Have you ever heard of a Tesla car Although you may be familiar with the name Tesla because of the famous car, you may not be aware that Tesla cars are named after an inventor named Nikola Tesla.
Nikola Tesla was born in 1865. During high school, Tesla was amazed by the power of electricity and wanted to learn more about this wonderful force. It was in the university that Tesla first learned about a dynamo (发电机), which is used to generate electricity. He started to have ideas about how he could make it work better. Tesla worked very hard. It was said he worked from 3 a. m. to 11 p. m. and didn’t take breaks on the weekend.
After university, Tesla worked for Thomas Edison’s power company. Unfortunately, his work with Edison didn’t last long. Instead, Tesla took his ideas to George Westinghouse, who bought his idea for the alternating current dynamo. Direct current is what Thomas Edison used and worked by sending an electrical current one way, but Tesla’s idea was to switch the directions in the sent current. To this day, Tesla’s alternating current is widely used.
Tesla then started his own lab and experimented with ideas that helped pave the way for the x-ray. He also created the Tesla coil, which was later used for sending radio waves through the air or radios and televisions. He went on to create the first hydroelectric power generator.
Tesla continued to come up with new ideas, but most of his designs stayed in his notebooks and he didn’t get a chance to actually build them. In 1937, when he passed away, many around the world mourned his death. Someone was quoted as saying that he was “one of the outstanding intellects of the world who paved the way for many of the technological developments of modern times.”

In the UK there is a type of fitness workout that is taking off. The Green Gym! The first gym was introduced over 20 years ago as a program that combines getting fit with being outdoors and helping to create green spaces. It is run by The Conservation Volunteers (TCV), an organization in the UK whose aim is to bring people together to create, improve and care for green spaces.
The Green Gym especially targets at-risk groups, such as people with mental health problems, physical health issues and isolation. TCV say that their service reduces the demand for health care services by promoting more activities for those weak to preventable illnesses, and social inclusion for those affected by isolation and loneliness.
Christopher Bingham, from Northern Ireland explained how the gym has helped him through a rough patch. “During lockdown I was in a dark period, I was doing nothing with my life. But as soon as the green gym came along it’s really helped me, it’s pulled me out of boredom.” As a result of attending The Green Gym, members saw their physical health increase by a huge 33%. Over a three-month period, members also saw anxiety decrease by 26%, and their feelings of being worthwhile increased by nearly a third!
Green Gyms usually happen weekly, for 3-4 hours per session. Turnout to gym sessions ranges from 6 to 20 people. Don’t worry if you’re interested in joining, for you won’t be doing an intensive workout straightaway! The day begins with a warmup and ends with a cooldown exercise. New volunteers start out on less intensive exercises, such as planting seeds, before moving onto muscle-building exercises, such as moving soil around in a wheelbarrow (手推车).
TCV’s future goal is to be able to have a Green Gym within a 10 minute walk of people’s houses. There are currently 100 gyms, with a plan to increase their number to 600 within the next 5 years!

Elephants call out to each other using individual names that they invent for their fellows, a study said on Monday. While dolphins and parrots have been observed addressing each other by imitating the sound of others from their species, elephants are the first non-human animals known to use names that do not involve imitation, the researchers suggested.
For the new study, a team of international researchers used an artificial intelligence algorithm (计算) to analyse the calls of two wild herds of African savannah elephants in Kenya. The researchers studied elephant “rumbles” (隆隆声) recorded at Kenya’s Samburu National Reserve and Amboseli National Park between 1986 and 2022. They identified 469 distinct calls, which included 101 elephants issuing a call and 117 receiving one. When the researchers played a recording to an elephant of their friend or family member calling out their name, the animal responded positively and “energetically”, the researchers said. But the same elephant was far less enthusiastic when played the names of others. “Unlike parrots and dolphins, the elephants did not merely imitate the call, suggesting that elephants and humans are the only two animals known to invent ‘random’ names for each other. This indicates they have the ability for abstract thought,” senior study author George Wittemyer said.
Names were not always used in the elephant calls. But when names were called out, it was often over a long distance and when adults were addressing young elephants. Adults were also more likely to use names, suggesting it could take years to learn this particular talent.
The researchers called for more research into the evolutionary origin of this talent for name-calling. “Despite our differences, humans and elephants share many similarities such as ‘extended family units with rich social lives’ and ‘constructed by highly developed brains’,” Save the Elephants CEO Frank Pope said, “That elephants use names for one another is likely only the start of the revelations (披露) to come.”
32. What does the study find about elephants
A. They can imitate others’ sound. B. They are similar to human beings.
C. They can invent names for their fellows. D. They are smarter than dolphins and parrots.
33. What is paragraph 2 mainly about
A. Process of the research. B. Analysis of the finding.
C. Significance of the study. D. Assessment of the experiment.
34. What can be learnt about “elephants’ talent for name-calling”
A. It proves to be an inborn ability. B. It aims to extend their family units.
C. It shows elephants’ abstract thought. D. It frequently happens in elephant calls.
35. What is Frank Pope’s attitude towards future research
A. Hopeful. B. Unconcerned. C. Unclear. D. Doubtful.

Catherine was the coolest kid in her class. Whenever she went, she was in the spotlight, with a bunch of kids following her and doing everything she did.
Her classmate, Landy, however, was not in the cool kids’ group. Being the tallest kid in her class, she was laughed at by her classmates, who were always chanting (唱起……歌) “Landy, Landy, long as spaghetti (意大利面).”
Catherine didn’t really like it when the kids chanted “Landy, Landy, long as spaghetti”. But she never told them to stop either, and nor did she ever talk to her. She liked being popular.
One weekend, Catherine went over to visit her grandfather. Her grandfather lives on a farm, where he keeps chickens. While helping to feed the chickens, Catherine noticed a special one. Hidden in the corner, it looked smaller than the others and was almost half-bare!
“What’s the matter with it ” She asked her grandfather, with a puzzled frown on her face. Her grandfather told her how chickens could act. “They have a pecking (啄) order,” he explained, wrinkles of concern spreading around his forehead. “If one chicken is different, the others will push it away and keep pecking it. Sometimes they peck it so much that it dies.”
“Oh, what a poor little thing!” Catherine let out a sigh as she picked the frightened chicken up in her arms, whose heart was beating fast in the bony little body. Suddenly, she thought of Landy, the girl being “pecked” by her classmates. “I’m going to take it home and take good care of it,” she said with a determined look.
Back in school, Catherine told the cool kids about the chicken. “It’s looking healthy,” she said proudly. “It’s fatter and its feathers are growing. Even the cat likes it. She carries it around, and...” Everyone was entertained by Catherine’s story of her lovely chicken, laughter spreading around the classroom.

A Step Out of My Comfort Zone
Good morning everyone!
Last year, I joined the school speech contest despite my fear of public speaking. Standing on the stage, my hands trembled and my voice shook at first. But as I shared my story about overcoming challenges, the audience’s encouraging smiles gave me courage. Gradually, my nervousness turned into confidence.
This experience taught me that growth begins when we dare to try. Stepping out of my comfort zone wasn’t easy, but it helped me discover my hidden potential. Remember, every small step forward can lead to a brighter version of yourself.
Thank you!

Then Catherine spotted Landy seated alone in a corner. She ducked her head with her eyes fixed on the floor as usual. It hit Catherine that the pecking order worked in school, too. Landy was just like the poor little chicken, being teased and ignored by her classmates, merely due to her special height. “It’s high time to do something for a change.” Catherine thought to herself. Having made up her mind, she urged the rest cool kids to make peace with Landy. Astonished at what she said, all the kids burst out screaming, “Talking to the long spaghetti Are you crazy ”
But Catherine walked directly toward Landy, no matter what they said. “Landy, sorry about the spaghetti thing. I should have realized it earlier. Can you forgive us ” Catherine murmured an apology, her face reddening. She figured Landy might just walk away. But she lifted her misty eyes and nodded yes. Catherine wiped away her tears, giving her a warm hug. Moved by the scene, the other kids also came to offer their sincere apologies to Landy. From that day on, no one made up silly chants about Landy, and Catherine also learned that everyone should be treated equally no matter how special he or she was.
