Like most couples, my husband and I dreamed of becoming homeowners. Sure, apartment living comes with its own set of advantages—less housework, shared comfort, less to clean up and care for, and usually cheaper rent. As a result, we decided to downgrade from our neat five-bedroom, 2,700-square-foot house on the water to a three-bedroom, 1,369-square-foot apartment, with two kids.
Once we arrived in our new apartment, we were surprised to find that things flowed relatively smoothly. There was so much less to keep up with—fewer floors to mop, fewer windows to clean, fewer walls to wipe, etc. Now I think of our home as our little playhouse, since it's much smaller and everything is closer together. That also makes it so much easier for me to keep up with as a mom. I collect laundry all on one floor comparing with having to climb stairs to the house's second floor!
In our new home, we use lots of shoe organizers inside of every closet door for more than just shoes—baby items, office items, and medicines. We also have a functional room that serves as an office and gym. Since both my husband and I work from home, we require at least one room to share as an office with fitness equipment fitted into a corner.
While many people choose to downsize for financial reasons, that actually wasn't a factor in our decision. We wanted to be in a lively area with like-minded young families. That was our first priority. Though we may still buy another house in this area at some point down the line, for now, we're thrilled with the concept of renting an apartment. Let me put it this way: We’re not really the “handy” types, so being able to call maintenance(维修)for any repairs is worth every rent coin!
4.What can we learn from Paragraph 1
A.Our old house was upgraded. B.Living in a house has advantages.
C.Our new apartment was downsized. D.Smaller size means more housework.
5.How do the couple feel about the new apartment
A.Confused. B.Amazed. C.Tired. D.Challenged.
6.Why do the couple make changes to their new home
A.To build up their body. B.To create a home office.
C.To enlarge all the rooms. D.To make full use of space.
7.What is the couple’s first concern when moving
A.Transportation. B.Neighbourhood.
C.Repair work. D.Money.

Asian short-clawed otters (水獭) can teach each other how to solve puzzles to get food, according to a new study that took place in England. The research also showed that these cute animals have a good long-term memory —they could remember how to solve the puzzles even after several months.
Scientists from University of Exeter observed groups of Asian short-clawed otters in different places. They gave each group a selection of transparent (透明的) containers with meatball treats inside. Each box could be opened by twisting or pulling a particular lid or handle.
To get the food, the otters had to solve the puzzle of how to open the containers. The otters had two attempts at the puzzle several months apart. The researchers found that if one otter cracked the puzzle, its closest friends quickly solved it, too. The findings provide evidence of “social learning”—animals can learn from each other.
The scientists also found that on average the otters solved puzzles 69% faster the second time. It means that they can remember the details of how each puzzle works. “Our study is the first to show evidence of social learning and long-term memory in Asian short-clawed otters, which may be good news in terms of their adaptability and future survival,” said Alex Saliveros, lead author of the Centre for Ecology and Conservation on Penryn Campus in Cornwall.
Saliveros says the findings are important, because Asian short-clawed otters are declining in the wild, partly due to overfishing and pollution affecting the crustaceans and small fish they feed on. The discovery that the otters are able to find food in new ways and to pass on that knowledge toothers could be significant to their long-term survival.
8.What task did the scientists set for the otters
A.Separating one container from another. B.Finding ways to break the containers.

A.Asian short-clawed otters love puzzles B.Puzzled otters learn from each other
C.Pollution reduces otters’ food D.Animals can pass knowledge

The decision by teachers at a Quebec school to replace Mother’s Day events with a celebration of parents has led to discussions all the way to the provincial legislature (立法机关), but supporters say such moves can benefit children. The school service centre said the teachers made the decision —which was announced to parents by email — because several students in their classes don’t have a mother or father.
Bernard Drainville, Quebec Education Minister, said he doesn’t want to see Mother’s Day and Father’s Day disappear from Quebec schools but understands that sometimes, teachers have to adapt to the realities of their students. “Honestly, I can’t believe I’m in front of you today to stress the importance of Mother’s Day and the importance of Father’s Day,” he told reporters in Quebec City Wednesday. “The idea of replacing Mother’s Day or Father’s Day with Parent’s Day, I don’t think that is a good idea.”
Manon Tombi, a Montreal mother of two who lost her husband to cancer in 2020, said she sees the good wishes behind the school’s move. Tombi, 32, said it can be awkward for workers at her five-year-old son’s daycare when it comes time for children to make Father’s Day crafts. “Making the celebration about parents rather than the mother or father is more inclusive,” she said. “It avoids the discomfort for those children who don t have a father or a mother.”
Rachel Langevin, a professor at McGill University who studies childhood trauma (精神创伤), said for some children, a classroom celebration of Mother’s Day could be difficult. “In the context of a child that recently lost a parent, it could be re-traumatizing, to have a celebration of Mother’s Day for a child that just lost their mother,” she said. “Over time, they may well be able to take part in a Mother’s Day celebration again, as they process through their own trauma.”
12.Why did teachers decide to change a mothers’ to a parents’ celebration
A.To build a more inclusive environment for children.
B.To follow a new provincial education policy.
C.To teach children to respect their parents.
D.To greatly satisfy parents’ requests.
13.What was Bernard Drainville’s attitude to celebrating Parent’s Day
A.Supportive. B.Disapproving.
C.Doubtful. D.Indifferent.
14.What did Manon Tombi think of celebrating Parent’s Day
A.It would make children without a mother or father less uncomfortable.
B.It would be more popular than celebrating other traditional holidays.
C.It would be less commercialized than celebrating Mother’s Day.
D.It would be more in line with her own preferences.
15.Why might a classroom celebration of Mother’s Day be difficult
A.It leads to lasting trauma and sadness.
B.Children struggle with making Mother’s Day crafts.
C.Children find it too emotional to celebrate their mothers.
D.It can be re-traumatizing for children who recently lost a parent.

My parents ran a small grocery store near my house in San Francisco. They always kept a big box by the entrance where people could donate cans of soup and stuff to our local food bank.
“For some reason, our food-donation box just isn’t filling up lately, ”said my dad. “Maybe it’s time to think of a way to remind folks about the food bank, ” replied my mom. We talked about having fireworks, but Mom smilingly said it was a little outside our budget. Dad suggested a talent show because it was fun and people could pay for tickets with food donations. We all gladly agreed.
Word for the talent show got out. While my parents posted information online about the event, we kids made some signs. My friend Mareya came over to help out. “I’d like to do an act in the show, but I don’t know what to do, ” I told Mareya. “Well, since the food-bank thing is about sharing, ” said Mareya, “Why not write a song about that ” I told Mareya that writing a song was not a problem. But I’d be too nervous to sing it. Plus, I didn’t think I was good enough! She shrugged. “What if we sang it together ”
Since Mareya had the world’s prettiest voice and also happened to play the guitar, I agreed. The act would be a huge success. You wouldn’t believe how many people came by the store over the next week to sign up to perform: dancers, Hula-Hoopers, banjo players, comedians, poets, and a boy who did tricks with his adorable poodles Salt and Pepper!
Mareya and I practiced and practiced, and I was feeling pretty good about our act. But on the morning of the performance, Mareya called with bad news. She had a serious stomachache and was not in any shape to perform.

根据文章第一段“Like most couples, my husband and I dreamed of becoming homeowners. Sure, apartment living comes with its own set of advantages—less housework, shared comfort, less to clean up and care for, and usually cheaper rent. As a result, we decided to downgrade from our neat five-bedroom, 2,700-square-foot house on the water to a three-bedroom, 1,369-square-foot apartment, with two kids.”(像大多数夫妻一样,我丈夫和我都梦想着拥有自己的房子。

That also makes it so much easier for me to keep up with as a mom. I collect laundry all on one floor comparing with having to climb stairs to the house's second floor!”(我们一到新公寓,就惊讶地发现一切都还算顺利。

下文“When you work with coaches, trainers, and teammates to win games and achieve goals, you’re learning how be successful.
根据下文“Playing sports can reduce stress and help you feel a little happier.”(运动可以减少压力,帮助你感觉更快乐。) A项“Exercise cuts the pressure.”(运动减少压力)切题。故选A。

61.In modern life, the Internet has become an important part. We can quickly search for knowledge, news, and educational resources. However, the Internet also has drawbacks. There is a lot of false information online, which may mislead us. Additionally, excessive use/overuse of the Internet can lead to addiction, affecting our study, work, and even physical and mental health.
In modern life, the Internet has become an important part.。
We can quickly search for knowledge, news, and educational resources.。
There is a lot of false information online, which may mislead us.
“此外”译为副词additionally,“过度使用网络”处理为名词短语作主语,可译为excessive use of the Internet,其中形容词excessive作定语,表示“过度”,use为名词表示“使用”,of the Internet为介词短语作后置定语,修饰use。这部分也可直接译为overuse of the Internet。“会带来”译为can lead to作谓语,“沉迷”用名词addition作宾语。“影响我们的学习、工作,甚至身体健康和心理健康”可处理为现在分词短语作伴随状语,这部分译为affecting our study, work, and even physical and mental health,其中“身体健康和心理健康”采用合译法,即在名词health前使用两个并列形容词physical和mental,共同作定语修饰heath。所以整句翻译为:Additionally, excessive use/ overuse of the Internet can lead to addiction, affecting our study, work, and even physical and mental health.。
In modern life, the Internet has become an important part. We can quickly search for knowledge, news, and educational resources. However, the Internet also has drawbacks. There is a lot of false information online, which may mislead us. Additionally, excessive use/overuse of the Internet can lead to addiction, affecting our study, work, and even physical and mental health.
62. Para 1: “There’s no way I’m going on without you,” I told her. But Mareya insisted that I should perform alone. “You’ve practiced so hard, and the song is beautiful. The audience will love it,” she encouraged me. Though my heart was pounding, I decided to give it a try. As I stepped onto the stage, the spotlight felt blinding, and my hands trembled. I took a deep breath and began to sing. To my surprise, the audience started clapping along, and their smiles gave me the courage to continue. By the end of the song, the room erupted in applause. I couldn’t believe I had done it!
Para 2: Once I was off the stage, ashamed, my mom wrapped me in a big hug. “You were amazing!” she said, her eyes shining with pride. I told her how nervous I had been and how I almost didn’t go through with it. “But you did, and that’s what matters,” she replied. Just then, Mareya called again. She had been listening to the performance over the phone and was thrilled. “I knew you could do it!” she exclaimed. The event was a huge success, and the donation box was overflowing with cans of soup and other items. I realized that sometimes, stepping out of your comfort zone can lead to something truly special.
