Fruit For All
One day in 2020, a high school student named Zach Selby found out a way to help people who need food. The organisations he learned about take extra fruit from fruit trees and give it to local food banks. Selby decided he could start his own group in his neighbourhood. He called the group Fruit For All(FFA). It is a non- profit group that collects extra fruit from homeowners’ trees and donates it to local food banks.
To make FFA successful, Selby needed eager volunteers and trees with fruit. Selby asked community members to call or contact him online and let him know whether they had trees with extra fruit. At first, it was difficult to find people who were willing to contribute the fruit in their trees. But as news of Selby’s idea spread, people contacted him. Soon, FFA was really “growing”!
With the help of his brother Jack and other volunteers, Selby has gathered and donated more than 70,000 pounds of fruit to local food banks. The group usually works on the weekends, and the volunteers travel as far as 20 miles from Selby’s house. The volunteers usually gather about 500 pounds of fruit each weekend. But one weekend they collected over 2,000 pounds of fruit!
FFA also has a website that explains the group’s goal, which is to inspire people to help. Visitors to the website learn three ways they can take part in. They can allow volunteers to pick fruit from their trees. They can volunteer to pick fruit. And they can start an FFA group in their own area. People who are interested can also use the website to ask Selby and Jack questions and post comments.
More volunteers are joining in. Although the contributions might be small, they can make a big difference. With the help from groups like FFA, more people are able to enjoy delicious fruit.

When I was a little girl, I liked drawing, freely and joyously making marks on the walls at home. In primary school, I learned to write using chalks. Writing seemed to be another form of drawing. I shaped individual letters into repeating lines, which were abstract forms, delightful but meaningless patterns.
In secondary school, art was my favourite subject. Since I loved it so much I thought I was good at it. For the art O-level exam I had to present an oil painting. I found it difficult, but still hoped to pass. I failed, with a low grade. I’d been over-confident. Now I’d been declared talentless.
But other channels of creativity stayed open: I went on writing poems and stories. Still, I went to exhibitions often. I continued my habitual drawing, which I now characterised as childish doodling (乱画). In my 30s, I made painter friends and learned new ways of looking at art. However, I couldn’t let myself have a go at actually doing it. Though these new friends were abstract painters using oil paints, or were printmakers or sculptors, I took oil painting as the taboo (禁忌) high form I wasn’t allowed to practice.
One night, in my early 40s, I dreamed that a big woman in red approached me, handed me a bag of paints, and told me to start painting. The dream felt so authoritative that it shook me. It was a form of energy, giving me back something I’d lost. Accordingly, I started by experimenting with water colours. Finally, I bought some oil paints.
Although I have enjoyed breaking my decades-long taboo about working with oil paints, I have discovered I now prefer chalks and ink. I let my line drawings turn into cartoons I send to friends. It all feels free and easy. Un-anxious. This time around, I can accept my limitations but keep going.
Becoming a successful painter calls for being resolute. I realised I was always afraid of wanting too much. That dream reminded me that those fears and desires could encourage me to take risks and make experiments.
28.How did the author feel about the result of the art exam
A.Scared. B.Worried. C.Discouraged. D.Wronged.
29.In her 30s, the author _________.
A.avoided oil painting practice B.sought for a painting career
C.fancied abstract painting D.exhibited child paintings
30.Which word would best describe the author’s dream
A.Confusing. B.Empowering.
C.Disturbing. D.Entertaining.
31.What can we learn from this passage
A.Actions speak louder than words. B.Hard work is the mother of success.
C.Dreams are the reflections of realities. D.Creative activities involve being confident.
第二节(共5小题; 每小题2分, 共10分)
根据短文内容, 从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Being sensitive means that you are observant, careful, and thoughtful. It can also mean you sometimes overinterpret or overreact to perceived criticism or judgment. If you tend to be a highly sensitive person, you are more likely to misread signals from others, sense social threats, and struggle to adapt to new circumstances. 32
The power of insensitivity can be interpreted as “sluggish (迟钝的) power” . 33 For example, those working on complex research projects with “sluggish power” persist with focus and determination in the face of challenges such as tight deadlines and limited resources. Their resilience facilitates effective problem-solving, ensuring the successful completion of tasks despite obstacles.
34 That is one of the important reasons why insensitivity allows a person to better survive and adapt in a competitive environment. Knowing oneself is difficult, but knowing oneself correctly is undoubtedly an excellent ability — a trait shared by many successful people, who all clearly know where their strengths are, what they can do, what they want, and what direction to go.
Practicing insensitivity involves several key strategies. Firstly, be assertive. Express our needs and opinions positively and with confidence. Secondly, adopt a forward-looking mindset. 35 Additionally, detach from external influences. Avoid excessive concern over others’ opinions and speculation on others’ thoughts. Lastly, manage relationships. Recognize our personal responsibilities while respecting others’ boundaries. Don’t interfere with other people’s subjects and don’t let others interfere with ours either.
36 Once you become a bit “blunt” and slow down the pace, you will feel more comfortable.
A.Learn to view the problem as two parts.
B.That’s where the need to be insensitive comes from.
C.I hope everyone can obtain the ability to be insensitive.
D.Behind insensitivity is a strong sense of self-awareness.
E.Being a highly sensitive person can come with many challenges.
F.It implies the ability to calmly face the setbacks and firmly move forward.
G.Focus on long-term goals rather than the ups and downs of life at the moment.
第三部分书面表达(共两节,32分)
第一节阅读表达(共4小题,共12分;第40、41小题,每小题2分;第42题,3分;第43题,5分)
When Eugenie George first heard that her friend passed the accountant exam, her heart sank. She’d failed that test weeks earlier, and needed the certificate to advance her own career. “My inner child got upset,” recalls George. But then, she called her friend. “I told her I failed and admitted I was envious,” she says. Being frank shifted her attitude, and she was surprised to realize she could share her friend’s happiness and experience her own, in tum. “I congratulated my friend and told her she inspired me,” George says.
This is what scientists called freudenfreude, meaning finding pleasure in another person’s success, even if it doesn’t directly involve us. Freudenfreude is like social glue, says Catherine Chambliss, a professor of psychology at Ursinus College. It makes relationships “close and more enjoyable.” A study in 2021 examined freudenfreude’s role in daily life and found that it could improve life satisfaction and even help people co-operate during a conflict.
While the benefits of freudenfreude are plentiful, it doesn’t always come easily. If you were raised in a family that paired winning with self-worth, Chambliss says, you might misread someone else’s victory as your own personal shortcoming. Besides, mental health can also affect your ability to participate in someone else’s joy. Negative emotions like anger or dislike may lead to the opposite of freudenfreude.
Luckily, the ability of freudenfreude can be exercised. To help people strengthen joy-sharing muscles, Chambliss and his colleagues developed a programme called Freudenfreude Enhancement Training practices. They found that depressed students who used the practices for two weeks had an easier time expressing freudenfreude, which enhanced their relationships and improved their moods. Given that, having freudenfreude is beneficial and it is worthwhile to explore ways to encourage the feeling.
37.According to scientists, what is freudenfreude
38.What impact does freudenfreude have on daily life
39.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
Freudenfreude doesn’t always come easily, and it is affected by your family environment and physical health.
40.Besides George’s experience mentioned in the passage, please describe one of your experiences of freudenfreude. (In about 40 words)

41.
Dear Jim,
In response to your request, I have conducted the survey on English extensive reading. Here are the results:
The majority of the participants (73%) occasionally engage in this practice. Very few (7%) of those surveyed report reading frequently while one fifth (20%) admit they have never done it before.
As a passionate bookworm, I definitely vote for the “frequently” option. Extensive reading deepens my appreciation for English, which in turn increases my language proficiency. Second, the worlds created by the authors, either fictional or not, allow me to know society and myself better, enabling me to see the world anew.
I hope you find the above information useful. If you have any other questions, please let me know.
Yours,
