①Imagine this: one person tells a lie confidently, while another says something true in a hesitant voice. Which person would you trust
②According to British scientist Dean Burnett, humans are far more likely to believe information sent confidently by a confident person or in some other ways using confident language.
③“Humans trusting confident people over those who are more uncertain is an established phenomenon(已知现象),” wrote Burnett for Science Focus magazine. “When two people are trying to make a decision but each person says different things, confidently expressed arguments are seen as sending better information, which decides the decision.”
④Why is this the case As Burnett said, humans are social animals. In our ancient past, most of our information about the world came from our tribe(部落),in other words, the people around us. So, if ancient humans heard someone confidently saying: “There's a tiger coming,” believing what that person said could save our lives.
⑤On a more personal level, we use our own experiences to understand what other people do and say. That's how our brain works. When we are confident,it's for good reason. Therefore, we believe that when someone else is being confident, they must have good reason, too.
⑥However,we need to realize that confidently delivered information may be more persuasive(有说服力的), but that doesn't mean it's correct. As Burnett wrote, we are living in a more and more complex(复杂的)world. Trusting very confident people without checking the facts can lead to bad results.
( )24.Which can best explain the underlined word “hesitant”in Paragraph 1
hesitant ['hezitnt] adj. To express something in a way that is not clear. To feel sure about your own ability to do things. To speak or act slowly because you feel uncertain. To show a lot of excitement and interest about something.
( )25.What does the example in Paragraph 4 want to show
A.Confident words can raise the unity of a tribe.
B.Being social led humans to trust confident voices.
C.A confident person is usually the leader of a group.
D.A confident person is brave enough to fight against animals.
( )26.Personally,why do we trust confident people
A.Because confident people express themselves better.
B.Because believing confident people raises our confidence.
C.Because we think confident people usually look experienced.
D.Because we think confident people usually do things for good reasons.
( )27.What is Burnett's worry
A.Being confident is not a good thing.
B.The persuasive information is more complex.
C.People are too quick to believe what others say.
D.Information delivered confidently can be misleading.

Artificial intelligence(AI) can now do amazing things. ChatGPT is an AI that can answer questions, tell stories, and do much more. But it's very “thirsty”, said a new study.
When ChatGPT works, its “home”---data(数据) centers around the world---gets very hot.Workers then have to use water to cool them down.Cold water goes into pipes(管道) near the computers at these centers. Because the computers are very hot,the water turns into vapor(水蒸气)and goes into the air. The water needs to be super clean. If they use seawater, it can eat away the pipes.
If you ask ChatGPT 20 to 50 questions,it needs to “drink” a 500-milliliter bottle of water. When people trained ChatGPT, it used 700,000 liters of water, said the study. This is the amount that is needed to make about 370 cars.
ChatGPT is not the only one that needs data centers. Everything you do with computers needs data centers to work. There are more than 8,000 data centers in the world. The number is still growing. If AI keeps using a lot of water, we may have to “fight” with Al for water.
AI uses a lot of water to “grow”. Many people may not have enough water to drink because of water shortage. However, we need better AI to have better future. Should we rethink the use of AI
( )28.What is the meaning of “thirsty”in this article
A. ChatGPT can answer many questions at the same time.
B.ChatGPT needs some water while working.
C.ChatGPT keeps learning to answer many questions.
D.ChatGPT works just like drinking water.
( )29. Why can't people use seawater to cool down data centers
A.Because seawater is too clean to cool down the centers
B.Because it is hard for seawater to become vapor.
C.Because seawater is bad for the pipes.
D.Because animals in seawater may eat the pipes.
( )30.How does the writer show the idea in Paragraph3
a.By comparing one thing with another.
b.By thinking of a thing as a person.
c.By deducing(推断)from the information.
d.By giving examples to make the point clear.
A.abc B.abd C.acd D.bcd
( )31.What can we learn from the last paragraph
A.There may be a competition for water use between AI and humans.
B.AI may fight against humans to get more water in the future.
C.AI will use less water some day to let people have enough.
D.People should stop using the data centers in order to save water.

On a cold night in New York, a policeman was on duty. He walked along a quiet street and checked the shops that had closed for the night. Then he came upon a man outside a store. Before he could say a word, the man started talking.
“It’s all right, officer,” the man said. “I’m just waiting for a friend. We made a date to meet here. ” He explained that he and his friend had eaten dinner at this shop exactly 20 years ago. Back then, it was a restaurant. The policeman replied that “Big Joe” Brady’s restaurant had closed down five years ago.
Then, the man lit his cigar (雪茄). From the light, the officer could see the man better. He had a little white scar (疤) near his right eye. He was also well - dressed, with a large jewel in his necktie.
The man went on to talk about his good friend Jimmy and how they were like brothers. The day after their dinner, the man had gone west to become rich, but Jimmy had stayed behind in New York. They hadn’t seen each other since then, but had agreed to meet at the same restaurant on this very night.
“I’ll be on my way,” the policeman said. “Hope your friend comes around all right.” He then continued walking down the street.
20 minutes later, another man showed up. “Is that you, Bob ” the man asked. “Is that you, Jimmy ” Bob responded. Bob was happy to be looking at his old friend again. However, he couldn’t help but notice that Jimmy seemed much taller. “I grew a bit after I was 20,” Jimmy said. “Hey, I know a place. It’s not far from here, and we can talk there.” Bob agreed, and they started walking.
When they stepped under the light of a shop, the two men turned to look at each other. Bob stopped suddenly and cried, “You can’t be Jimmy! Twenty years is a long time, but not long enough to change the size of a man’s nose. ”
“It sometimes changes a good man into a bad one, ” said the tall man. “You have been under arrest (被捕) for the last ten minutes, Bob. Also, here’s a note from Officer Jimmy. ” Bob unfolded the piece of paper handed to him.

VI. Reading Expression ( 5小题,每小题2分,共10分)
Is reading better than watching TV I believe it is. Reading might be better than many other activities if you want to educate yourself and improve your chances of succeeding in your work.
If you’re serious about creating the habit of reading, what’s important is finding a time you can read every day—often that’s early morning or late at night, or both. For others, it might be during their lunch break. You only need to read for 10 to 20 minutes a day to form (形成) the habit.
Then, you need to find a place that’s comfortable. Make sure it has good lighting, the temperature is nice and you’re in a good chair. Or you can find some place that you can relax in without falling asleep, although there’s nothing wrong with sleep.
Next, be sure to shut off the TV, Internet, cell phone, radio, or other music. Let reading be a quiet time. Mark an “x” on your calendar every day you read, and try to keep your unbroken “x”es going as long as possible. A habit is much easier to get into if it’s something you enjoy, not something you are made to do. So make the time you spend reading a joy. I’ve been a lifelong reader, so the pleasure of a good book is one of my favorite things in the world. I love to lose myself in the world of a book.

例文
My favourite motto is Where there is a will, there is a way.
I think that one of the most important things to success is a firm resolution. If a man doesn’t have a strong will to win the final victory, he will never succeed in his life. Whenever I see this motto, I think of many memories of my English study. When I entered the middle school, I had so many difficulties with my English. I was not able to understand the teacher in class, and I couldn’t master the words and phrases. For a time I wanted to give up. Later, I made a resolution to improve my English. I listened to the teacher carefully in class, kept on reading English every day and spoke as much as possible. Step by step I made great progress in English.
From this thing, I really understand this motto. There is nothing difficult in the world. If you make up your mind to do it, you will certainly accomplish your end. So I will never give up easily.
