Everyone loves toys. But do you know how a toy is designed and produced A visit to Yottoy, a toy company in New York, can show you how to do this. Yottoy designs toys that are based on children’s books. These toys include Paddington Bear, Little Prince and Mary’s Little Lamb. Peter Doodeheefver, the designer of toys, took us around his shop to see how the toys are created.
We visited a sewing(缝纫)station. People there were busy sewing some toys together. Later, we saw another station where a woman was painting pieces of a Paddington Bear toy set. Here, we learned how they use clay and models to create toy parts. The models are painted to look like characters from children’s books. Throughout the toy-creating process, the creators keep in touch with the writers of the books. They need to make sure the toys perfectly match the images the writers describe in their books. Sometimes changing the colour of the fabric(织物)or the length of the arms can make the toy more accurate.
Once their toys are created, they send them to a lab for safety tests. At the lab, they make sure all the parts are put together perfectly. For example, they make sure the eves can’t be removed by a baby, or that pieces of the tors won’t fall off. After the lab says the toys are ready, they can be sold.
Designers look at the books that the toys are based on. They consider the colours, shapes and images described in the books. Later, these things appear on the packaging. This makes the packaging look accurate.

C.They will send the toys to a lab for safety tests.

Once there were many thousands of Gourma Desert (沙漠)elephants in Mali, a country in West Africa. Now, there are fewer than four hundred.
Why did the number of the elephants drop so quickly On the one hand, the elephant’s main lake, their only water source, dried up. On the other hand, the land which the elephants lived on was overused by humans.
To protect the elephants’ living environment, the Mali Elephant Project(MEP) was started in 2007. MEP met with local people and helped them make rules of using land and water. As a result, the situation became better and there was more food, forest and grassland.
However, from 2012 to 2016, poaching(偷猎)and illegal trade in the elephants increased rapidly. Eighty-three elephants were lost in 2015 alone and another fifty-one elephants were killed in 2016. “If this situation goes on, all the Gourma elephants will be killed by 2020,” said a member of MEP.
Luckily, the voice of MEP was heard. More organizations have joined together to educate the local people that trading elephants is against the law. Elephant poaching has dropped to a very low level. The local people have learned to live peacefully with the elephants, one of the wildlife treasures in the world.
21.Why was MEP started
A.To raise more elephants in Mali. B.To stop the main lake from drying up.
C.To discover water source for elephants. D.To protect the elephants’ living environment.
22.What does “this situation” in paragraph four refer to
A.fifty-one elephants were killed in 2016 B.the increase of poaching and illegal trade
C.all the Gourma elephants were killed D.eighty-three elephants were lost
23.Which of the following is TRUE
A.There are 400 Gourma Desert elephants in Mali, West Africa.
B.Human activities also led to the decrease of the elephant population.
C.134 elephants were killed and traded illegally from 2012 to 2016.
D.MEP was the only organization to fight against illegal trade of elephants.
24.What can we learn from the last paragraph
A.The number of organizations has dropped. B.There is less elephant poaching now.
C.The local people keep the elephants at home. D.The whole world live peacefully with elephants.
25.What is this passage mainly about
A.The work of Mali Elephant Project. B.The elephant poaching in West Africa.
C.The rules of using land and water in Mali. D.The education of the local people in Mali.
阅读全文,并从下列六个句子中选择五个还原到原文中,使原文的意思完整、连贯,并将其标号填入题前的括号内。
You’ve been learning words since you were a tiny baby. At first, you learned them only by hearing other people talk. Now that you’re a reader, you have another way to learn words. What should you do when you come to a word and you think you don’t know what it means 26
Say it
First, sound it out. Then say it to yourself. 27
Sometimes you know a word in your head but you don’t know what it looks like in print. So if you match up what you know and what you read—you have the word!
Use context
If this doesn’t work, take the next step: look at the context—the other words and sentences around it. Read this sentence: When it rained, the dog looked for shelter in the doorway. 28
Rain and in the doorway might give you helpful information.
29
If the context doesn’t help, look at the parts of the word. Does it have any parts you know These can help you understand what it means. If you don’t know the meaning of miner, try looking at parts of the word. For example, -er at the end of a word means “a person who does something”. So a miner might be someone who works in a mine.
Look it up
If the three steps above don’t work, you can look it up. 30 —either a book or online. Nobody knows the meaning of every word, but good readers know how to understand words they don’t know.
A.Use word parts.
B.Throw away the words.
C.It might sound like a word you know.
D.You can find the word in a dictionary.
E.Following some easy steps can help you.
F.If the word shelter doesn’t look familiar, look at the words around it.

C I think the suggestion is of great value. Life education can guide us students to actively face the challenges and difficulties in life, and form positive values and outlook on life. —Chen Yitian, 15, Chengdu
D I think learning a foreign language is very important. It’s not only a language but also abridge of communication between different countries. What we need is to find ways to make English learning easier and happier. —Fen Chengrui, 12, Shanghai
D I support this idea. Although people have a week-long holiday during the Spring Festival, the actual holiday time is three days and they have to work two days on weekends. Such long working hours will make people tired, which may affect people’s health. —Lai Yijiang, 13, Lanzhou
F I support this idea. With the development of smart and health technologies, we can use them to provide strong support for medical services and health management systems for the elderly. It’s our responsibility to respect and care for the elderly. —Qian Wencan, 15, Beijing

A perfect Chinese woman 40 (describe) as “tall and thin”—but in real life, not everyone can achieve (实现) this. I have some 41 (friend) that are women here, and they often complain (抱怨) about themselves because of this. It’s really too bad when I think they look beautiful.
42 , Chinese men don’t seem to receive much attention (注意) about how they look—people seem to care more about men’s incomes (收入) or jobs. Sometimes I’m asked questions 43 others, questions like “How much do you make ” or “What’s your job ” Not many people appear to care if I’m a bit fat or short.
Our biggest critics (批评者) are ourselves. If you don’t feel good about your body, don’t be too hard on yourself.
