Last Christmas Eve, Devitt Kane and Eric Ramey, two highway maintenance crewmen with the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT), spotted a large trash bag on the shoulder of U. S. Highway 2 near Leavenworth. Inside were tennis shoes and toys, coming out of the torn gift wrapping.
Kane and Ramey brought the bag to headquarters, but nobody had reported the gifts missing. The two made a Facebook post, hoping it would land in front of the right eyes — and Christmas morning was only one sleep away.
“I remember being a kid myself,” says Kane, “so it was like, ‘we’ve got to try to get these back to the family.’”
Ten hours later, Kane was wrapping up for the day, and still nothing. He told the night crew about the find and that someone might be in touch. Any claims could be checked by the names of the kids on the gift labels, which he purposely had left out of the post.
Around 9 p.m., WSDOT’s Madi Voie received a call after crewmen tracked down the owner of lost Christmas gifts. Mary Fenner posted on Facebook that her brother, David Carlile, had lost a bag of kids’ gifts. Voie’s co-workers connected the dots and arranged a meeting. Carlile, unaware the bag had fallen from his truck, spent Christmas Eve trying to replace the gifts before meeting Voie near a ski resort on U. S. 2 at midnight to get them back.
“Working holidays and nights is hard. Being away from your family and having to miss out on all that stuff is really tough,” says Voie. “But being able to make someone else’s Christmas better, I felt really rewarded.”
24.What made the WSDOT workers act quickly to find the gift owner
A.Worrying about the gifts getting lost.
B.Reading a post about the missing gifts.
C.Understanding the gifts’ importance for kids.
D.Wishing to unite with family for Christmas.
25.Why did Kane leave out names in the Facebook post
A.To avoid public attention. B.To confirm rightful ownership.
C.To simplify the checking process. D.To protect the children’s privacy.
26.How did Voie feel after returning the gifts
A.Relieved to finish their task. B.Upset to work on Christmas.
C.Excited about making a difference. D.Regretful about missing family time.
27.What is a suitable title for the text
A.Torn Gifts: A Highway Mystery B.Found Gifts: A Winter Adventure
C.Christmas Miracle on U. S. Highway 2 D.Christmas Gifts Saved by WSDOT Crew

The Mona Lisa, painted by Leonardo da Vinci from 1503-1506, is the world’s most famous painting. Housed behind bulletproof glass in the Louvre Museum, it attracts thousands daily. But when seen up-close, its small size and an ordinary-looking woman may confuse viewers.
Undeniably, it’s a masterpiece. Leonardo’s use of sfumato, his realistic portrayal, and meticulous details show his extraordinary skills. The soft transitions of light and shadow in the sfumato technique not only give the painting a three-dimensional quality but also contribute to the mystery of Mona Lisa’s expression. This innovative approach has had a deep influence on the development of art, inspiring countless artists to experiment with similar techniques in their own works.
Moreover, the Mona Lisa’s composition and the way it captures the essence of the human figure have set a benchmark (标杆) for portrait painting. It has become a source of inspiration for artists across different eras, teaching them the importance of not just representing a physical likeness but also conveying the inner spirit of the subject.
However, its excellence alone can’t account for its fame. External (外部的) factors play a crucial role. It entered the Louvre through the French royal collection. The unknown identity of the sitter added mystery. During the Romantic era of the 19th century, the simple Florentine housewife who may have been portrayed was transformed into a mysterious and captivating (迷人的) figure. Leonardo was also mythologized as a genius then.
The 1911 theft and media craze brought global attention. After its recovery, Marcel Duchamp’s defacement (恶搞) in 1919 started a trend of using the painting in art and pop-culture. Artists like Andy Warhol followed.
Tours to the US in 1963 and Japan in 1974 further raised its status. In conclusion, a combination of the painting’s artistic values and numerous historical, cultural, and chance events have made the Mona Lisa a perfect symbol of art.
28.What does the underlined word “meticulous” in the second paragraph probably mean
A.Thorough. B.Careless. C.Rough. D.Simple.
29.What is the significance of the sfumato technique in the Mona Lisa
A.It makes the painting look more two-dimensional.
B.It just simplifies the expression of Mona Lisa.
C.It was a commonly used technique before Leonardo’s time.
D.It improves quality and adds mystery to the painting.
30.What was the Mona Lisa’s sitter most likely regarded as before the 19th century
A.A mysterious and charming figure. B.An ordinary Florentine housewife.
C.A symbol of the Romantic era. D.A world-famous genius painter.
31.What is the main idea of the text
A.The artistic value of the Mona Lisa. B.The theft and recovery of the Mona Lisa.
C.The reasons for the fame of the Mona Lisa. D.The influence of the Mona Lisa on art.

A private high-tech company has been sending Starlink satellites since 2019 with the goal of bringing broadband Internet to remote parts of the globe. That brought the total number of active Starlink satellites to 3,660, or about 50 percent of the nearly 7,300 active satellites in orbit.
For just as long, astronomers have been warning that the bright satellites could mess up their view of the universe by leaving streaks (条痕) on telescope images as they fly past. Even the Hubble Space Telescope, which orbits more than 500 kilometers above the Earth’ s surface, is vulnerable to these satellite streaks, as well as those from other satellite groups. From 2002 to 2021, the percentage of Hubble images affected by light from low-orbit satellites increased by about 50 percent.
Actually, the number of images partly blocked by satellites is small, nearly 4 percent of images taken between 2018 and 2021 for one of Hubble’s cameras. However, the number of satellites and space debris will only increase in the future. By the 2030s, the probability of a satellite crossing Hubble’ s field of view any time it takes an image will be between 20 percent and 50 percent.
The sudden jump in Starlink satellites also poses a problem for space traffic. Starlink satellites all orbit at a similar distance from the Earth, just above 500 kilometers. And it’s a popular orbital altitude— Hubble is there, and so is the International Space Station and theChina’s space station. If there is some kind of collision between Starlinks, some kind of disaster, it could immediately affect human lives.
By the 2030s, there could be 100,000 satellites crowding low Earth orbit. So far, there are no international regulations to limit the number of satellites a private company can send or to limit which orbits they can take up. The speed of commercial development is much faster than the speed of regulation change. There needs to be the reformation of space traffic management and space regulation generally to deal with these massive commercial projects.
32.Which is the trouble Starlink satellites bring to astronomers
A.They take a half of the active satellites in orbit.
B.They bring the Internet to remote parts of the world.
C.They need too many rockets to get them into space.
D.They disturb astronomers observing space with telescopes.
33.What does the underlined word “vulnerable” in paragraph 2 mean
A.Sensitive. B.Similar. C.Unaffected. D.Reachable.
34.What should be done to keep space safe
A.Forbidding setting up more satellites.
B.Stopping using low Earth orbit.
C.Passing international laws on space use.
D.Developing satellites of private companies.
35.What is the best title for the text
A.Achievements of Starlink Satellites
B.Problems Caused by Starlink Satellites
C.The Development of Private Spaceflight
D.Present Situation of the World Space Industry

第二节 (满分 25 分)
67.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My mother believed in using things up. Last year, our cornfield had a bad harvest because birds feasted on the crops. It was probably then that Mom’s frugality became even more extraordinary. She began keeping everything that seemed useless in the attic-worn-out clothes, old sheets, broken umbrellas, and some other old items. Mom’s favorite saying was “waste not, want not.” My brother Josh and I weren’t sure what that meant until the Affair of the Scarecrow, which, as it later became known, left alasting impression on us.
The story began with a pretty hat that Mom received as a gift to protect her from thesun. However, Josh and I could see that Mom’s frugal nature and fashion sense were in battle. Mom really didn’t want to get rid of the hat -- it was new and had a lot of use left in it -- but neither could she stand wearing it. She tried to take off the fancy decorations, but they were stuck on tight. She’d have to find some other solution.
Josh and I watched as Mom headed upstairs to the attic with the hat. “Waste not, want not,” she called back down. We heard boxes being moved around. Moments later, Mom leaned out, holding a flour bag full of straw, and with a mysterious smile, she placed the hat on it.
“What is that for ” I asked, confused. “A scarecrow!” Mom exclaimed. “But not a good one yet. It needs a strong body to stand firm in the field,” she said with a frown. “And it doesn’t look scary enough,” Josh remarked. I had to admit that Josh, though younger than I was, could sometimes be more imaginative. Josh and I turned to each other, searching for a good idea. Soon enough, Josh’s eyes lit up with inspiration.

66.Dear editor,
I’m writing to recommend my favorite movie, “The Shawshank Redemption”, for your new movie column. This 1994 classic, directed by Frank Darabont, stars Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman. It tells the story of Andy Dufresne, a banker wrongly convicted of murder, and his unwavering hope for freedom.
The reason I love this movie is its powerful themes of hope, friendship, and perseverance. It shows that no matter how difficult life gets, as long as we hold on to hope, we can overcome any obstacle. The performances are outstanding, and the storyline is both touching and inspiring. I believe it's a must-see for all movie lovers.
Yours,
Li Hua

67.Come with me! Josh called out. The next instant, he raced upstairs with lightning speed. I hurried to follow him into the attic, where we began a thorough search. Mom was amused by our excitement when we found the broken umbrellas and used them as the backbone of the scarecrow. After that, we sorted out some old sheets and tied them on. The scarecrow now looked even scarier. We dragged our creation to the cornfield and planted it firmly in the mud, our hearts full of hope.
In the days that followed, the scarecrow stood tall. Serving as a silent guardian, it successfully scared the birds away. Under its watchful eyes, our cornfield flourished this year. To our amazement, Mom’s useless things from the attic had come together to create something extraordinary. As we enjoyed a good harvest, her favorite saying “waste not, want not” echoed in our hearts. The “Affair of the Scarecrow” has taught us the value of creatively transforming seemingly useless items into treasure, making us aware that frugality is a good quality after all.
