Martin Luther King (January 15, 1929 – April 4, 1968) was a famous leader of the civil rights movement(民权运动) in the United States. During the 1950s and 1960s, he did a great deal of work to improve the social rights (权力) and status(地位) of black people in the United States.
In 1963, King gave his most famous speech, “I Have a Dream.” In this speech, he shared his hope that one day, all people would be treated equally(平等地), no matter the color of their skin(皮肤). In 1964, he won the Nobel Peace Prize(诺贝尔和平奖). In April 1968, he was shot and killed by James Ray in Memphis. To remember him, Americans have Martin Luther King Day on the third day of January.

On September 11, 2001, the United States faced one of the most terrible(可怕的) events in its history. That morning, 19 terrorists took control(控制) of four passenger planes. The first plane crashed into(撞上) the North Tower of the World Trade Center in New York City at 8:46 a.m. Soon after, at 9:03 a.m., the second plane hit the South Tower. The the 110-story twin towers burned with big fires. At 9:37 a.m., another plane crashed into the Pentagon(五角大楼), an important building for the U.S. military in Washington D.C. The fourth plane, because the passengers fought back against the terrorists, crashed into a field in Pennsylvania. About 3,000 people lost their lives. It was a big shock to thousands of families.
