Lesson 2 Protecting the Sea
Analysis of the text
This lesson is about protecting the sea. By studying of this lesson, we’ll enable the students to develop the serious attitude towards environmental problems and raise their awareness in protecting the sea. This text is a dialogue between two persons, Fang Zhou and Zhi Hong, talking about their science project.
Analysis of the students
In this period, students have commanded a number of words and expressions and show interests in learning English. Through the introduction of functions and problems of the sea, their learning interests can be motivated. And as we all know, listening belongs to the input during the process of language learning. The input has great effect on output, such as speaking and writing. Hence it is beneficial for students’ speaking and writing abilities.

1. To talk about causes, problems and solutions of sea pollution and over-fishing.

1. To develop scientific consciousness by the introduction of sea problems. 2. To motivate students’ caring for the future of the world;? 3. To cultivate students’ ability of organization and sense of cooperation.
Teaching important points
1. Help students to understand the passage better, identify different kinds of sea problems and talk about its causes and solutions.
2. Help students to understand the details of the text and get students to learn different listening skills.

1. How to help students improve their listening ability and understand the conversation better.
Teaching Methods
(1) Task-based language teaching
A task resembles activities which our students or other people carry out in everyday life. Learners should be given opportunities to reflect on what they have learned and check how well they are doing.
(2) Communicative language teaching
Language is used for communication. It’s learner-centered and emphasizes on communications and real-life situation.
(3) Computer assisted language teaching
Language learning needs a context, which can help learners understand the language and then can produce comprehensible output, so computer has the advantages to make the materials attractive.

Step One: Lead in
1. Watch some pictures about the pure and beautiful sea. Depict your feeling.

2. How do people use the sea? How is the sea important to human being?
Common functions:
doing water sports; finding seafood; electric power; transportation; touring; exploring oil.
“Interest is the best teacher”, therefore, at the very beginning of the class, I should spark students’ mind to focus on the central topic “the sea”. Then the students will be eager to know something about the passage, and this is the very time to naturally lead the class into step two.
Step Two: Pre-listening
1. Free Talk: Read the title “Protecting the Sea”. What occurs to you when you first read the title?
2. What is happening to the sea?
pollution; over-fishing; sea level; diversity of species; ecology; red tide.
Summary:
The sea is the cradle of life.
Modern technology owes ecology an apology.
Through discussions, this part will center on the introduction of the lesson and show students some basic knowledge about the topic.
Step Three: While-listening
In this step, I will use task-based teaching method, which can give students a clear and specific purpose while listening to the conversation.
First Listening: get the general idea and make notes.
Task One:
Listen to the tapes and find out what is Zhi Hong’s project about?.
It is about protecting the sea.

Task Two:
Listen to the conversation again and complete the table.

The students will be asked to just listen to the conversation once, and then guess what is read in the text. They will be asked to find out the main idea of the passage. The purpose of this task is to develop students’ listening skill and encourage students to express their thoughts in English.
In this step, the students are required to listen for specific information. The purpose is to get the correct and useful information. Students should have a correct understanding of details.
Step Four: Summary
Now what has happened to the sea?
Pollution; Over-fishing
What are the causes of these problems?
Pollution: agricultural waste, industrial waste, oil, rubbish, chemicals, plastic
Over-fishing:
Too many fishermen fish in the same place.
Better technology can catch more fish.
What should we do to handle the problems?
Pollution: reduce pollution, keep a record, find origins, punish the law-breaker.
Over-fishing: control fishing, ban fishing in the worst areas, get other kinds of jobs for fishermen.
In this step, the main passage is summarized in order to deepen students’ understanding on the topic.

Step Five: Group work---make a speech
Give a speech on protecting the sea. You merely need to focus on one problem, either pollution or over-fishing. Work in your group and choose one representative to give the speech.

Write a composition on protecting the sea. List the problems, causes and solutions. Remember to use the following words and expressions.

Causes: agricultural and industrial waste, fishermen, technology
Solutions: deal with, be responsible for, break the law, punish, keep a record of, control, communicate.
This homework is designed to improve students’ writing ability and review what they have learnt in this lesson.
