My wife and I recently completed a day-long tour of the Great Wall with Jessie. In addition to being very knowledgeable about the history of the areas that we toured, she spoke excellent English and was able to answer all of our questions. Her driver was very experienced and polite, and we really enjoyed being able to have a customized tour that avoided the tourist traps and forced shopping that seem to be a part of the larger group tours.
The attractions themselves were fantastic. I was a little worried that the snowy weather might impact our trip to the Great Wall, but everything went fine, and there weren’t many people out at all that day. I suggest wearing strong shoes—the Great Wall is really a hike. And in snowy or rainy days, the surfaces are pretty slippery (滑的)! Seeing this area in winter was really unique, and the snow made for great pictures. Jessie kept us entertained with stories and facts about the construction of the Wall, and always pointed out great spots for taking pictures. Even though she’s in fantastic shape, she cared about our level of fitness and often stopped to let us catch our breath.
When we got back to our hotel, Jessie gave us a great recommendation for dinner and some tips for our planned stops the next day. If I find myself in Beijing in the future, I will certainly be contacting Jessie for more tour opportunities, and I’ve already recommended her to some friends who are visiting the area later in the year. I can’t say enough about how kind and knowledgeable she was, and she really gave us a great tour experience.
24. What can we infer about Jessie
A. She is a tour advisor. B. She is a tour guide.
C. She is a foreign traveller. D. She is a skilled driver.
25. When did the writer visit the Great Wall
A. In spring. B. In summer. C. In autumn. D. In winter.
26. What did the writer think of his tour
A. Adventurous. B. Disappointing. C. Satisfactory. D. Improvable.
27. What is the probable title for the text
A. A Wonderful Tour Day with Jessie B. An Extraordinary Tour Company
C. The Great Wall, an Excellent Attraction D. Jessie, a Kind and Knowledgeable Guide
C
When I was ten years old, I went to the US to visit some family friends. We travelled all the way from California to Las Vegas. I noticed something funny about the way everyone spoke English. I was thinking, “This is the way they speak in films!”
At the beginning of the holiday, one of my friends asked me if I wanted to order “French fries.” I couldn’t imagine what French fries were. What was fried and French ! Snails Cheese She was amazed that I had never tried them and she ordered a portion for us to share. When the waiter brought us some chips, I asked her where the French fries were. She pointed to the plate of chips! Later that week she said she was going to buy some “chips” from the supermarket. She came out with a packet of crisps (炸薯片)!
During that holiday we were also offered “biscuits and gravy” with our lunch. This was a very strange idea to me, because in England biscuits are sweet. Gravy is a salty, meat-based sauce. I later realized that “biscuits” in America are savoury snacks. What we call “biscuits,” they call “cookies.”
One day, I saw an “eggplant” pizza on the menu in a restaurant! Eggs do not grow on plants, I thought. What on earth could an “eggplant” be Something eggy and leafy My dad ordered this pizza and it was covered in aubergines (茄子). I asked him where the “eggplant” was. He laughed and pointed to the aubergines. He told me, “They call this ‘eggplant’ in America!”
Although the same “language” may be spoken in different countries, there are likely to be many differences, not just in vocabulary but also in spelling, grammar and pronunciation! I think part of the excitement of learning a language is discovering the differences in how it is spoken in different places.
28. What can we learn from paragraph 2
A. Holiday is a good time to relax. B. French fries are popular worldwide.
C. The waiter provided poor service. D. Chips and crisps are the same food.
29. Where does the author most probably come from
A. America. B. France. C. England. D. Italy.
30. How did the author feel when seeing an “eggplant” pizza on the menu
A. Excited. B. Regretful. C. Anxious. D. Confused.
31. What is the text mainly about
A. Advantages of travelling. B. High-end restaurants.
C. Food and tradition. D. Cross-cultural misunderstanding.
D
Scientists estimate there are millions of trees on earth. I couldn’t believe that those trees can have a healing(治愈的)effect on people.
According to World Health Organization, 40 percent of American adults have at least two chronic(慢性病的)diseases, which include high blood pressure, mood disorders, heart problems and diabetes. According to the International Association of Applied Psychology, lower stress, better moods, better brain activity and even happiness can all be linked to spending time in the great outdoors. That’s why there are dozens of programs that prescribe nature as a potential form of healing. Nature is everywhere.
There are two major theories as to why nature is so good for our brains. The first one is called attention restoration theory. When we spend time in busy urban environments, all the hard edges, traffic, lights and people everywhere really make us have to constantly focus our attention on these things. Whereas when you spend time in nature, it helps restore your powers of attention and reduce that tiredness and bad-temper. The second major theory is called stress reduction theory. So basically, when we spend time in nature after stressful events, it helps us feel better and recover faster.
When I recommended nature for the first time to a patient of mine, he actually just nodded his head and said, “You’re absolutely right. When I spend more time in nature, I feel better.” And so, I think healthcare providers have to get over our own traditional mental views against this new sort of lifestyle, and prescribe something evidence-based, like nature time more often.
This is worth the effort to do. You need to get out of doors and just be surrounded by the greenery and by nature. You’ll feel calmer. You’ll feel less depressed and less anxious. It’s just a great way to deal with the stress of modern life.
32. Which word can replace the underlined word “prescribe”
A. Practice. B. Provide. C. Suggest. D. Explore.
33. What is the function of paragraph 2
A. To clarify a concept. B. To lead in the topic.
C. To make a conclusion. D. To provide evidence.
34. How does nature help people according to the two major theories
A. Refresh oneself. B. Live a better life.
C. Improve urban environments. D. Deal with stressful issues.
35. What can be inferred according to paragraph 4
A. It is not easy to get in nature.
B. Nature treatment is still unpopular.
C. Most patients prefer nature treatment.
D. Doctors usually recommend nature to patients.

When I was a boy, my mom would often let me help her make popcorn (爆米花)to eat while we watched TV on cold, winter nights. Mom made it in the traditional way too. She would take an iron frying pan and light the stove (炉子)under it. Then she would pour in a little oil and add a piece of butter. Next, she would bring out a big handful of corn from the corn grain bag.
Together we would wait until we heard the first corn popping. Then we would take the frying pan and lid and shake them over the fire to keep the popcorn from burning. Shake, shake, shake and pop, pop, pop until the frying pan was full to overflowing. Finally, Mom would empty it all into a huge bowl and shake salt all over it.
After this, we would all sit down in the living room, with Dad in his rocking chair, Nana in her chair by the stove, and Mom, my brothers and I on the sofa. There was always enough popcorn for everyone and Mom even let me eat the corn grains that didn’t quite finish popping.
The funny thing is that I can’t really remember a single one of the programs that we watched on TV on those nights. They all escaped from my mind. What I can remember clearly, however, is the smell of the popcorn, the warmth of the bowl on my leg, the delicious taste of it, and most of all the joy I felt with Mom sitting next to me. I felt so loved, so safe, and so happy. There with my family, all seemed right with the world. We didn’t have a huge home, a lot of money, or even fancy snacks from the store, but we had love and that was all we needed.
Now although we have grown up and have a family, we still have memories of that wonderful popcorn from time to time.

Last weekend, visiting our parents with my brothers, I mentioned the popcorn. We all laughed as we reminisced about those cozy winter nights. Mom’s eyes lit up as she recalled the process, and Dad chimed in with his own memories of the delicious treat. It was as if we were transported back to those simpler times, the aroma of popcorn filling the air once again. We decided to recreate the moment, and Mom led the way, just like she used to. The sound of the corn popping brought smiles to our faces, and the warmth of the bowl in our hands was a pleasant reminder of our childhood.
I suggested we continue the popcorn as a family tradition. Everyone agreed, and we planned to make it a regular event, especially during the colder months. It was a way to keep our family bond strong and to pass down the tradition to the next generation. As we sat together, enjoying the popcorn and each other’s company, I realized how important these moments are. They are the threads that weave the fabric of our family history, creating memories that will last a lifetime.
