The Lantern Maker’s Learner
On her 14th birthday, Lin received a heavy box. Inside were bamboo strips (竹片) and silk from her grandfather, a master lantern maker. “Our family art has lasted since 1825,” he said, touching her shoulder gently. “Now it’s your turn to carry on the tradition.”
Lin looked at the materials and felt a mix of excitement and worry. The first week of learning was difficult. Bamboo splinters (竹剌) hurt her fingers as she tried to shape the strips. “Why must I learn this old work ” she cried angrily. Her grandfather didn’t say anything. Instead, he silently lit an old lantern. Its painted rabbit was gathering plants under the moon, just like in the Dunhuang wall paintings. The soft light of the lantern seemed to tell a story of the past.
At the Mid-Autumn Festival, Lin walked through the streets and found children not looking at traditional lanterns. They were more interested in the bright, colorful toys. An idea came to her. She decided to mix the old with the new. Lin cleverly added LED lights, creating dark shapes that moved with the wind. She also programmed the lantern so that touching the rabbit’s foot would start reading a Tang poem. Lin’s “Smart Rabbit Lantern” was a hit. Children gathered around, amazed by the dark shapes and the sound of the ancient poem. At the end of the festival, Lin’s lantern won the first prize. Her grandfather smiled proudly and said, “Tradition is like the moon–it shines brightest when reflecting new light. By adding modern parts, you’ve given our art a new life.”
Lin felt a sense of success. She realized that traditions could be kept and refreshed at the same time. She had found a way to keep the past alive.

On 29 September 2024, something special happened—Earth gained (获得) a “second moon”. Scientists said it would stay around for nearly two months.
A moon is an object that moves around a planet. This “second moon” is actually a small space rock called 2024 PT5. Such rocks usually travel around the Sun. The real Moon is about 3,475 kilometers wide, but 2024 PT5 is only 10 meters wide. It’s too small and dark to see without special tools, but scientists can watch it through large scientific instruments.
NASA’s special sky-watching system (ATLAS) first found this rock on 7 August 2024. By studying its movement, scientists discovered it would come close enough to be caught by Earth’s pull. This pulling force comes from Earth’s size and weight.
The space rock kept moving around Earth until 25 November. After that, it left and continued its trip around the Sun. But this wouldn’t be the last that we saw of the mini-moon, though. Scientists predict it will pass by Earth once more in 2055.
This wasn’t the first time Earth had caught a space rock. Scientists have found similar events before. Space expert Dr. Jenifer Millard told the BBC, “This shows how active our solar system (太阳系) is. There are still many things we haven’t found yet. Actually, we just discovered this rock this year.”
Scientists explained that these short-term “moons” help us study space rocks safely. Although 2024 PT5 won’t hit Earth, watching its movement teaches us how to protect our planet from possible future dangers.
23. What is the “second moon” according to the passage
A. A big round planet. B. A small space rock.
C. A new bright star. D. A special spaceship.
24. When did NASA first find the “second moon”
A. On 7 August 2024. B. On 29 September 2024.
C. On 25 November 2024. D. On 1 January 2025.
25. Why is studying the “second moon” important
A. To learn about the real Moon. B. To build more spaceships fast.
C. To protect Earth from future dangers. D. To find new planets in outer space.
26. Why does the writer write this passage
A. To tell a wonderful space story. B. To teach about the solar system.
C. To explain a special space event. D. To talk about spaceships flying.
D
The WWF has published the first worldwide guide to save the world’s forests. The WWF is an international charity that works to protect nature. Its Forest Pathways (路径) Report explains the condition of the world’s forests and what governments can do to better protect them.
The report centers around the promises made at COP26—a meeting about climate change held in the UK in 2021. At COP26, more than 140 countries, covering about 90% of the world’s forests, promised to stop cutting down trees by 2030. However, the WWF says that this may not be achieved.
In 2022, 66,000 square kilometres of forest around the world were lost. About two-thirds was from rainforests. This is influencing wildlife. The number of animals that depend on forests is falling.
However, the report also shows some success stories in protecting nature. For example, the Khata Conservation (保护) Area in Nepal has grown, providing a home for tigers and other animals. At the same time, in the UK, the Wild Ingleborough project, a partnership between the WWF and the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, is bringing 15 square kilometres of land in the Yorkshire Dales back to its natural state, with forests. Mary Gagen, the person who wrote the report, says, “There are places where countries are dealing with cutting down trees, and we know what needs to be done to help them grow.”
The report includes a list of suggestions for world governments, providing plans to save forests. This includes making rules against cutting down trees stronger, as well as recognizing the rights of local people who live in the forests. There are also some clear ideas for the UK Government, such as introducing environmental rules for food that is bought and sold in the UK, so that none of it hurts forests.
27. What is the Forest Pathways Report about
A It shares stories of local people that live in forests.
B. It tells new ways to plant more trees around the world.
C. It explains the reason for climate change around the world.
D. It shows how forests are and what governments can do to protect them.
28. What does the underlined words “this” in Paragraph 2 refer to
A. The Forest Pathways Report.
B. The number of countries at COP26.
C. The promise to stop cutting down trees by 2030.
D. The meeting about climate change held in the UK in 2021.
29. Why does the writer mention the Khata Conservation Area in Nepal in Paragraph 4
A. To give an example of a place where nature is being protected.
B. To compare the size of Khata Conservation Area to other areas.
C. To show how the Khata Conservation Area has grown in recent years.
D. To describe the types of animals living in the Khata Conservation Area.
30. Which of the following can be the best title of the passage
A. A Meeting on the Climate Change
B. New Plans to Save the World Forest
C. Successful Stories of Stopping Tree Cutting
D. How Forests Are Changing Around the World

I am Li Hua. I am glad to share my speech about “Growth”. I believe growth is like climbing a hill, step by step.
Last year, I joined the school basketball team. At first, I was not good at playing basketball. I felt worried and sometimes wanted to give up. However, with the encouragement of my coach and teammates, I kept practicing every day. Gradually, I improved my skills and became a better player. This experience taught me a lot.
I hope to continue improving myself. Now, whenever I face challenges, I always tell myself, “keep growing.”
