Jennifer Egan made her name with her Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, A Visit from the Goon Squad, which was
praised for its changing structure. The Candy House, Egan’s companion to Goon Squad, borrows its structure from
Goon Squad and appears to be part of the trend for fiction based on interventions (干预) in human memory. In
Goon Squad, the characters are trapped in the digital age and long to return to the past; in The Candy House, now
firmly in the brave new world, the characters — many of whom we met in the earlier book — find that they can
return.
But there’s one significant change: where Goon Squad was organized primarily around the music industry,
The Candy House shifts its focus to tech. All the familiar technologies are present. But there’s also a new service,
Own Your Unconscious. This allows users to upload their memories onto a device called the Consciousness Cube,
where they can rewatch past experiences as if they were streaming TV, fast-forwarding through the boring bits or
silencing the sound. They can edit these memories with MemoryShop software. They can also access other people’
s memories in the Collective Consciousness.
The Candy House begins with Bix, who we last met in Goon Squad as a brilliant Black grad student in the
early 1990s. Now it’s 2010, and Bix runs a social media empire. He’s a big noise, a Steve Jobs-like figure as famed
for his style preferences as for his technological work.
But Bix has developed a fear. Like a novelist staring down the follow-up to the book that made him famous,
Bix has become afraid that he won’t be able to make something else as good as his social media network was. He
finds his way forward with the concept called the Collective Consciousness.
We live in an era of unprecedented (前所未有的) access to other people’s minds. Does this access — Egan
asks, through the Collective Consciousness — actually make us better at understanding one another Or are we
better off with the novel to connect with others
It probably won’t shock you that this novel comes down hard for novels as the winning option. Like Goon
Squad before it, The Candy House more than makes its case.
4. What do The Candy House and Goon Squad have in common
A. They center on tech development.
B. Some of their characters are the same.
C. They are organized around the music industry.
D. Most of their stories are related to human memory.
5. What can users do with Own Your Unconscious
A. See into their pasts. B. Upload their new inventions.
第 5页/共 13页
C. Predict their future experiences. D. Change other people’s memories.
6. What can be learned about Bix in The Candy House
A. He is a well-known novelist.
B. He plays an influential role in social media.
C. He is brought into the tech industry by Steve Jobs.
D. He shares his memories in the Collective Consciousness.
7. What is the text
A. A news report. B. An introduction to a novelist.
C. A book review. D. An advertisement for a book.

Clean water might not grow on trees, but the trees might do the next best thing — provide a cheap and easy
way of filtering (过滤) it.
Researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have been able to use wood from tree
branches to filter water both in the laboratory and in the pared to other water filters, the new way of
filtering water gets an edge. This could provide an inexpensive and low-tech alternative to costly methods of
getting clean water in places that need it the most.
In a new study, researchers show that the natural structure of wood from non-flowering plants like pine
provides enough filtration to remove bacteria from water. This method was already proven to work in a lab in 2014,
but now the researchers have found, through interviews with potential users and tests of local water sources, that
the tree-based purification system works just as well in the field in India and that the locals are willing to use it.
The branches of non-flowering plants are built of thin, straw-like tubes called x ylem in the layer of wood
under the skin. The unique structure of the xylem tissue in the branches allows it to work as a water filter because
these channels are connected to each other through porous membranes (多孔薄膜). These membranes can catch
water pollutants, similar to a water filter membrane.
The researchers were even able to extend the shelf life of dry wood filters to around two years by dipping (浸
泡) them in a protective mix of hot water and ethanol (乙醇). To make this potentially life-saving technology be
reachable to those who need it, the construction of the filter is open to the public and instructions can be found on
their website detailing how anyone can try to construct their own wood water filter.
8. What does the underlined “gets an edge” in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Has a limitation. B. Has an advantage.
第 6页/共 13页
C. Faces a challenge. D. Produces an effect.
9. Why does the author mention the example in India
A. To call on people to protect local water sources.
B. To show the consequences of lacking pure water.
C. To explain why water filters are in great demand.
D. To prove the water filter is effective and welcomed.
10. What makes the branches of non-flowering plants act as a water filter
A. They are thinner than other plants' branches.
B They have wide straw-like tubes in the xylem tissue.
C. The tiny holes of membranes can trap water pollutants.
D. The layer of wood under their skin carries plenty of water.
11. What does the passage mainly talk about
A. A unique way of obtaining water from plants.
B. The working principle of tree-based water filters.
C. MIT creates a high-tech water purification system.
D. MIT's wooden water filter comes into practical use.

Even before Molly Johnson-Jones graduated from Oxford University in 2015, she felt professional pressure to
land a “prestigious (享有声望的)” job in a high-powered industry. She says she and her university friends felt there
were professions that carried prestige—particularly the fields of finance, medicine and law. That’s why
Johnson-Jones ended up in investment banking for two years once she graduated, even though it didn’t feel like
quite the right fit.
These kinds of “very traditional industries” have indeed carried prestige, says Jonah Stillman, co-founder of
GenGuru, a firm that focuses on different generations in the workplace. As Gen Z joins the workforce, however,
experts and younger workers say what’s considered a “prestigious” job may be expanding. Some younger workers
do still report making money is prestigious, especially as cost of living shoots up; and working for certain firms or
in specific industries can make a career. But many also place equal stress on other elements, such as values of the
company, flexibility, and freedom from long, intense work hours.
And some data indicates that Gen Z are indeed turning to more meaningful work. April 2023 data from
第 7页/共 13页
LinkedIn of more than 7,000 global workers shows 64% of Gen Zers in the UK, Germany and Ireland now consider
it important to work for companies that share their values. The data also shows these young workers highlight
work-life balance and career growth as top draws for potential workplaces.
This change in Gen Z’s attitude towards work may be in part because mechanisms (机制) behind finding jobs
and seeing other possible career paths are changing, says Josh Graff, managing director of EMEA and LATAM at
LinkedIn. With a greater number of jobs being posted online, “people have so much more access to information
today than we did when we were applying for a job 20-plus years ago … This allows you to have much better
visibility into a wealth of roles,” he says. “That change in the workplace, in the workforce … is leading people to
understand there’s a wider range of options out there.”
12. Why did Johnson-Jones end up in investment banking
A. She had a passion for finance. B. She wanted to make a lot of money.
C. She found herself well suited for the career. D. She felt pressure to take up a highly-regarded job.
13. What is the main point of paragraph 2
A. Making money is still the main concern of younger workers.
B. Gen Zers are not interested in traditional “prestigious” jobs.
C. The definition of a “prestigious” job is changing for younger workers.
D. Short-time work is still considered prestigious for younger workers.
14. What do most Gen Zers in the UK, Germany and Ireland consider important when it comes to work
A. Whether they can have a good job title.
B. Whether they can receive a good salary.
C. Whether companies’ values are in line with theirs.
D. Whether they have enough opportunities to socialize.
15. What may be contributing to the change in Gen Z’s attitude towards work
A. The changing job search methods.
B. A lack of high-paying jobs in traditional industries.
C. A growing stress on companies’ social responsibility.
D. Increased access to information about potential career paths.

Watching a movie can be a magical experience, but do you know that the music in the films we watch has
第 8页/共 13页
always been an important part of creating that magical experience ___16___
The first commercial film with sound came out in 1927. ___17___Even back in the early days of silent films,
most movie theatres hired a musician or a group of musicians to provide music, mostly to drown out the sound of
the film projectors (放映机) and people talking.
As sound-on-film technology developed, composers were hired to create original music for films. Like music
written for an opera, film music serves to advance the story and the action. ___18___ In the same way, a film
composer needs to support the screenplay’s storyline. The music also needs to reflect the screenplay’s mood, which
includes everything from the action on the screen to sound effects to dialogue.
Music has a language of its own. The right piece of music can improve and sometimes even change a viewer’s
ideas of what is taking place onscreen. Most of the time, music is used to stress the action onscreen, improve the
mood of a scene, foreshadow action that is about to take place or even show the emotion of a character. ___19___
But in many instances the emotional power of the visuals would not be as great were it not for the music.
___20___ Ask yourself, “How would this scene feel if the music were different Is the composer trying to tell
me how I should feel Or are they merely pushing me in an emotional direction ”
A. So, how is the film music created
B. Without it, it would be hard to imagine the scene.
C. An opera composer must follow the text of the opera.
D. Usually, composers and filmmakers don’t want to overshadow a film.
E. So the next time you watch a movie, pay close attention to the music.
F. The music in a film makes you cheer for the hero and cry at the drama.
G. Since then, music has been powerfully linked to the movie-watching experience.
