This game is usually about spinning a top (陀螺) using a whip (鞭子). It has a long history among almost all the different groups of people but especially for children. In 1926, a top was discovered proving that the game existed (存在) over 4,000 years ago. A whip is used to spin the top. A top can be made of stone, wood or bamboo.
While the tops used by children are small and often colorful, those used in competitions are quite different. The top for formal games usually weighs around 0.45 kilogram and the whip is at least 2 meters long. As you can guess, it is difficult to handle (操纵) them.
Top spinning was once a worldwide popular street game for children. The rope of the whip is wound (缠绕) around the top that is put on the ground of a smooth surface which may even be ice. The whip is pulled back causing the top to spin. It is kept spinning and momentum (冲力) increases with the help of the whip.
In China this simple pastime (休闲活动) has been developed into a competitive petition rules are different in many ways. In one, often called a “battling tops (斗陀螺)”, two players cause their tops to hit each other in an effort to make the opponent’s top fall—the one that stays spinning is the winner. Another is to get the top to spin over obstacles (障碍物), a game requiring great skill and attention; again the winner is the player whose

Papermaking is widely known as one of the four great inventions of ancient Chinese civilization. Among different kinds of papers, Xuan paper, also known as rice paper, holds an important place. Many ancient documents and artworks might not have existed till today if not for the paper.
Xuan paper has always been valued by every Chinese generation as a source of pride since it is not only a necessary part of Chinese culture, but also a witness (见证) to Chinese history for thousands of years.
As one of the most important carriers of Chinese culture, Xuan paper has got the title “King of All Paper”. A large number of great works by ancient Chinese calligraphers (书法家) and painters were drawn on Xuan paper. “Five Oxen” by the painter Han Huang is the oldest Chinese painting on Xuan paper. The art piece, passed down by several emperors and officials in ancient China, is more than 1, 200 years old.
According to the National Library of China, there are about 30 million ancient paper books in the library, and most of them were made by Xuan paper.
So why did Xuan paper become such a hit with literati (文人学士) and artists The answer might lie in its origin (起源). An often-told story about the origin of Xuan paper says that Kong Dan, a papermaking craftsman during the Eastern Han Dynasty, searched for a kind of paper that would not discolor or grow mold (发霉) to keep the picture of his teacher Cai Lun, the inventor of papermaking, and eventually created Xuan paper.
With a smooth surface, pure texture and high Tensile (拉力的) strength, Xuan paper can be kept for a long time. If it is preserved well, its longevity can reach more than 2,000 years while ink and color on it remain fresh and bright. The paper, therefore, is entitled “Paper of Ages”.
