The chaos of travel through Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) calms down when you walk into the Orchestrina. At the start of a 1,000-foot-long hallway connecting Tom Bradley International Terminal’s (航站楼) Great Hall to its west gates, the light softens to blue. What amazes passengers is the gentle waves of music that greets them as they are carried through the terminal by the moving sidewalk. Along the way, the music shifts between 30 compositions from well-known artists.
The Orchestrina, a piece of public art equipment from L.A.radio and Dublab, is part of a new three-year contract for the station to program live music and sound art at LAX. It’s an introduction to L.A.’s experimental music and art scenes. As passengers are on edge over the many things going wrong in the skies these days, the Orchestria offers an experience of tasteful, mental peace.
“That’s absolutely the intention, to offer, like, a break from the fast-paced urban schedule,” said Cohen, executive director of Dublab, “There’s a really interesting effect when you enter the hallway, coming down this long set of stairs and entering this blue light that completely surrounds you with music and field recordings where you can hear birds and wind passing through grass.” There are many events planned for the three years to come, as Dublab tries to make one of the most awful locations in the county somewhere you might intend staying longer and listening.
“We desire to reflect our city, and I think we’ve got to bake the arts programming in as part of that. At the end of the day, we’re all just human beings using these public spaces.” explained Sarah Cifarelli, LAX Art Program Director. “That’s part of the point, though — to show off the city for anyone looking closely and make it gentler for anyone passing through. These are the things that you kind of live for, you work for, being part of the heartbeat of the city,” Cohen said, “It’s another step towards being integrated into the city whether intentionally or not.”
4.What impresses the passengers when they walk into the Orchestrina
A.The long hallway. B.The blue light.
C.The moving sidewalk. D.The relaxing music.
5.What will Dublab’s three-year project bring according to Cohen
A.A refreshing interaction with nature. B.A momentary escape from busy routine.
C.The increase in LAX’s commercial value. D.The promotion of local artists and their music.
6.What is the arts programming aimed at
A.Making full use of public spaces. B.Prioritizing showing off the city.
C.Being mixed into the city’s identity. D.Speeding up the city’s development.
7.Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text
A.Dublab’s Music: a Relief from Stress B.Exploring LAX: Finding Peace in Light
C.LAX’s New Art Program: Peace in Chaos D.Orchestrina: a High-tech Design in the City
As Alexandria Country Day School’s sixth-graders created small 3D printed villages to address homelessness, they learned lessons far beyond technology.
“It Takes a Village” began as a project for a science class — inspired by life-size 3D printed homes built by Austin, Texas-based technology company Icon, whose aim is to make affordable housing accessible to everyone.
The tech-focused project quickly developed into an exercise to bring about lasting change, said science teacher Alison McDonald. “When most people think of helping the homeless, they think of food and clothing drives,” said Juliet Galicia, 11. While necessary, those are temporary solutions. Even housing by itself is not a complete solution. In designing their leave-homelessness-behind neighborhoods, shelters, food stores and schools came first. But to build a sense of belonging and purpose, the communities also emphasised areas for frequent interaction among residents. “We wanted to include extras that would make it feel more like a real community,” said Luke Wazorko, 11.
“They get it!” said Amber Fogarty, president of Mobile Loaves & Fishes, anon-profit organization dealing with homelessness in Austin, after learning about the sixth-graders’ project. “The biggest cause of long-term homelessness is a loss in family relationships,” she said. “Housing alone will never solve homelessness, but the community will. People need a place where they are known and loved.”
Many companies around the world are experimenting with this technology. So far, only interior (内部的) and exterior walls are 3D printed. A team of three to four people complete that task using a computer app and monitoring the process. Roofing, doors, windows, and finishing still need carpenters (木工), electricians and painters. Designs are adaptable to individual preferences. Amber Fogarty said, “It’s a journey of discovery. We don’t know what the future holds for this new technology, but we’re excited about its innovative possibilities.”
8.What gave the sixth-graders the idea of starting the project
A.The technology of an organization. B.People’s need for affordable homes.
C.3D printed homes made by a company. D.Suggestions from their science teacher.
9.What can we infer about the project from Paragraph 3
A.It was too expensive for the homeless. B.It aimed to create a sense of community.
C.It found a solution to housing problems. D.It hardly considered people’s daily needs.
10.What did Amber Fogarty think of the project
A.It showed that the homeless were cared for.
B.It collected a lot of money for the homeless.
C.It provided a chance for the homeless to work.
D.It made people in the community accept the homeless.
11.What would be the best title for the text
A.3D printed homes set a good example to future homes
B.Homeless people receive plenty of help from organizations
C.Showing kindness to the homeless is important in the community
D.Students use 3D printing to create a community for the homeless
Could the secret to the perfect cup of tea be hiding underground The complex flavors in a quality cup of tea are often attributed to the plant’s leaves. But new research suggests that the taste of a quality cup of tea may also depend on the plant’s roots — specifically, the microbes (微生物) that live there.
Tea breeders (培育员) in China have spent centuries cultivating the perfect cup of tea. But despite modern breeding technologies, improving the taste of tea through genetic selection alone has proven to be a challenge. But a new study, published in the journal Current Biology, has shown that DNA is not the only thing that affects the taste of tea.
Previous studies have shown that microbes can affect the plant’s ability to take in nutrients from the soil around them. And, it turns out, these nutrients can affect the plant’s production of certain chemicals that may affect their taste.
Specifically, the team found that plants with microbes that encourage the absorption of ammonia (氨) produce more of a compound called theanine (茶氨酸), a key determinant of the tea’s taste. Armed with this knowledge, the team created a synthetic (合成的) microbial community, based on those found on high-theanine tea varieties. By applying these synthetic colonies to roots of other tea plants, the team found that they were able to boost theanine levels in low-theanine varieties too.
“The initial expectation for the synthetic microbial community derived from high quality tea plant roots was to enhance the quality of low-quality tea plants,” co-author Wenxin Tang said in a statement. “However, to our astonishment, we discovered that the synthetic microbial community not only enhances the quality of low-quality tea plants but also brings a significant promoting effect on certain high-quality tea varieties. Furthermore, this effect is particularly obvious in low-nitrogen (氮) soil conditions.”
These findings suggest that synthetically produced microbial communities could be used to improve the taste of tea plants, particularly when their surrounding soils lack key plant nutrients. These colonies may also support nutrient absorption in other plant species, allowing farmers to rely less on synthetic fertilizers.
12.What can be inferred from the first two paragraphs
A.Microbes can change the DNA of tea and improve its flavors.
B.Simply using genetic methods to better tea flavors is not enough.
C.Chinese tea breeders have failed to cultivate a quality cup of tea.
D.New research finds tea flavors have nothing to do with tea leaves.
13.How can the team enhance theanine levels in low-theanine varieties
A.By increasing the ammonia intake of low-theanine varieties.
B.By exposing roots of low-theanine varieties to more microbes.
C.By attaching synthetic colonies to roots of low-theanine varieties.
D.By creating a synthetic microbial community from other varieties.
14.What is surprising in terms of functions of synthetic colonies
A.It will improve the quality of low-nitrogen soil.
B.It can enhance the quality of low-quality tea plants.
C.It plays a big role in improving the quality of high-quality tea plants.
D.It helps to improve the quality of soil by increasing the quantity of nitrogen.
15.What does the author imply in the last paragraph
A.Synthetic colonies can be applied to a wider range of plants.
B.Synthetic colonies have effects on environment and farming.
C.Synthetic colonies will replace synthetic fertilizers completely.
D.Synthetic colonies can be used to improve the soil quality of tea plants.
Whether it’s for your health, environment or your wallet, gardening has seen a boom in recent years. Research has shown that spending more time outside is key to the nation’s well-being. 16
There’s nothing like eating your own vegetables. Whether picking your own strawberries or unearthing the first new potatoes of the year, home-grown vegetables are a joy. 17 Plants and smaller vegetables are more than happy in pots on windowsills or small balconies, and are easy to grow from seed.
It’s amazing to have someone to talk to when you’re enjoying tending to your plants or vegetables. Simply being out and about in your garden invites interaction and conversation with neighbors and people in your local area, which in itself has multiple social benefits. 18 Joining them is a great way of meeting people and getting rid of unwanted-yet-perfectly-good-surplus plants, or gathering cuttings to keep the cost of buying plants down.
Did you know that 30 minutes of gardening burns as many calories as playing badminton From digging, weeding to lopping and mowing, there’s a whole world of muscle movement. 19 It can be achieved with a good digging technique proposed by the Royal Horticultural (园艺的) Society — ensuring the minimal back bend and a large knee bend.
20 Garden is a vital home for many species and watching visiting birds, bees and butterflies can be unbelievably rewarding and relaxing for you. Accordingly, there will be a gradual decline in your stress levels.
A.Don’t forget the wildlife.
B.Thus, your body can be fully exercised.
C.You don’t need to have large space to do so.
D.However, try to reduce the risk of strain and injury.
E.Here are some tips to help you get a better harvest in your garden.
F.Most people throw themselves into gardening, with incredibly positive reasons.
G.Besides, local gardening groups can also be invaluable for information sharing.
