More recently, I had the same struggles as everyone else with social media. I’m not sure precisely how many hours I’ve spent carefully composing replies to obvious trolls (恶意挑衅的帖子) or worrying about life because I’m being force-fed the opinions of the worst people in the world. Worse, nothing seemed to keep me away: I could set myself time limits, use blockers, delete my accounts, but somehow, I would keep slipping back, spending the last 20 minutes of every evening despairing about the state of the world.
Eventually, I had an idea. In nutrition circles, there’s a strategy called “crowding out” your diet: adding in more and more healthy food until there’s simply no room for the junk. Eat four eggs at breakfast and an apple as a morning snack, and a mid-morning creamy cookie won’t cross your mind. I decided to do the same with books: by committing to reading for two or three hours a day, I would leave myself with no time for online storms.
But I found Jane Austen was my Mount Everest when I kicked off with her Emma. I had to force myself through the first two chapters: page after page of character names, relationships and complex asides (旁白), and... I’ve always been a pretty good reader, but there’s a difference between reading the latest pop-sci bestseller and truly understanding the 19th-century great. Not long after that, though, something clicked. Suddenly I was... enjoying Austen.
So, it worked. These days, if I get anxious after 10:00 pm, it’s about the injustices of the Victorian time, rather than the micro plastics in my water bottle or any annoying pile-on I read online. Nowadays for a happy hour or so before bed, I get thoroughly lost in the cares of someone who lived a century or more ago.
4. What did the author struggle with recently
A. Inability to identify trolls. B. Overuse of social media.
C. Difficulty in servicing an account. D. Anxiety about political issues.
5. What does the author mainly intend to do in paragraph 2
A. Illustrate a practical solution. B. Recommend a dietary approach.
C. Describe a personal experience. D. Explain a philosophical concept.
6. Which best describes the author’s initial feeling about reading Emma
A. It was an easy read. B. It was an escape from reality.
C. It was an uphill struggle. D. It was a rewarding experience.
7. What’s the best title for the text
A. Classics Brings Back Confidence
B. The Necessity to Say No to Trolls
C. Screen to Page: Jane Austen Shows a Way Out
D. A Chance Encounter: Jane Austen Is My Mount Everest

ln 1992, the marbled murrelet (斑海雀) was listed as threatened under the US Endangered Species Act. To find a more effective way of studying the birds, Matthew Betts, an ecologist at Oregon State University, turned to spotted owl scientists. Like marbled murrelets, spotted owls are threatened and challenging to study, and for decades, studying them involved catching the birds and placing rings of metal around their legs. But, in 2017, a team of spotted owl researchers from the Forest Service and Oregon State University began testing something new: monitoring the soundscape of the forest using artificial intelligence. The team put high-quality microphones in place at 150 sites across Oregon and Washington State to see if they could detect the owls from their calls.
In the first year alone, the microphones recorded 150, 000 hours of audio (音频). The team turned the calls into spectrograms — a visual representation of sound waves in which the spotted owl’s call (like that of all species) produces a unique signature. Then, they developed something new: a convolutional neural network, a type of machine learning that could automatically identify and analyze the images.
But the data didn’t only record spotted owls, it also picked up the calls of other species. So, murrelet scientists trained the algorithm (算法) to automatically identify murrelet calls and, thus, detect their presence. Calculating the rate of the calls, researchers could accurately predict areas actively used for nesting — important because it would feed straight into management decision-making for forests.
This marks but the commencement. Matthew Betts’ team, for instance, is expanding beyond the murrelet. The researchers have begun processing audio for 80 species across an area of over one million square kilometers and, in 2023 alone, gathered more than two million hours of sound — a number that’s bound to increase. Working with the start-up Instinct, researchers have begun building processing capabilities into the recording devices themselves; the devices can identify the call of a target animal as it happens, allowing researchers to locate threatened species in real time.
8. How were spotted owls studied before 2017
A. By attaching markers to them. B. By using high-quality microphones.
C. By tracking them with GPS devices. D. By collecting bio-samples for analysis.
9. What makes the new approach effective
A. Images of different species. B. Researchers’ signatures.
C. Length of the recorded audio. D. Species’ unique spectrograms.
10. What might be a consequence of the new approach
A. Precise conservation efforts. B. Sharp rise of bird species.
C. Greater focus on urban wildlife. D. Reduced need for field research.
11. What does the underlined part in the last paragraph mean
A. The data has been misused. B. The research is just the beginning.
C. The project has reached a milestone. D. The new approach is far from perfect.
D
Over the past ten years or so, investigations of ancient DNA have skyrocketed. However, as the pace of ancient DNA research has increased, so have the problems with data archiving (归档). Often, only some of the data obtained in any one study are uploaded to publicly available databases. Furthermore, the associated metadata (元数据) — information on the age of the sample, where it was found, how the DNA was gathered and chemically treated, and so on — are frequently incomplete and inaccurate. Here, we set out the nature of these problems.
Earlier this year, some experts assessed what data had been uploaded into publicly accessible databases by the authors of 42 studies of ancient DNA published in 2021, 2022 or 2023 in the journals Nature, Science and Cell. In about half of the papers, researchers archived only those sequences (基因序列) that they had managed to match with a reference genome (参考基因组), leaving no record of the unmatched sequences. This represents a permanent loss of data for more than 3,000 ancient samples analyzed in just these studies.
It might seem that any sequence that does not map to the reference genome is irrelevant. But improvements in computational methods and more complete reference genomes could enable researchers to match such sequences in the future. Also, even if some of the unmatched sequences are not from the species of interest, they could be among the most interesting in the data set, especially if they originated from disease-causing microorganism that infected the host.
The study of ancient microorganisms has become a field in its own right, and is transforming our understanding of the history of many infectious diseases. Until 2015, for instance, historians thought that plague, a disease known for its high infectivity, emerged as a significant human disease only around 1,500 years ago. Analyses of unmatched sequences from ancient human remains have revealed, however, that outbreaks of the plague were occurring 5,000 years ago. Researchers have likewise used studies of unmatched sequences gathered from human remains to clarify the evolutionary (进化的) history of other infectious agents.
12. What problematic archiving practice is presented in paragraph 2
A. Data loss. B. Disordered data.
C. Inaccessible databases. D. Insufficient reference genomes.
13. How does the author develop paragraph 3
A. By summarizing the main findings. B. By describing a process step by step.
C. By comparing two different methods. D. By challenging a common assumption.
14. Why are plague and other infectious diseases mentioned in the text
A. To classify deadly diseases in history.
B. To track the evolution of microorganisms.
C. To provide new insights into disease outbreaks.
D. To illustrate the value of unmatched sequences.
15. What might be discussed in the paragraph following the text
A. Sequencing techniques. B. Metadata inaccuracy.
C Examples of matched sequences. D. History of data archiving.

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Writing was my passion. I had always been the best writer in my class. But then, the balance of my little universe shifted — Ethan transferred (转学) to our school.
Ethan was quiet. He seemed lost in his own world, and the other students didn’t know how to approach him. He was often alone, and it was clear that he felt out of place. I didn’t pay much attention at first. But then came the day that changed everything.
It was a writing class like any other, until our teacher assigned us a creative essay. I dove into my work, confident as always. When it was time to share, I listened politely as my classmates read their essays, but my mind was already racing ahead to the praise I knew would come my way. Then, Ethan’s turn arrived. He stood up, his voice soft but steady, and began to read. His words painted a picture of an old, forgotten library, where time stood still and the pages of ancient books whispered stories of forgotten worlds.
When he finished, the room fell silent. Then, thunderous applause spread across the class. Our teacher’s eyes shone with delight. “Ethan,” she said, “you have a rare gift. With your talent, you’re bound to win the upcoming writing competition.”
The words hung in the air like a challenge. I had always been the star of our literary world, but now, it seemed, a new light had appeared — one that threatened to outshine mine.
That evening, I had a talk with my father. When I finished, he sighed softly and said, “Jealousy is a thief that steals our joy. It’s easy to see Ethan as a rival (对手) , but perhaps he’s just a fellow traveler on the same journey. Instead of pushing him away, why not reach out You might discover that his light doesn’t dim (使黯淡) yours — it only makes the world brighter.” At that moment, I seemed to realize something.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
The next day, I approached Ethan during lunch.

From that day forward, Ethan and I met regularly to write and discuss our work.

Dear Chris,
I’m Li Hua. I’m excited to hear you’re planning an English enrichment course.
I think it would be great if the course focused on practical English skills that we can use in real-life situations, like English for traveling and business communication. The reason is that many of us hope to travel abroad or work in international companies in the future. What we learn in such a course can help us communicate better with foreigners. I believe this course, which combines learning with practical use, will be very popular.
Looking forward to the course!
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节(满分25分)
【47题答案】
【答案】 The next day, I approached Ethan during lunch. I took a deep breath and walked towards the table where he sat alone, his nose buried in a book. “Hi, Ethan,” I said, trying to sound casual. “I really loved your essay in class. It was amazing.” He looked up, surprise flashing across his face. A small smile played on his lips as he thanked me. I then invited him to join me in preparing for the upcoming writing competition. To my relief, he agreed.
From that day forward, Ethan and I met regularly to write and discuss our work. We shared our ideas, gave each other honest feedback, and encouraged one another. His unique perspective broadened my horizons, and I found my own writing improving. When the day of the competition arrived, we walked in side by side, full of confidence. In the end, we both won awards. It was a moment of pure joy. Father was right: Ethan’s light didn’t dim mine — actually, it made mine shine brighter.
