It’s not quite often when we see architects devoted to creating buildings as more than art, expression, or technological creation. Shigeru Ban is one of the most clever architects who knows how to recognize pressing problems and come up with the best solutions for them.
Shigeru Ban is a Japanese architect born in Tokyo in 1957, he founded Shigeru Ban Architects in 1985 and has since then expanded branches from Tokvo to New York and Paris. His career has spanned over various architectural fields from commercial spaces to museums, but his disaster relief (救灾) work shines the most.
He set a new standard for socially-aware and emergent (紧急的) architecture and paved the way for teaching the whole world how building skills can help in times of crises. His unique method earned him the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2014, where he was honored for his devotion to designing shelters for disaster-stricken areas. He is highly praised for showing how architecture can be a tool for positive social change, particularly in his attention to using materials and attending to social needs.
In a 2017 interview, Shigeru Ban was asked about what guided him towards being involved with disaster relief architecture. His replies detailed that there seemed to be a lack of social responsibility among architects in Japan regarding this matter, so he felt the urge to take action. After the Kobe earthquake in 1995, Ban saw the poor living conditions related to evacuation centers and wanted to make a change with architecture.
Following this event, he established the Voluntary Architects’ Network (VAN) to provide support to disaster-affected areas worldwide. When asked whether his initiatives were inspired by Japan’s continuous risk for earthquakes and volcano eruptions, he explained that his motivation (动力) comes from a desire to improve living conditions for disaster victims rather than Japan’s geographic risks. He’s a man with a skill for identifying problems and finding solutions.
4. What does the underlined word “expanded” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Organized. B. Enlarged. C. Strengthened. D. Tracked.
5. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about
A. The new standard Ban set for architecture.
B. The creative use of materials in Ban’s design.
C. The achievements of Ban’s disaster relief work.
D. The reasons Ban designed shelters for the homeless.
6. What was Ban’s motivation for disaster relief work
A. His skills in dealing with natural disaster.
B. His terrible suffering in a natural disaster.
C. His concern about Japan’s geographic risks.
D. His desire to improve the life of those in need.
7. Which of the following can best describe Shigeru Ban
A. Caring and creative. B. Responsible but impolite.
C. Selfless but careless. D. Talented and outgoing.

Western fashion brands (时尚品牌) have a design problem with Chinese characters, or hanzi. They still disappoint Chinese customers with the way they use Chinese writing on their products.
The most common mistakes suggest there is not enough research and cultural understanding. For example, a Burberry scarf was embroidered (刺绣) with the Chinese character fu upright instead of upside down, as it’s traditionally shown in China. Even the fonts (字体) are a problem. In May, Dior, one of the world’s leading fashion brands, started a special service for customers to have their Chinese names embroidered on Book Tote handbags. When some Chinese stars carrying the customized handbags were shown on social media, the Chinese fashion community expressed their disappointment. Many believed the font on Dior’s handbags showed little artistic taste and looked cheap.
It’s not all disappointment, though. Experimentation and careful research have brought positive results for brands coming close to hanzi. Consider the logo (标志) created for Prada Rong Zhai, an old building repaired and owned by the Prada Group in Shanghai. The Rong Zhai type was created by 2 x4 (a New York-based design studio) by using the Roman letters in the original Prada logo to create the Chinese characters. The result is a unique logo that suggests both lettered strictness and a classic Prada style. The type’s West-meet-East mix won broad admiration among Chinese customers online.
One way to keep up to date is to team up with creatives and artists of the country to create designs that can be more acceptable to Chinese customers. Joining forces with local partners can also avoid misunderstandings that happen when a design team doesn't know Chinese culture very well.
8. What were the Chinese fashion community disappointed at?
A. The design’s old-fashion. B. The design’s higher price.
C. The design’s common font. D. The design’s ugly brand name.
9. What is special about the logo of Prada Rong Zhai?
A. It brings together Western and Chinese writing.
B. It is created to introduce Chinese hanzi culture.
C. It was designed by online supporters of the company.
D. It invited a famous Chinese star to write the characters.
10. What does the author expect Western designers to do?
A. Try to create more fashionable fonts. B. Show more hanzi in Western culture.
C. Find the causes of cultural differences. D. Work together with Chinese designers.
11 What does the text mainly want to tell us?
A. International brands spreading Chinese culture.
B. Western fashion's struggle with Chinese writing.
C. Western designers' research on Chinese characters.
D. The collection between Chinese customers and hanzi.

Every day after school, she stayed in the music room, practicing her song again and again. Her hard work paid off. On the stage, she sang the song beautifully, earning warm applause from the audience. In the end, she won first prize. Everyone felt proud of her.
