“With the passing of Chinese scientist Yuan Longping, China and the world have lost one greatest agricultural scientists,” Kenneth Quinn, president of the World Food Prize Foundation, said. Quinn, also vice chairman of the Yuan Longping International Rice Development Forum, shared his memory of the “father of hybrid rice” in an interview with Xinhua on Sunday.
Quinn first met Yuan in October 2004, when Yuan traveled to Des Moines in the U.S. state of Iowa to receive the World Food Prize. As they walked out of the airport , Quinn received a call and stepped aside to speak. When he turned back a minute or two later, he lost Yuan. “I had never before ‘lost’ a laureate(贵人),” he said. After a desperate search, he found Professor Yuan surrounded by a group of smiling graduate students from Iowa State University who so admired him that they wanted to take him off for a meal and conversation.
Quinn admired Yuan as a teacher. “He always had time to answer questions and speak with young scientists and students. The American high school students we sent to his research center each year always returned filled with knowledge and a deep desire to learn more.”
In Quinn’s eyes, Yuan was incredibly humble, never seeking fame, and focused only on hard work and results that could help lift people out of poverty. With a ‘down to earth’ attitude, Yuan greatly reduced hunger and provided farmers with surplus income through his discovery of hybrid rice.
Learning of Yuan’s passing away on Saturday, Quinn issued a statement to send his deepest sympathy to Yuan’s family and colleagues in China, as well as his admirers across the world. “Professor Yuan Longping, who was truly beloved in his country and by all of us who knew him, will be greatly missed. His legacy will provide inspiration to generations far into the future, in China and across the world,” Quinn said in the statement.
4. How did Kenneth Quinn feel when he found Yuan in a group of students
A. Confused. B. Amazed. C. Annoyed. D. Frightened.
5. How did Yuan Longping deal with young people
A. He cared about the development of the youth.
B. He sent young students abroad for further study.
C. He was too busy to answer the students’ question.
D. He was generous to help young people out of trouble.
6. What does the words “down to earth” mean in paragraph 4
A. Realistic . B. Stubborn C. Flexible D. Critical
7. What is the purpose of the text
A. To introduce the “father of hybrid rice”.
B. To share the stories of Yuan Longping.
C. To remember Professor Yuan Longping
D. To inspire the young to become a pioneer.
C
Humans feed thousands of songs to AI (人工智能). And it is able to analyse the basic information and recognize patterns that can be used to create original music. Such AI-created music is similar to those that any musician might compose.
Recently, an AI-powered system, the Flow Machines, has released a song Daddy’s Car. This system is able to analyse the composers’ original ideas and come up with more ideas to assist them in composing. The system tries to combine the human mind with AI.
Another great invention is Jukedeck, which works very easily. In order to create a new piece, the user just needs to select items like the desired music style (folk, rock, etc.) and the mood (sad or happy). After a few seconds, AI provides a piece of music for the user to download. Each user can create music tailored to his or her interest.
Some musicians use AI to achieve what they could not do on their own. For example, Yacht, an American pop group, has used AI to break out of their comfort zone and try to create something different from their previous songs. Soon they have their new album, which contains 10 songs, all of which are very popular.
The development of AI technology also comes with some concerns. Some human composers fear that their work might be replaced by a machine. Some others are worried about music itself and the music industry, as AI is now able to create music more and more similar to human-composed music.
Faced with this challenge, on one hand, human musicians need to remain creative; on the other hand, they should understand how to use these new tools to explore new frontiers. Perhaps the future role of the human musicians will be to focus on emotions, leaving the machines to take care of other procedures.
8. What is the new development about AI in the text
A. Its progress in replacing humans. B. Its ability in music composing.
C. Its influence on human emotions. D. Its focus on changing human mind.
9. Why could Yacht create the popular new album
A. Because they stuck to their former music style.
B. Because they went beyond themselves with AI.
C. Because they put in more than ten original songs.
D. Because they insisted on composing by themselves.
10. What is the last paragraph mainly about
A. Problems about AI composing. B. Limitations of AI technology.
C. Challenges for human composers. D. Suggestions to human musicians.
11. Which word best describes the author’s attitude toward AI technology
A. Objective. B. Doubtful. C. Uncaring D. Confused.
D
Have you ever wondered why you might be a little taller than your friends or family Well, scientists believe the mystery of why humans are growing taller and reaching puberty (青春期) earlier is due to something in the brain.
We already know that better nutrition leads to greater height as humans have been growing taller on the whole in recent centuries. Better nutrition also causes people to reach maturity faster. Genes (基因) also play a role in how tall we become and we all grow and look according to the codes in our DNA. A lack of nutrition makes it harder for us to reach the full potential of our own genes.
According to the University of Maryland, our body requires a certain amount of energy to make us grow. But a new study suggests that a brain receptor (感受器) could be responsible for our growth. The study showed that the brain receptor MC3R is responsible for signals from food reaching a part of the brain called the hypothalamus (下丘脑). The hypothalamus is responsible for keeping things in check like body temperature and adjusting appetite and weight.
MC3R’s not working properly tends to mean that people are shorter and start puberty much later. Professor Sir Stephen O’ Rahilly, one of the authors of the study, said, “It tells the body we’re great here and that we’ve got lots of food, so grow quickly and have puberty soon.”
There is a lot about the brain we still don’t know. But this research could lead to further development of drugs for children with delayed growth and puberty starting much later. More understanding of the receptor won’t mean that we can make ourselves taller. That all still depends on genes, but it could help people with long-lasting illnesses, who need to build up muscle.
12. What can we learn from the second paragraph
A. Genes lead to faster maturity. B. Nutrition determines a person’s height.
C. Improper nutrition changes one’s genes. D. Better nutrition is important to growing taller.
13. How does MC3R work to get you taller according to the new study
A. By taking in a large amount of nutrition itself.
B. By having us check body temperatures regularly.
C. By helping us control our appetite to lose weight.
D. By sending signals to inspire us to have more nutrition.
14. What will the new finding most probably contribute to
A. Finding ways to put off kid’s puberty.
B. Treating patients with long-lasting illness.
C. Developing medicine for kids with delayed growth.
D. Finding scientific exercise to get our muscle stronger.
15. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A. Why Are Some People Shorter Genes Are to Blame
B. Why Are Some People Shorter Nutrition Is to Blame
C. Why Are Some People Taller The Key Is in Our Brains
D. Why Are Some People Taller The Key Is in Our Appetite

It was a Saturday. Whether it was sunny or cloudy, hot or cold, I cannot remember, but I do remember it was a Saturday because the mall was packed with people.
I was with my mom. Mom is short and skinny. It is easy to overlook her in a crowd simply because she is nothing extraordinary to see.
On that day, we wondered in the mall, peeking at fancy shops in fleeting (短暂的) glances, because we both knew we wouldn’t be buying much, like always.
I remember I was looking up at the people we passed as we walked. Ladies wore 5-inch heels that click importantly on the floor and bright clothing. Men strode by smelling of sharp cologne (古龙香水), faces clear of wrinkles - wiped away with expensive creams.
An uneasy feeling started to settle in my chest. It got more unbearable with every second until I could deny it no longer: I was ashamed of my mother.
I could see the heavy lines around mom’s eyes and the mouth, deep into her skin without luxurious lotions to ease them away. She wore cheap, ragged clothes. Her eyes were tired from working long hours to make ends meet and her hair too gray for her age.
I looked at her, and I was ashamed. My mom is nothing extraordinary, yet at that moment she stood out because she was just so plain.
I didn’t want to be seen with her, although there was no one important around to see me anyway. Telling her I’d meet her at the clothes outlet around the corner, I hurried away to the bathroom. When I finally made my way to the outlet, I found that mom wasn’t there. “She must be in some second-hand store.” I thought to myself.
But I couldn’t have been more wrong. Mom was standing in the middle of a high-end store, holding a sweater that looked much too expensive. “This will look good on you. Do you want it ”
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡相应位置作答。
It was too much expensive. And I almost agreed, carelessly, thoughtlessly.

I was no longer ashamed of her, but of myself. “Do you want it ” My mom repeated. “No, thanks.”

【答案】参考范文1:
As someone said, “It is better to travel ten thousand miles than to read ten thousand books.” Therefore, compared to staying at home and reading books, I believe that traveling can bring more benefits.
First and foremost, traveling allows me to expose myself to different cultures and traditions, so it boosts my personal and intellectual growth. Admittedly, I need to arrange my own routes, accommodation and transportation, which not only strengthens my independence but also helps me better adapt to different environments and challenges.
Overall, I think traveling will provide me with much-needed relaxation and inspiration.

1. 续写词数应为150左右;

【答案】 It was too much expensive. And I almost agreed, carelessly, thoughtlessly. Then I took a closer look at the small, weary woman with a big smile stretching across her narrow face and a shiny sweater in her rough hands, happy to be giving me something so nice, and my words died in my throat. Her clothes were tattered and old because she spent her money buying me new ones. She looked so tired and ragged all the time because she was busy working to provide for me. She didn’t wear jewelry or scented perfumes because she spent all she had on me.
I was no longer ashamed of her, but of myself. “Do you want it ” My mom repeated. “No, thanks.” I responded, hardly containing my tears and the strangled voice, “It’s not worth it.” I wanted to confide to Mom: it’s not worth the hard-earn money and it’s not worth buying it for her daughter who should be ashamed of a plainly-looking yet devoted mother. Holding Mom’srough but warm hands tightly, I was determined secretly to buy a delicate sweater for her. Mom is more than extraordinary in my eyes.
t worth the hard-earn money and it’s not worth buying it for her daughter who should be ashamed of a plainly-looking yet devoted mother.(who引导定语从句)
