On January 20, 2025, a Chinese tech company named DeepSeek made a new AI called DeepSeek-R1.
This smart program can solve math problems, write code (代码), and answer questions like top models such as OpenAI’s GPT-4o, but it costs much less to build. The team spent only $ 5.58 million (1/70 of OpenAI’s cost) and used 2,048 computer chips (计算机芯片) for two months. This shows that good ideas can beat big money.
DeepSeek-R1 learns by trying many times and getting better, like how students practice math. Other AIs need many prepared examples, but R1 improves by itself. For example, in a global math test, it got 79.8% right, slightly higher than OpenAI’s model. A simple version of R1 can even run on low-cost computers, helping schools and small companies.
DeepSeek-R1 is free to use and change. On its first day online, over 19,000 programmers worldwide started projects to study it. A German scientist said experiments with R1 cost $ 10 instead of $ 300 with other AIs. Even Meta ( a famous U.S. tech company ) top scientist said, “This kind of free AI could change the world.”
U.S. tech companies are worried. Meta plans to spend $ 65 billion more on AI research. Experts say China is catching up fast. A report in Nature magazine called R1 a “big step forward”, showing that smart ideas beat expensive tools.
As a DeepSeek engineer said, “We want AI to be a friend, not something only rich people can use.” With R1, China shows the world that great things come from new ideas and hard work, not just money.
34.How much did it cost to build DeepSeek-R1
A.$ 5.58 million. B.$ 65 billion. C.$ 10. D.$ 300.
35.What does “improves by itself” mean in the article
A.It needs programmers to fix mistakes. B.It expresses answers from other AIs.
C.It becomes better through practice. D.It only works with expensive tools.
36.Why did Meta plan to spend more money on AI research
A.To help Chinese companies. B.To compete with DeepSeek-R1.
C.To build more computer chips. D.To hire German scientists.
37.What is the main purpose of the article
A.To compare Chinese and American AI technologies.
B.To encourage students to become programmers.
C.To explain how computer chips work.
D.To introduce a low-cost AI model from China.

On January 28, 2025, a special performance called YangBOT (《秧BOT》) amazed audiences at the CCTV Spring Festival Gala, China’s most-watched TV show.
Directed by a famous filmmaker Zhang Yimou, the show mixed traditional Chinese yangko dance with modern robot technology.
In the performance, humanoid robots (robots shaped like humans) dressed in colorful costumes danced yangko, a joyful folk dance from northern China often seen during festivals. The robots learned dance moves through AI and used laser navigation (激光导航) to move safely on the uneven stage. Their strong joints (关节) helped them balance perfectly during fast steps. Zhang Yimou explained, “This dance isn’t just fun. It shows how technology can bring new life to traditions.”
Thanks to these innovations (创新), the robots won the hearts of millions. On social media, topics like “Robot Yangko” trended quickly. The young called it “cool”, while the old loved its humor and festive spirit.

The lion dance is a traditional Chinese performance art with a rich history. People believe it brings good luck and keeps away from bad spirits. It creates a festival atmosphere and brings happiness.
Two artists wear a lion costume to perform (表演) the dance. One plays the head and front legs. The other plays the back and hind legs. The pair work together to do many difficult movements during the performance. They need to practice kung fu to do their job well.

They spun handkerchiefs (手绢) at once and formed creative group patterns. These robots were developed by Unitree (a Chinese robotics company). This was not Unitree’s first success. In 2021, their robot cows named “Ben Ben” danced as backup for the singer Liu Dehua.
The YangBOT program is a perfect mix of China’s technological progress and cultural pride. As one fan said, “It’s like watching the future and past dance together!”

The lion dance is a traditional Chinese performance art with a rich history. It is performed during festivals, celebrations, and important events, such as weddings, business openings and especially Chinese New Year.
The lion dance was being performed as early as the Han Dynasty. No one knows exactly how it started. Some say it had to do with war. One day, an emperor dreamed of a strange animal after a fight. It was fierce but didn’t look like a tiger. The emperor wanted eagerly to know what it was. The next day, his advisors told him that this animal was a lion. The emperor thought that it was a gift from heaven.
Then, he asked people to make this animal out of paper, cloth and bamboo. The “lion models” were used in future fights to encourage soldiers (战士). Later it became a form of art. The lion became a symbol of power, courage, and wisdom in Chinese culture.
The lion dance takes two forms. One is performed in the north and the other in the south. The northern lion looks more real, while the southern lion looks more like a dragon.
