Kieng Riven’s eight birthday was fast coming up so his mother asked him what he wanted. She expected the youngster to answer with a list of toys and games. His answer took his mother by surprise and brought her to tears.
A child’s birthday is usually spent doing fun activities, eating cakes, opening gifts surrounded (包围) by family and friends. Young Kieng had a different idea of how he wanted to spend his big day. Instead, he wanted to gift his community by handing out a dozen pizzas to homeless people living in a “tent city” in Charlotte, NC.
Antiqua, hoping to make good on her son’s birthday request, shopped around neighbourhood pizzas to see which of them could quickly fill a large order of 100 pizzas. She received only one reply to her request. To her shock, one charitable store manager of a local Papa John’s, named Gage Lock not only agreed to accept the order, he also provided a donation of 75 of the pizzas. Gage and his staff (工作人员) also delivered the pizza pies to the “tent city” in order to personally help give away them to the homeless population there.
“That made me want to do it so much more, knowing it was a 7-year-old kid, and all he wanted for his birthday was to give back to the community,” replied Gage describing his purpose to join in the unusual birthday pizza party. Another local pizzeria chipped in (捐钱) to help hand out the pizza safely while all wearing masks. Kieng’s friends and family also joined in to help pass out the slices with a side of kindness, making it one very memorable birthday.
“It is infectious; it makes you want to be kinder” said one of the happy receivers of the present of goodwill.

We live in an era, where a vast ocean of information is available immediately, and the question arises: can one learn too much Because no individual can grasp the entirety of human knowledge. However, there exists a phenomenon where too much learning can lead to inaction, a state of being flooded with too much information.
Consider a situation where you’re eager to achieve a particular goal. You begin by conducting lots of research, diving deep into the subject. As you absorb more information, it paradoxically (矛盾地) feels like your understanding weakens. Each new concept or strategy reveals further layers, making the goal seem more complicated and out of reach.
This situation is a common trap: the endless pursuit of more information. Although gaining comprehensive knowledge is valuable, that is to say there’s nothing wrong with learning a lot, issues arise when this pursuit affects practical application. If learning continuously prevents you from starting, you’ll find yourself stuck, unable to achieve your desired outcomes.
A more effective approach to achieving goals is to strike a balance between learning and doing. Gather necessary information and then shift into action quickly, even if you feel somewhat unprepared. This is often the best way to learn, as hands-on experience provides insights that theoretical knowledge alone cannot.
The comparison with a baby learning to walk is a good example here. A baby doesn’t learn to walk by sitting and analyzing the process. Instead, it learns by attempting to walk, falling, and then understanding from each fall what works and what doesn’t. Through repeated effort, walking is eventually mastered. This method applies to goal achievement too. By engaging in action, learning from the outcomes, and adjusting accordingly, you gradually move closer to your goals.
In summary, while the pursuit of knowledge is valuable, it’s crucial not to let it become a barrier to action. Learning should be a stepping stone to doing, not an end in itself. It’s through the interaction of gathering knowledge and applying it that we can truly progress towards our ambitions.
8. What stops people from achieving the goal
A. The confusion caused by too much information. B. The inability to find relevant information.
C. The distraction caused by unrelated tasks. D. The desire to learn basic concepts or strategies.
9. How do you achieve goals effectively according to the text
A. Sticking to continuous learning. B. Gaining as much knowledge as possible.
C. Taking practical action without delay. D. Focusing more on theoretical knowledge.
10. Why is the example “baby learning to walk” mentioned in paragraph 5
A. To compare different learning styles.
B. To illustrate learning through action and experience.
C. To show the significance of making mistakes.
D. To emphasize the necessity for parental guidance.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. The Process of Absorbing Information B. The Harmony of Learning and Doing
C. The Pursuit of Advanced Knowledge D. The importance of Hands-on Experience
D
Over the past 50,000 years, at least 161 kinds of mammals (哺乳动物) were driven to extinction (灭绝) during this period. The largest of them were hit the hardest — the megaherbivores, weighing over a ton. Fifty thousand years ago, there were 57 kinds of megaherbivores. Today, only 11 remain. These remaining 11 kinds have also seen extreme reductions in their populations, but not to the point of complete extinction.
A research group from the Danish Aarhus University now concludes that many of these lost kinds were hunted to extinction by humans.
Jens-Christian Svenning, a researcher, says, “Early modern humans were effective hunters of even the largest animals and clearly had the ability to reduce the populations of large animals. These large animals were and are particularly easy to die out because they have long gestation (妊娠) periods and produce very few babies at a time.”
The study shows that human hunting of large animals such as mammoths, mastodons, and giant sloths was widespread and continuous across the world. It also shows that the animals went extinct at very different times and at different rates around the world. In some local areas, it happened quite quickly, while in other places it took over 10,000 years. But everywhere, it happened after modern humans arrived, or in Africa’s case, after cultural advancements among humans.
The researchers point out that the loss of large animals has had deep ecological (生态的) effects. Large animals play a central role in ecosystems. Their disappearance has resulted in great changes in ecosystem structures and functions.
“Our results show the need for active protection and restoration efforts. By reintroducing large mammals, we can help restore ecological balances and support biodiversity, which developed in ecosystems rich in large animals,” says Svenning.
32. How many kinds of megaherbivores are there today
A. 161. B. 57. C. 11. D. 0.
33. What made the large animals easy to be extinct
A. Their long life. B. Their few babies. C. Their slow growth. D. Their special diet.
34. What does the fact that the species went extinct at different times and rates show
A. There were no large animals left in some areas.
B The environment in different areas was the same.
C. Human hunting was not the only cause of extinction.
D. Large animals could adapt easily to different conditions.
35. What’s Paragraph 5 mainly about
A. The importance of large mammals in the food chain.
B. The historical process of human hunting large mammals.
C. The need to stop human activities to protect large mammals.
D. The far-reaching effect of the extinction of large mammals on the ecosystem.

One Sunday morning, a high school student named Lily was wandering in the school. The sun shone brightly through the leafy trees that lined in the school courtyard. A gentle breeze wafted (吹送, 飘送) through the air, carrying the distant sounds of laughter and chatter from other students. It was at this peaceful and joyful moment that Lily saw a wallet lying on the ground. “Whose is it ” Lily said to herself. She picked it up and opened it, seeing a large amount of cash accompanied by important documents and ID cards.
Doubt and confusion began to consume Lily. “What should I do Should I keep the money for myself I can buy many things I’ve wanted for a long time.” she thought. The trees around her seemed to swing together, as if mirroring the chaos within her thoughts. “But if I took it, I’d be going against my values and breaking the trust others have in me,” a voice within her whispered urgently.
A knot formed in Lily’s stomach as she weighed the pros and cons, her thoughts racing. The blue sky above seemed to laugh at her confusion, offering no answers or respite (喘息) , which reminded her of the difficult choices she faced.
To make matters worse, just as Lily was about to hand the wallet over to the school administration, her phone rang, which was from her sick grandmother. “Hi, Grandma, what’s up ” Lily asked worriedly. “The doctor advised me to be hospitalized.” her grandmother replied. This added an extra layer of complexity to her already disordered thoughts. “Can I use the money to help Grandma ” Lily considered.
