s one of the few pristine (原始状态的) places on Earth that nature can truly call its own.
For people used to having wild animals run at the scent of humans,a visit to the Galapagos is a real eye-opening experience.Over 900 km west of continental Ecuador (厄瓜多尔),the islands are home to a unique variety of animals that have absolutely no fear of people.Visitors can play on the beach with sea lions and giant sea turtles, swim with dolphins and whales, and get close enough to the penguins (企鹅) to count the eggs in their nests.
The islands were declared a national park over 40 years ago,and the number of human visitors is tightly limited to avoid damaging the environment or putting stress on the animals.Tourists have to pay a $100 daily visitors fee,and can’t step off the boat unless accompanied (陪同) by an official guide.Once on the islands, you have to stay on the trail, but that rarely presents a problem:the animals are so curious about people that they’ll usually come up to say hello.
“It’s a little like being in a zoo,” said one traveler.“But instead of us looking at the animals, the animals are looking at us.”
Aside from the wildlife, one of the islands’ more unusual features is its post office. You can send postcards for free, but the catch is that there’s no postman to collect them.Instead, travelers pick up mail addressed to people who live near them back home, and then hand-deliver the postcards when their trip is finished.
5.The Galapagos Islands are .?
A.terribly polluted
B.near continental Ecuador

6.Which animal is NOT mentioned in the passage?
A.Whales. B.Sea lions.
C.Goats. D.Dolphins.

8.What would be the best title for the passage?
A.The Anti-Zoo
B.Humans and Nature
C.Go Head to Head
D.Ecuador — An Island Country

More and more people have realized the importance of protecting the wildlife. But some farmers in poor countries are making the land for the wildlife to grow food.

Elephants might be the most well-known and well-loved animals in African wildlife. But conservation(保护)of the African elephants faces special difficulties. While the elephant population is half of what it was 40 years ago, some areas of Africa have more elephants than populated areas can support. That’s why AWF scientists are studying elephant behaviour, protecting habits and finding ways for humans to live peacefully with elephants in Africa.
Years ago, overhunting and the ivory trade were the biggest threats to elephants’ survival.Luckily, ivory bans(禁令),hunting rules and protected areas protect elephants from these dangers today.
The 21st century brings a different challenge to elephant conservation—land use.Elephants walk across borders and outside parks and other protected areas. So they often destroy crops, causing conflicts(冲突)between local farmers and these big animals.
Successful conservation strategies(策略)must allow elephants to walk freely in their natural habitats while people reduce conflicts between elephants and local people.
AWF researchers are searching for a way to give both elephants and people the space they need. The AWF is collecting information on elephant habitats and behaviour. The information they gather will help to develop the widest possible space for elephants.
The AWF is helping elephants by protecting their habitats. And they also work with local farmers to improve their life in order to encourage them to protect rather than destroy elephants.
21.The first paragraph of the text is mainly to tell readers .?

1970 was the world conservation (自然保护) year. The United Nations wanted everyone to know that the world is in danger. They hoped that governments would go into action (行动) quickly in order to conserve nature. Here is one example of the problems. At one time there were 1,300 different plants, trees and flowers in Holland, but now only 860 remain. The others have been destroyed by modern man and his technology. We are changing the earth, the air and the water, and everything that grows and lives. We can’t live without these plants. If we continue like this,we will destroy ourselves.
What will happen in the future?Perhaps it is more important to ask “What must we do now?” The people who will be living in the world of tomorrow are the young of today.A lot of them know that conservation is necessary. Many are helping to save our world. They plant trees, build bridges across rivers in forests, and soon.In a small town in the United States a large group of girls cleaned the banks of 11 kilometres of their river.Young people may hear about conversation through a record called “No one’s going to change our world”.It was made by the Beatles,Cliff Richard and other singers. The money from it will help to conserve wild animals.

“Wild animals seem to have escaped the Indian Ocean tsunami (海啸),adding weight to the notion they possess a ‘sixth sense’ for disasters,” experts said.
Sri Lankan wildlife officials have said the giant waves that killed hundreds of thousands of people along the coast of Indian Ocean island seemingly missed the wild beasts, with no dead animals found.
“No elephants are dead, not even a dead hare or rabbit.I think animals can sense disasters. They have a sixth sense. They know when things are happening,” H.D.Ratnayake,deputy director of Sri Lanka’s Wildlife Department, said.
The waves washed floodwaters up to 3 km (about 2 miles) inland at Yala National Park in the southeast,Sri Lanka’s biggest wildlife reserve and home to hundreds of wild elephants.“There has been a lot of evidence about dogs barking or birds migrating before volcanic eruptions or earthquakes. But it has not been proven,” said Matthew van Lierop,an animal behaviour specialist at Johannesburg Zoo.
“There have been no specific studies because you can’t really test it in a lab or field setting,” he said.
Other authorities agreed with this judgment.
“Wildlife seem to be able to pick up certain phenomenon, especially birds. There are many reports of birds detecting coming disasters,” said Clive Walker, who has written several books on African wildlife.
Animals certainly rely on the known senses such as smell or hearing to avoid danger such as predators
The notion of an animal “sixth sense” is a lasting one that the evidence on Sri Lanka’s damaged coast is likely to add.
The Romans saw owls as omens of coming disasters and many ancient cultures viewed elephants as sacred (神圣的) animals endowed with special powers.
29.It can be inferred from the first paragraph that .?
A.after the Indian Ocean tsunami scientists are sure of an animal “sixth sense”
B.before the Indian Ocean tsunami scientists didn’t believe in an animal “sixth sense”
C.before the Indian Ocean tsunami scientists had some idea of an animal “sixth sense”

30.The author quoted Clive Walker’s words to .?
A.throw doubt on an animal “sixth sense”
B.show the different opinions between Sri Lankan wildlife officials and the authorities
C.show that authorities know better than animal behaviour specialists
D.add proof to an animal “sixth sense”
31.Which of the following does not belong to an animal “sixth sense”?
A.Elephants avoiding the coming Indian Ocean tsunami.
B.Dogs barking or birds migrating before volcanic eruptions or earthquakes.
C.Birds detecting coming disasters.
D.Animals relying on the known senses such as smell or hearing to avoid danger.
答案:D

Cell phones with cameras are really a popular way to capture(捕捉) a moment in time, but some “clever” students found another use—capturing tests as a way to cheat.
The Magnolia Independent School District in Montgomery County has added camera phones to a list of electronic devices(器具) students are banned from having at school.School officials said the move was made as a preventative(预防的) measure to stop potential(潜在的) test cheaters, since students could use the phones to snap(拍照) pictures of test questions.Another concern was that students might take inappropriate(不合适的) pictures of classmates to later share or post on a website.Cell phones without cameras are allowed on campus, but must be turned off.Camera cell phones will be taken away from students if found on campus, and disciplinary action will be taken, officials said.
Some students were unhappy to hear about the ban.“I’d be lost without my phone,” said Kendall Paul,a Magnolia High School student.“All my numbers are in it.I’ve never used it to cheat and I don’t know anyone who has at our school,so I think it’s kind of stupid.” But other students said they saw it all the time at their school.
“You would take a picture of the test and then send it to the next person taking the test,” said Melissa Sparks,a student.
“They would send the question and the answer,or just the number of the question and the answer. It’s quicker that way,” another student said.
Parents often provide their children with cell phones for use in emergencies(紧急情况)and to keep in better touch with them.“My Mom wants me to have my phone with me all the time for emergency purpose. So,it goes with me wherever I go,” Paul said.
33.Which of the following can probably replace the word “banned” in the second paragraph?
A.cheated. B.Allowed.
C.Ordered. D.Kept.

根据画线词所在句子的下一句中的as a preventative measure to stop potential test cheaters可推知,ban的含义是“禁止”,故选D项。

B.The writer thinks that the ban is right.
C.The writer thinks schools shouldn’t invade(侵犯) students’ rights.
D.The writer’s opinion is not mentioned in the passage.
答案:D

Animals in Danger
As we know,a lot of animals are in danger now.Air and water are being polluted so that the environment in which animals live are destroyed.Besides, many trees are being cut down, making many animals lose their homes. What’s worse, many animals are over hunted for money and are being killed so that some of them are in danger of dying out.?
