Back in 1958, I was crazy about the Norfolk and Western 746. The smooth bullet-nose engine with its orange and yellow lines and shiny streamlined black tender (车厢) seemed to have cast a spell on me.
Together the engine and tender measured a little shy of 2 feet — enormous by the toy train standards of the day. Even better, the 746 had a working headlight and smoker, and its tender sang high.
Unfortunately, the amazing 746 also had an amazing price — $50, equal to about $450 today. That was far more than my grandfather could afford. Instead, I had to be content with his little Lionel plastic, which was SIX INCHES shorter than the 746 and had no headlight, no smoker or no sound! But that was the best that my grandfather could give me at that time.
Years passed, and I was in my 30s. Superior sound systems and computer controls dominated toy trains. I never gave a look. My interest in toy trains, I firmly believed, had faded, so did my admiration for the 746, since my grandfather was not with me. The 746 was never called to mind. On an ordinary day, however, I happened to see the 746 outside the window of a train show. Just one-look, I could not look away. Childhood memories that I tried to hide in the depths of my heart raced through my mind, happy or sad.
That day I took the 746 home and placed it in the center of the room, and let my childhood dream sing its way around me. Smoke rose out from the engine and the soft song sounded from its tender. It seemed as if I could see the soft light in grandfather's eyes and hear his cheerful laughter.
4.Which best describes the 746 in the author’s eyes
A.Its beauty had a special appeal. B.It was the largest train in 1958.
C.Its price rocketed from $50 to $450. D.Its measurement was at a disadvantage.
5.How did the author feel when receiving his little Lionel plastic
A.Visibly relieved. B.Terribly ashamed.
C.Really delighted. D.Slightly discontented.
6.What happened to the author in his 30s
A.He left his grandfather alone. B.He didn’t favor the 746 at all.
C.He admired advanced toy trains. D.He attempted not to recall the past.
7.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A.Toy Trains: Childhood in History B.The 746: Childhood Memories of Love
C.Toy Trains: Memories of A Generation D.The 746: A Perfect Gift from My Grandfather
Maths anxiety is older than you might think. A hundred years ago, German physicist Felix Auerbach, concerned about the situation and hoping to find ways to deal with it, wrote a little book called The Fear of Mathematics and How to Overcome It. For a mathematician like myself, the pleasure of reading his book is followed by a sigh of regret that the topic is as important today as it was a century ago.
Why do we fear mathematics At heart, says Auerbach, it comes down to a basic misunderstanding of what maths is. The fear of messing up a calculation (计算) may be real, but the fact that there are many excellent mathematicians who are terrible at calculation proves that maths skills and mathematics aren’t the same thing.
What, then, is mathematics Auerbach says it is three things: a science, a language and an art. For me, part of the problem is that we are often stuck in the “science” box. If we can be shown the beauty of mathematics, we might stop fearing the calculations supporting it. As a language, what sets maths apart is the universality (普遍性) of its truths — you can become fluent wherever you are from. As an art, the beauty of maths lies in the wonderful thinking that allows us to understand the endless, explore the beautiful patterns of art and nature, and delight in the perfection of ideas. Focusing entirely on calculation skills misses the joy and excitement that can come from discovering patterns and understanding them, from seeing the artistic beauty of mathematics.
Some experts like to point out that we experience anxiety the same way we experience excitement. In the same way, fear can be negative or positive. Our goal should be to move people from a narrow view of mathematics as mere calculations to an appreciation of it as a beautiful language and art that inspires amazement.
8.What does the author think of the book by Auerbach according to paragraph 1
A.It overstates the fear of maths.
B.It addresses a common problem.
C.It is too old to be important today.
D.It is popular among mathematicians.
9.What is the reason behind people’s fear of mathematics
A.Inability to do calculations.
B.Lack of support from teachers.
C.Failure to understand its nature.
D.Difficulty of the math language.
10.In what way can we regard mathematics as an art
A.Through focusing on technical skills.
B.Through creating artworks with delight.
C.Through exploring applications in science.
D.Through appreciating its beauty in patterns.
11.What does the passage suggest we do regarding learning maths
A.Express our fear. B.Seek experts’ help.
C.Change our opinion. D.Learn a new language.
You lean back from the dinner table, feeling like you physically couldn’t fit another bite. But then someone offers pie and you just can’t say no. Scientists have now identified the neurons (神经元) behind the “dessert stomach” phenomenon.
In their study, scientists at the Max Planck Institute for Metabolism Research found that mice kept eating sugar even when they should have felt full. Investigations of their brains showed that a group of nerve cells, known as the pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC) neurons, became active. These neurons release a chemical called β-endorphin, which acts like a natural reward and makes the mice feel good. As a result, they keep eating sugar despite feeling full. Interestingly, this effect only happens with sugar, not with other types of food like normal meals or fatty snacks.
In a follow-up experiment with humans, researchers gave volunteers a sugar drink and found that the same thing happens in the brain as with mice. This suggests that the “dessert stomach” is a real thing for both mice and humans.
Why does this happen According to Henning Fenselau, a scientist who led the study, this makes sense from an evolutionary perspective. Sugar is rare in nature but provides quick energy. Our brains are programmed to make us want to eat sugar whenever we find it. This might have been helpful in the past because of food shortage, but today it can lead to overeating and health problems.
The findings could shed light on treating obesity by providing a thorough understanding of the urge for sugar, and could even lead to potential medical solutions. Developing drugs to block the brain’s reward system for sugar might help people control their cravings (渴望). Yet, it is too soon to say that the full picture has been drawn. Other studies have found that signals from your digestive system could influence why there always seems to be room for a dessert.
12.How does the author introduce the topic of the passage
A.By describing an eating behaviour. B.By introducing a scientific study.
C.By defining a certain term. D.By comparing different eating habits.
13.What is the main function of POMC neurons in the mice’s brains
A.Telling the bodies the mice have eaten enough. B.Managing the desire for fatty and salty foods.
C.Creating a reward system to encourage dieting. D.Producing a chemical linked to positive emotions.
14.Why does the author mention that “sugar is rare in nature” in paragraph 4
A.To blame modern food production for health issues.
B.To explain the evolutionary basis of sugar cravings.
C.To compare natural sugar with artificial sugar.
D.To warn people about eating too much sugar.
15.What is suggested in the last paragraph
A.Sugar-blocking drugs should be sold on stores right now.
B.Brain activities alone could determine dessert cravings.
C.More research is needed before the application of the study.
D.Cravings for sugar only occurred in modern times.
Self-disciplined people are not all outstanding people. 16 Some of them read every day. Some of them never run late. The real difference between an elite (杰出的) person and an ordinary person is that an elite person can manage his or her time well. 17
What people call self-discipline is in fact self-management. One example is staying fit. Never underestimate (低估) someone who is in good shape. Anyone who has ever tried to lose weight knows that it’s not easy. 18 . If someone is in good shape, it shows that he knows the principles of staying fit and is able to stick to a plan that uses these principles.
If someone is in good shape, it means that this person is good at managing themselves and their time. 19 It also shows that this person is able to keep persevering (坚持) and can balance long-term goals with short-term goals. So if someone is in good shape, he or she is more than just health.
20 First of all, set a goal and write down your reasons for wanting to achieve it. Create a list of all the things you need to do to achieve this goal and start to work on them one at a time. With self-discipline, small things in life will no longer trouble you. Only through self-discipline can you truly own your future.
A.How do you learn self-management
B.That’s where their success comes from.
C.It’s even harder to avoid putting weight back on.
D.Whether it is natural or acquired, it is a great skill.
E.This skill gives you the power to stick to your decisions.
F.But nearly all outstanding people are self-disciplined people.
G.Self-discipline means self control, which is a sign of inner strength.

It was my brother's idea. Let's get Mom a pet dog for her birthday. It would make her happy. I thought it was a good idea, as Mom had always wanted to own a dog. By the time our conversation ended, I had my task: find our mother a dog.
After a careful search, I finally found an ad for dogs in a local newspaper. A nearby family had a dog who had just given birth to five male puppies(小狗)! All had had their first vaccines(疫苗),and would be ready to leave their mom in a few weeks.I gave them a call.
The man who answered the phone listened patiently to my story and set a date for us to meet the dogs.
When the day arrived, I got into my brother's car. We pulled up in front of some houses that sat along a narrow street. As we stepped onto the sidewalk,we were greeted by noisy barks(吠叫声). Four dogs had positioned themselves on the back of a sofa and were watching us through a large window. We climbed onto the porch(门廊) and rang the doorbell.
A tall man with graying hair and a kind smile opened the door. As I reached to shake his hand, I could see the puppies behind him, running to get to us. Each puppy wore a different color string around his neck.
We met the man's wife, who wore a similar friendly smile and welcomed us to her home. We met the puppies' parents and then set about the business of selecting a friend for our mother. There were four puppies and four visitors; the man handed each of us a dog. Three of the puppies looked up at us with large, curious eyes. The fourth one, who I was holding, began to wiggle excitedly and kiss my face. "Let's take this one! He's the one! Look how lovely he is!" I said. As far as I was concerned, it was a done deal.

46.【答案】Dear Mike,
I really appreciate your effort to organize the reading month. However, requiring all students to finish five assigned classic English books may cause some issues.
Firstly, the books might be too challenging for some students, leading to stress. Secondly, limited time could discourage thorough reading. Could we adjust the plan Maybe reduce the number to 2-3 books and let students choose from a list based on their interests. Alternatively, grouping students to read different books and share summaries could save time while ensuring engagement.
Thanks for considering my suggestions.
Yours,
Li Hua

47.【答案】My brother wasn 't sure and suggested that we take some time to get to know all of them. We spent the next hour sitting on the floor playing with a group of puppies. Finally, we settled on a different puppy for our mom. He was the smallest and weakest of the dogs and made up for his smallness with a large personality. He spent most of the time we were there either jumping on one of us or following his patient mother around asking for more to eat. We signed the paperwork and agreed on the pick-up date.
Two weeks later, we picked up the dog and hid him around the corner in my mom's living room while she opened her birthday gifts. Just when she thought she was done, the small dog walked across the room toward her. It took a moment for Mom to be aware of him, and then she began to cry. She knelt on the floor and pulled the dog into her arms. As she kissed him, she looked up through her tears and said, “This is the best birthday gift I've ever got”. Hearing that, my brother and I looked at each other and smiled.
