While famous foreign architects are invited to lead the designs of landmark buildings in China such as the new CCTV tower and the National Center for the Performing Arts, many excellent Chinese architects are making great efforts to take the center stage.
Their efforts have been proven fruitful. Wang Shu, a 49-year-old Chinese architect, won the 2012 Pritzker Architecture Prize — which is often referred to as the Nobel Prize in architecture — on February 28. He is the first Chinese citizen to win this award.
Wang serves as head of the Architecture Department at the China Academy of Art (CAA). His office is located at the Xiangshan campus(校园) of the university in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province. Many buildings on the campus are his original creations.
The style of the campus is quite different from that of most Chinese universities. Many visitors were amazed by the complex architectural space and abundant building types. The curves(曲线) of the buildings perfectly match the rise and fall of hills, forming a unique view.
Wang collected more than 7 million abandoned bricks of different ages. He asked the workers to use traditional techniques to make the bricks into walls, roofs and corridors. This creation attracted a lot of attention thanks to its mixture of modern and traditional Chinese elements(元素).
Wang’s works show a deep understanding of modern architecture and a good knowledge of traditions. Through such a balance, he had created a new type of Chinese architecture, said Tadao Ando, the winner of the 1995 Pritzker Prize.
Wang believes traditions should not be sealed in glass boxes at museums. “That is only evidence that traditions once existed,” he said.
“Many Chinese people have a misunderstanding of traditions. They think tradition means old things from the past. In fact, tradition also refers to the things that have been developing and that are still being created, ” he said.
“Today, many Chinese people are learning Western styles and theories rather than focusing on Chinese traditions. Many people tend to talk about traditions without knowing what they really are, ” said Wang.
“The study of traditions should be combined with practice. Otherwise, the recreation of traditions would be artificial and empty, ” he said.
24. Wang’s winning of the prize means that Chinese architects are ___________.
A. following the latest world trend B. getting international recognition
C. working harder than ever before D. relying on foreign architects
25. What impressed visitors to the CAA Xiangshan campus most
A. Its hilly environment. B. Its large size.
C. Its unique style. D. Its diverse functions.
26. What made Wang’s architectural design a success
A. The mixture of different shapes. B. The balance of East and West.
C. The use of popular techniques. D. The harmony of old and new.
27. What should we do about Chinese traditions according to Wang
A. Spread them to the world. B. Preserve them at museums.
C. Teach them in universities. D. Recreate them in practice.

Living near bars and fast-food restaurants could be harmful to heart health, according to a new research. These kinds of ready-to-eat food environments typically provide unhealthy foods and drinks, and have been related to cardiovascular diseases, such as heart failure, said Lu Qi, a head researcher at Tulane University in New Orleans.
Heart failure is a condition in which the heart can’t get enough blood to meet the body’s needs. This study is likely the first to evaluate (评估) the connection between food environment and heart failure with long-term observation. “Most previous researches on the relation between nutrition (营养) and human health have been focused on food quality, omitting the impact of food environment,” Qi said. “Our present study highlights the importance of accounting for food environment in nutrition researches.”
Researchers evaluated the connection using data from more than 500,000 adults in the United Kingdom. They measured participants’ exposure (接触) to three types of food environments — bars, restaurants and fast-food restaurants. Exposure was determined by proximity (living within 1 kilometer) and density (the number of ready-to-eat food stores within 1 kilometer).
The study documented nearly 13,000 heart failure cases during a 12-year follow-up period and the results showed that participants with 10 or more ready-to-eat stores near their homes had a 16% greater risk of heart failure than those with no ready-to-eat food environments. Those closest to the bars (less than 500 meters) had a 14% higher risk than those who lived the farthest away (more than 3,000 meters).
The researchers noted the findings suggested that creating healthier food environments and improving physical fitness facilities, along with helping more people receive higher levels of education, could reduce the increased risk of heart failure linked to quick-meal options.
Overall, the study stresses the importance of improving food environments to prevent heart failure, and the researchers note that more studies are needed, particularly evaluating nutrition unsafety, to make sure of the applicability of this study’s results.

The concentric circles (同心圆状斑点), also known as eyespots on butterfly, not only look like real eyes but may also appear to glare directly at predators (捕食者) from many directions, scientists have found. This visual illusion, called the “Mona Lisa effect”, could scare would-be attackers and buy the insects enough time to escape.
Scientists suspect that eyespots, with dark “pupils (瞳孔)” in the center look like real eyes to predators. Hannah Rowland, an ecologist at the Max Planck Institute, wanted to see if the direction of this fake gaze contributed to the effect.
First, Rowland and her co-author trained chicks to attack a worm hidden behind a paper printout of two eyespots at the end of a path. When the eyespots’ pupils were specifically pointed in the chicks’ direction, the birds repeatedly ran toward the paper and then backed away, and they waited a few minutes before attacking. But when the pupils instead appeared to look away from the direction of the chicks’ approach, the birds attacked in seconds. Centrally located pupils, though not as effective as ones that stared directly at the chicks, resulted in longer delays than pupils that looked the other way.
“This suggests that they are really paying attention to the direction of the pupils in the eyespots and are perceiving them as eyelike stimulation. The concentric eyespots found most often in the insect world may seem to the chicks like a pair of eyes that follow them regardless of approach angle,” says Rowland.
National University of Singapore evolutionary biologist Antonia Monteiro, who was not involved in the research, says the study is a “cool” demonstration of an evolutionary theory for eyespots. “These butterflies can be encountered from all angles, so having the pupil centrally located ends up being pretty good,” Monteiro says. Still, she says, “the eyespots used in the study were several millimeters larger than even the largest commonly found in nature, raising the possibility that the chicks may have been extra frightened by the size of the paper eyes.”
32. What is the function of eyespots on the butterfly
A. Making them look more beautiful. B. Spotting potential dangers.
C. Helping them identify the direction. D. Protecting them from being attacked.
33. How did the chicks react when shown the specifically-pointed eyespots
A. They attacked immediately. B. They turned away in seconds.
C. They reacted cautiously. D. They became very excited.
34. What does Monteiro mean in the last paragraph
A. The eyespot is a butterfly’s powerful weapon.
B. The experiment needs further proof.
C. The study first proposes an evolutionary theory of eyespots.
D. Butterflies in nature have small eyespots.
35. What’s the purpose of the text
A. To appeal to readers to preserve butterflies.
B. To uncover the hidden biological secret of butterflies.
C. To analyze the social behaviour of butterflies.
D. To demonstrate the evolutionary theory for eyespots.

Here’s why Disney World doesn’t have mosquitoes (蚊子)
There is a lot that goes into making Disney World the “Most Magical Place on Earth”. Considering Walt Disney World is in Central Florida, and has various amusement parks at Walt Disney World, there is one thing missing from the huge property that you may not have even noticed: mosquitoes. 36 .

38 Mosquitoes are attracted to the gas, which is one reason why they are so good at finding humans, as we breathe it out constantly. Once caught, the mosquitoes are then frozen and studied in labs where experts discover the best ways to keep mosquitoes off of our skin when we arrive on-site.
39 Due to the birds’ immunity to mosquito-borne viruses such as West Nile they can be used to observe the presence of the virus without experiencing any harmful symptoms (症状) after that. The chickens are kept in cages, unlike flying birds that would travel long distances. So, if a virus is detected, it is easy for Disney to find out exactly which part of their parks has been affected by viral mosquitoes.
Occasionally, Disney has had to close certain sections of their park during the busiest times. 40 It’s time of year when we can finally get back outdoors in Disney with family and friends without worry.
A.So, how do they manage to do it

When I was young, my father was a secondary school teacher in Edensor, England. As the breadwinner, he was deeply engaged in his school responsibilities during my childhood. Consequently, I often felt distant from him because he had few moments to talk or interact with me. My mother, a full-time housewife, managed the household and took care of my younger bother and me, busting around the kitchen, bedrooms and grocery stores. The back garden of our house was a special place for me; it was not only a secure spot for kids but also my dad’s favorite hobby area. Whenever he was home, he would spend most of his spare time looking after his treasured roses, which my mother also adored.
My father would care for his roses with great devotion and affection. Often, I would watch beside him, curious or eager for his attention, but he was usually preoccupied (全神贯注). He regularly watered the roses, cleaned the leaves, loosened and turned over the soil, and fed them with essential nutrients. His expectation was the joy and sweetness brought by their blossoming.
One day, I saw him cut off some branches and stems. Then, with a sharp knife, he carefully made marks on the main branches. He cut open the marked spots to insert sprouts (嫩枝) into those new cuts and wrapped them with bandages. After all his efforts, he reminded us never to touch them. From then on, whenever my father returned home from work, he would go straight to tend to those plants.
Within a month, we all witnessed the entire process: tender stems grow, form buds, and finally bear blossoms in various colors. The garden soon became a place of immense beauty, filled with rose blossoms and surrounded by their sweet fragrance. My parents truly enjoyed themselves there, and so did my brother Tommy and I. Those roses brought us immense happiness, and no one, especially me, wanted to let go of such beauty.

第二节
One sunny day, I decided to do something as my dad had done to have more roses. Without telling anyone, I took a pair of scissors and began my “gardening project”. I carefully selected a few branches, and with trembling hands, I made the first cut, hoping it would lead to a new rose. I then made clumsy marks on the remaining stems and tried to insert any twigs I could find. The garden soon turned into a chaotic scene, with cut branches and scattered leaves everywhere. I was so absorbed in my work that I failed to notice how much of a mess I had created, thinking I was on my way to making the garden even more beautiful.
Later that day, when my dad saw the great mess I had made, he was totally shocked. He froze in his tracks and his eyes widened in disbelief as he stared at the damaged roses. At first, I was terrified, fearing his anger. But instead of scolding, he gently asked why I did this. I tearfully told him I wanted more roses like he did. He took a deep breath, his initial shock giving way to a gentle smile. Kneeling beside me, he placed a hand on my shoulder and said, “Let me show you how it’s really done.” From that day on, he spent more time teaching me about gardening, and our relationship bloomed like those beautiful roses in the garden.
