As long as I can remember having a phone in my hand, I’ve been a terrible replier. When a new group chat is created, the members will come to laugh at my inability to respond to a simple question in a matter of hours.
I’m not a horrible replier in all aspects of my life. In fact, I pride myself on my swift response time when it comes to work emails, my manager and my mum. “Call me instead,” I tell my friends. “I’m a much better caller.” They know if it’s urgent and they need me, I’ll pick up and always be there. But if I read a message and I categorize it as non-urgent, then it’s a different story.
When it comes to the group chats, the conversations move so rapidly that if I’m not present for five minutes, I’ve suddenly missed 67 messages concerning daily matters. By the time I’ve responded to their messages, many have already messaged back, and then I mentally file their non-urgent messages away in the non-urgent cabinet (柜) again, and thus the problematic cycle continues — the unavoidable iMessage quicksand (流沙).
I want to stress I do love my friends and I am grateful to be included in all of the group chats. I simply find it a headache to keep up with the never-ending stream of messages that we’re flooded with throughout the day. In these moments, my friend’s messages go unanswered and I sometimes feel like throwing my phone into a lake, lying on the floor and staring at a wall.
Alas, I recently asked my friend Tully how she felt about my texting habits. She’s the friend you can always rely on to give you the non-sugar-coated truth. “You take three to five business days to respond if we’re lucky,” she tells me. Ouch, but probably not wrong. “To be fair,” she adds, “when we do eventually get an answer out of you — you are always down for the plans, you always show up when we need you, you never cancel and you’re usually the one driving 40 minutes across town to see us southside so… we can handle the group chat silence in return for that kind of friendship.”

Sadfishing, which researchers defined in the Journal of American College Health in 2021, refers to the trend of exaggerating personal struggles online to generate sympathy. It could be in the form of a sad photo, an ominous quote, or a post with a foggy meaning.
Journalist Rebecca Reid coined the term in 2019 after a questionable Instagram post by Kendall Jenner. In the post, Jenner described a “painful struggle” with acne and received a large amount of sympathetic responses from her followers. However, it was later revealed that her post was just a complicated marketing plot for her skincare partnership with Proactiv, and Reid labeled her behavior as sadfishing.
Experts say sadfishing is likely due to the fact that a child or teen is struggling with something and wants to let others know. In these cases, they often don’t feel they have a person they feel comfortable with to share their struggles with. So they turn to the social media world. A 2023 study found that teens who participated in sadfishing exhibited signs of anxiety and depression, while low social support was a large contributing factor. Researchers also found that boys reported “higher sadfishing tendencies” than girls at age 12, but the trend decreased as they got older. For girls, the trend increased with age.
Researchers found that, in most cases, responses to sadfishing posts were positive and helpful. But in some cases, there were negative responses which could lead to increased stress or anxiety. “When a social media post is unsuccessful in seeking sympathetic responses, it can also cause the person posting it to be mocked,” Dr. Nissim-Matheis warns. “Especially if the post is authentic.” And while any response is supportive for a child/ teen who feels unseen and unheard, it may open them up to privacy violations and violent behavior.

In many regions of the world, windows can be a mixed blessing. On the one hand, windows brighten a room, and give occupants a view of the world beyond, and on the other band, they also let in a huge amount of heat from the sun.
In fact, 87 percent of heat gain in a given space comes through its windows. This is because UV radiation (紫外辐射) passes through glass easily. To keep out the heat, people use window coverings like blinds, but that also blocks the view.
A recent study from the University of Notre Dame indicates that soon people who love a view but hate the heat will be able to have it both ways. Though not yet scaled up (扩大生产) to market, the study presents a new window coating that could let in sunlight and keep out the heat.
Window films and heat-blocking coatings are not a new concept. In fact, the authors of the study themselves pioneered an innovative glass coating in 2020. So what is so exciting about their new 2024 coating It’s all about the angles.
Tengfei Luo, lead author of the study told Notre Dame News, “The angle between the sunshine and your window is always changing. Our coating maintains functionality and efficiency whatever the sun's position in the sky.” In order to figure out the way to create a better window coating, the researchers used a quantum (量子) computing assisted AI machine-learning model, which helped to find out the correct combination of elements they would need to create an effective coating.
Using the information, the researchers designed a coating that could selectively transmit and reflect light over a wide range of angles. That is to say, it can keep a room cool at any given hour of the day, regardless of the angle that the sunlight is hitting the window.
There are endless numbers of practical applications for this new window coating, from commercial use to residential use, and even for use in the automotive industry.
