NAIROBI—Mirriam Wambui, a 13-year-old student, speaks Chinese with the confidence of a seasoned linguist despite having only two years of exposure to the language. She won the Kenyan Chinese Bridge Competition, ranked sixth in Africa and made it to the top 30 globally at the contest in Tianjin in late October.
“I was overjoyed to win in Kenya,” Mirriam says. Her journey with the Chinese language began through her eldest brother, who traveled to China in 2015 to pursue a master’s degree in Chinese. When he returned to visit their family in Nairobi in 2019, Mirriam was impressed by his fluency in Chinese. “My brother came back with a cellphone I had never seen before, and everything he brought, including electronics, was made in China. I became curious about this country that seemed to produce so much,” she says with a giggle.
Inspired, she enrolled in Chinese language classes two years ago. In May, with only two weeks left, she asked to join the school’s Chinese Bridge team. “My teacher was shocked as I wasn’t initially picked, but I believed in myself and went all out to prepare.” she says.
Her confidence paid off. At Kenyatta University, she wowed judges and won a laptop, trophy(奖杯) and a sponsored China trip. In October, she visited China. “People were so nice,” she says.
Her success inspired peers to learn Chinese. Teacher Charity Atunga says Chinese is the most popular of three options, with 90 of 200 students choosing it. “Support from parents and schools makes it great. Students see benefits like scholarships,” Atunga adds. She herself studied in China on a scholarship and later became a teacher.
Kenyatta University, in partnership with Shandong Normal University, hosts the Chinese Bridge Competition for high school students in Kenya. Through this partnership, over 300 Kenyan students have traveled to China.

It is widely recognized that the human brain, particularly brain cells, functions as the central storage site responsible for storing memories. Nevertheless, a team of scientists has discovered that cells in other parts of the body can also exhibit memory capabilities. This discovery provides a new perspective for further investigation of memory mechanisms.
Nikolay V. Kukushkin from New York University, the lead author of the study in Nature Communications, explains, “Learning and memory are usually linked only to brains and brain cells, but our study reveals that other body cells can learn and form memories too.”
The research aimed to explore whether non-brain cells assist memory by using the “massed-spaced effect”—a learning principle where information is remembered more effectively through spaced-interval study periods compared to trying to learn everything in one long, exhausting session, better known as cramming(考前突击) for a test.
Scientists studied two types of non-brain human cells in a lab. They exposed these cells to different chemical signal patterns, similar to how brain cells receive neurotransmitter patterns(神经递质模式) during learning. In response, the non-brain cells activated a “memory gene”—identical to that of the brain cells when detecting patterns and restructuring connections for memories.
To monitor the process, the scientists engineered the non-brain cells to produce a glowing protein, which showed when the memory gene was on or off. The results showed that these cells could distinguish repeated chemical pulses (imitating brain neurotransmitter bursts) from simply continuous ones. When the pulses were spaced out, the “memory gene” was turned on more strongly and for longer.
Kukushkin says, “This shows the ‘massed-spaced effect’ in action. The ability to learn from spaced repetition isn’t unique to brain cells; it might be a fundamental property of all cells. This discovery opens a new door for understanding how memory works and could lead to better ways to enhance learning and treat memory problems.”

But on this island of around 400 people, located 372miles off the east coast of mainland Australia, the beaches are empty. The secret to that unaffected landscape is a strategy used in very few other places: limiting the number of tourists.
