Recycling is good for the environment.It can also benefit a community in suprising ways.Mateo Lange, 15,knows this well.On weekends,you'll find him sorting through glass and plastic botles and aluminum cans in his hometown of Indian River,Michigan,where he leads a community recycling program.
Mateo launched the program in 2020.At that time,he was 1l and in the sixth grade,playing baseball wih the Northern Michigan Cyclones.The team was new and needed money to travel to tourmaments.Mateo pitched a plan.
"There were always cans and bottles thrown around the road,"Mateo says.In Michigan,these cans and bottles can be collected and redeemed for cash.With his dad's help,Mateo started a botle and can drive.It raised $7,500.“We built up so much money in the span of just a few weeks,"he says.“So,I said,'Why don't we keep this going as long as we can '”
Since then,his recycling effort has raised $350.000 and helped at least 50 local youth groups.It has also prevented more than 2 million botles and cans from littering the roadside and polluting Michigan's lakes and rivers."It's kept our community a lot cleaner,"he says.
Mateo and his dad also did pickups.They would knock on the door,asking for pickups,grab the bags and haul them to trucks.Then they'd retum them directly to the beverage distributors for reimbursement (补偿)."It was actually a lot of fun,"he says,“especially in the summertime."

They are dying mainly because of human acivity.Ship collisions threaten whale populations worldwide,killing up lo 20,000 individuals annually.With global ocean traffic forecast to rise by at least 240%by 2050,the problem will be severer.But a new movement is using technology to fight back.A Califomian strike-prevention program expanded operations across North American waters.
Whale Safe was launched in 2020,after the number of whales killed by collisions in Califormia reached a record high of 14.Callie Leiphardi,the scientist leading the project al the Benioff Ocean Science Laboratory,says that for every killed whale found,ten more are thought to die unrecorded.That so many were dying despite voluntary speed limits suggested more robust interventions were needed.The team reasoned that by alerting ships lo whales,and publicizing which shipping companies ignored the speed limit,they might increase compliance and bring down deaths.
Their approach rests on listening for whales underwater using microphone-equipped buoys( 浮 标 ) capable of separating low-frequency whale calls from the ocean's background noise.Screened delection resuls are then fed into Whale Safe's alert tool,alongside sightings and model-based predictions,to tell nearby skippers lo slow down.The team then monitors ships'speeds within established slow zones via a widespread GPS-tracking syslem and awards parent companies marks from A to F,visible online.With his week's expansion lo the east coast,Whale Safe will assess companies acrossall slow zones in North America.

John Hartwig at the University of Califormia,Berkeley,and his colleagues had previously developed a process that broke down waste plastic into its constituent parts,but it relied on the expensive metal catalysts(催化剂).Now,his team has discovered an improved process that works on both polyethylene, from which most plastic bags are made,and polypropylene,which is used to make harder objects.And it relies only on catalysts considered so common that they are essentially“dirt”,says Hartwig.
In experiments,the team used two catalysts to turm a mixture of polyethylene and polypropylene into original chemicals for plastic with the efficiency of nearly 90 percent.However,Hatwig warns that there are still many hurdles to overcome,and that the process has only been tested in the presence of a small number of common additives(添加物)."There will be additives that will affect the catalysts,"he says. This may mean having a way to separate those additives or finding catalysts that are resistant to them.
