一、阅读理解(本大题共5小题)
Plan a Trip to Bali!
If you are looking for a dream holiday destination, then Bali meets most people’s expectations. The travel information below will help you plan your dream trip to Bali.Best Times to Visit Bali
The wet season (off-season): November to March of the following year is the rainy season. Although there is much rainfall, most activities can be carried out except for the volcano hiking. As most of these five months are the off-season for tourism, flight and hotel prices are low, and tour products and activities are cheap.
The dry season (high-season): April to October, with less rainfall, is the best season for surfing, diving, mountain hiking and bike riding. During this period, there are many local festivals, so it’s a good time to enjoy cultural activities. For example, the Bali Art Festival, held from mid-June to mid-July, is very attractive to visitors. July and August are the busiest times in Bali. So, if you don’t want to join the crowds, just avoid these two months.
During the Christmas and New Year holidays and Chinese New Year, the number of visitors rises sharply. Hotel rooms are easily fully-booked in these two periods, and bookings need to be made 1 — 3 months before your trip to Bali.Best Places to Visit in Bali
With over 5,000 square kilometers, there are many places you can visit in Bali. In general, tourism in Bali can be divided into three parts: northern/ eastern, central and southern.
●The northern and eastern parts are good for mountain climbing, hiking, volcano adventures and diving.
●Central Bali is well known for its village scenery, terraced rice fields (梯田), arts and cultural towns.
●Southern Bali has the best places for beach time, sunbathing, surfing and various watersports.

Before coming to La Salle High School, Amelia Amand attended St. Agatha School in Portland, Oregon. “I decided to come to La Salle as a senior one student because the school has a good volleyball program I really love,” she said.
Volleyball is a big part of Amand’s life. She has been playing volleyball since the third grade. Amand now plays for La Salle’s school volleyball team. “I enjoy it because it’s a good way to reduce (减少) worry,” she said.
Volleyball takes up a lot of Amand’s free time outside of the classroom, and balancing (平衡) schoolwork with sports can be a challenge. “It can be arduous. You’ve just got to keep concentrated(专注),” she said.
In the future, Amand has a big goal. “I’d love to go into the medical field,” she said, explaining that this is something she has always wanted to do.
Here at La Salle, Amand wishes to be proud of her work. Two of her favorite classes are Honors English Ⅱ and Honors Chemistry. They are taught by Mr. Greg Larson and Mr. Matthew Owen. Amand explained that this was mainly because she can receive excellent instructions in the classes. However, she said that Honors Chemistry is one of her most difficult courses this year.
Outside of school, Amand enjoys hanging out with her friends and talking to them. She also likes spending time with her family. “They’re really supportive of everything, which is great,” Amand said. One of her favorite places to visit with them is Michigan. “I love traveling to Michigan because my family lives there, so it’s really nice to see everyone,” she said. Her suggestions for new students are “to get along well with your teachers and to do all your work on time”.
4.What played an important role in making Amand come to La Salle

Most of us know that eating too much sugar isn’t good for us. Because of a close connection between its consumption and health dangers like obesity, fatty liver disease, type 2diabetes, heart disease and cancer, sugar is high on the lists of bad habits worth giving up.
It turns out that reducing sugar intake (摄入) not only helps you avoid the harm of overconsumption, it can also bring surprising results you won’t have to wait long to benefit from. “These include improved mood, skin health, dental hygiene, cognitive function, and even athletic performance,” says Amy Goodson, a nutritionist and registered dietitian.
The first thing to understand is that not all sugar is bad for you because there’s a big difference between natural sugars and added sugars.
Natural sugars like glucose in bread, fructose in fruit and many vegetables, and lactose in milk are natural. They not only provide energy but also offer sweetness to encourage us to eat the foods that contain something important for our health.
Added sugars are what are introduced to foods or drinks during processing, cooking, or at the table. There are more than 260 names for various added sugars, which are added, most commonly, to sweeten or improve the taste of often unhealthy and over-processed foods. Worse, foods with added sugars don’t provide meaningful amounts of nutrition.
The harm connected with eating or drinking too many added sugars is big and includes an increased risk of developing autoimmune disorders such as Crohn’s disease and higher blood pressure, and increased risk of different cancers. A 2023 BMC Medicine study also shows that even a five percent increase in added sugars comes with a six percent higher risk of heart disease and a ten percent higher risk of stroke.
“Such harm occurs in part, because any consumed sugar that isn’t used for energy is stored as fat, which results in increased weight gain, leading to diabetes, obesity, and related bad results,” says Elaine Hon, a clinical dietician and education specialist at Stanford Health Care.
8.What is paragraph 2 mainly about
A.Results of overconsumption. B.Possible sugar-connected problems.
C.Benefits of eating less sugar. D.Tips on how to reduce sugar intake.
9.What does the text say about natural sugars
A.They help us eat more healthy foods. B.They should be consumed properly.
C.They provide little energy for bodies. D.They are always in processed foods.
10.What do the numbers in paragraph 6 show
A.Giving up sugar is a must. B.Added sugars are harmful.
C.A balanced diet is important. D.The 2023 study is unbelievable.
11.What does Elaine Hon try to do in the last paragraph
A.Call for an action. B.Raise some questions.
C.Give an explanation. D.Offer practical advice.
In the rich countries of the West, the electric vehicle revolution is well underway. Climate-conscious consumers drive Teslas or Polestars for reasons of morality and fashion. Poorer countries are also experiencing a wave of electrified trend. In Bangladesh, electric three-wheeler taxis, known as tuk-tuks, are rapidly replacing gas-powered ones on the streets. Such electric vehicles are climate friendly, cost-effective, and help reduce air pollution.
Yet a glance under the hood (引擎盖) of these vehicles reveals a poisonous secret: each tuk-tuk runs on five massive lead-acid batteries (铅酸电池), containing almost 300 pounds of lead in total. Every year and a half or so, when those batteries need to be replaced and recycled, about 60 pounds of lead leak into the environment. Battery recycling, often at small-scale unregulated factories, is a highly profitable but deadly business.
Lead is dangerous, and any exposure to it is harmful to human health. Lead that has entered the environment hurts people on an extraordinary scale. The numerous ways lead enters air, water, soil, and homes across the developing world — and the enormous damage it does to human health, wealth, and welfare — causes one of the biggest environmental crises in the world yet receives little attention.
The World Bank estimates that lead kills 5.5 million people per year, which would make it a bigger global killer than AIDS, malaria, diabetes, and road traffic deaths combined. On top of the shocking deaths, the social burden of lead poisoning is extraordinary, as is its contribution to global inequality — our research on the cognitive (认知的) effects of lead poisoning suggests that it may explain about one-fifth of the educational achievement gap between rich and poor countries.
But unlike many challenges faced by developing countries, lead poisoning is a problem that is fixable with some attention and a relatively modest financial investment. Better monitoring, research, and rules can help protect children all over the world from the dreadful effects of lead poisoning and reduce the massive global costs it brings.
12.How does the author describe the lead problem in paragraph 2
A.By making a comparison. B.By analyzing hidden causes.
C.By listing convincing numbers. D.By explaining its working principle.
13.What can we learn from the text
A.Lead enters rich countries in various ways.
B.Lead poisoning may make poor societies poorer.
C.Exposure to lead doesn’t necessarily harm someone.
D.Lead leaking has caused great fear in rich and poor countries.
14.What can be done to solve lead poisoning in developing countries
A.Fixing these used batteries. B.Putting certain effort and money.
C.Prohibiting the illegal use of lead. D.Reducing the cost of recycling lead.
15.What’s the text mainly about
A.The global lead poisoning crisis. B.The ways to solve lead problems.
C.The outcomes of using electric vehicles. D.The impacts of lead poisoning on human health.
How to Speak in Public
Many people have a fear of public speaking. They worry that they will lose their words, bore the audience or somehow make a fool of themselves. It is easy to try to avoid public speaking, but that usually doesn't work out. Everyone has to speak publicly at some point in their life. You may give a speech in a class or a meeting. Maybe you'll have to give a speech for some honor you've received. 16
Relax. 17 Your audience don't expect you to be perfect. They want you to succeed just as much as you do. If you're thinking you'll forget everything, remind yourself that you are prepared and knowledgeable. Imagine yourself doing well.
Be yourself. You are not Jack Canfield or Tony Robbins. Share your true personality with your audience, and they'll find you reliable. 18
Know your topic. Try to speak about the subject you know well. Research the topic to make sure that you are correct. Public speaking is easier when you don't feel like a fraud(骗子).
19 Choose your message for the group you are speaking to carefully. If you' re giving a public speech, then rude jokes certainly won't be suitable.
Give value. Base your speech on 2 or 3 main points. 20 They'll be satisfied if they leave with something they can use, and that is what public speaking is all about.
A.Know your audience.
B.Choose some serious messages.
C.Don't force yourself to be perfect.
D.Don't focus your attention on too many points.
E.Pretend to be someone that you're not, and they'll discover it.
F.Your audience will not remember every little detail you tell them.
G.Follow these steps to satisfy your audience and overcome your fear of speaking publicly.

One day, Jack came home from school with a flyer (传单) in his hand. His eyes were bright with excitement as he showed it to his father. “Dad, there’s a school talent show next month, and I want to enter. I’ve been learning guitar for months,” Jack said to his father.
His father looked up from the engine he was working on. “You play the guitar ” he asked in surprise. Feeling a little embarrassed, Jack nodded, saying, “Yeah, I’ve been taking lessons. I think I’m ready.” His father cleaned his hands with a piece of cloth, looked at Jack and smiled, “I’ll be there, son. I wouldn’t miss it.” Through his father’s eyes, Jack knew he had his father’s support.
The days leading up to the talent show were more practice and anxiety for Jack. He would come home after school and lock himself in his room, the sound of his guitar echoing (回响) through the house. His father didn’t speak too much, but he would prepare delicious food and smiled at Jack whenever he saw his son. He would also quietly listen to the music from the living room. Although Jack felt tired or nervous sometimes, he felt pushed forward by unspoken love.

47.【答案】As Jack stepped onto the stage, the lights dimmed (变暗) and the audience quieted down. Jack took a deep breath, trying to calm his nerves. He looked out at the sea of faces, his eyes landing on his father. With a final adjustment of his guitar, he began to play. His fingers danced across the strings, and the music filled the hall. At first, there was a slight tremble in his playing, but as he got lost in the melody, his confidence grew. The audience sat spellbound, and by the end of the performance, the hall erupted into thunderous applause. Jack felt a huge sense of relief and pride wash over him.
“I didn’t know you could play like that,” his father said. “You were great.” A big smile spread across Jack’s face. “Thanks, Dad. I couldn’t have done it without your support.” His father put his arm around Jack’s shoulders. “I always knew you had it in you, son. I’m so proud of you.” Jack realized that his father’s quiet presence and unspoken love had been the driving force behind his success. From that day on, their unspoken bond grew even stronger, and Jack knew that no matter what challenges lay ahead, his father would always be there, silently cheering him on.
