Ernest Owusu was 13 in 1980 when he was given the opportunity to appear in the audience of a BBC
show, and ask Thatcher how she felt about being called the Iron Lady. This encounter re-emerged in a BBC’s
programme recently.
At the time of their meeting, Owusu was on free school meals, living on a public estate in Brixton, south
London, where he and his sister were being raised by their mother Rose, a struggling hairdresser.
Now 57, Owusu looks remarkably similar even with a greying beard. But his life has been transformed.
The father of three is a human resources director, and the first black captain of the Addington golf club in its
110-year history. As a black guy, it is about breaking the glass ceiling.
Speaking in its clubhouse, Owusu describes his rise in social status as a “Thatcherite Journey”. And he
says it began by asking the woman herself. “To this day it still has an impact. My confidence changed from
that sliding-door moment. Something about her connected with me.”
Thatcher told Owusu she enjoyed being called the Iron Lady. “I think it’s rather a praise, don’t you ” she
said, “Because so often people have said to me if you’re in your job you’ve got to be soft and warm and human,
but you’ve got to have a touch of steel.” Owusu recalls the moment, “I just remember her eye contact. She was
answering me, not the camera. She welcomed the question saying you’ve got to be firm in this world. And that
stuck with me.”
After the show was broadcast, Owusu said he became “a little hero in Brixton for a good three months”.
Owusu added, “It all gave me extra confidence. Doors might not have opened so quickly. It was one of those
key moments to make you do things maybe you wouldn’t otherwise have done.”
24. What do we know about Owusu when he was 13
A. He met with Thatcher twice. B. He joined a famous golf club.
C. He hosted a BBC’s programme. D. He lived at the bottom of society.
25. What do the underlined words “sliding-door moment” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Social status. B. Turning point.
C. Important decision. D. Remarkable achievement.
26. Based on the text, what made a big difference to Owusu
A. Others’ treating him equally at work.
B. Others’ voting him a hero in Brixton.
C. Thatcher’s efforts to preserve his dignity.
D. Thatcher’s faith in the necessity of toughness.

Some people think they are immune to ads. They might not have heard of the mere exposure effect — a
psychological phenomenon where we tend to like things the more we are exposed to them.
When we plot the mere exposure effect on a graph with preferences on one axis (轴) and repetitions on
the other, we will see that it takes about 15 repeats for the effect to reach its full potential. If the exposure is
too excessive, people get annoyed. And if they didn’t like the thing initially, repeating it can make it worse.
There are two main explanations for the phenomenon. The first is certainty. Our minds naturally learn to
be careful around new things that could potentially harm us. If we see something repeatedly without bad
consequences, we are led to believe it is safe. The second is perceptual fluency. We are also hardwired to prefer
simple things that take little mental load. Difficult tasks like figuring out something new take lots of attention
and time, which is why we try to avoid them.
Known for discovering the effect was psychologist Robert Zajonc, who tested how subjects responded to
specific symbols. A group of people were shown a series of random shapes which changed so quickly that it
was impossible to notice that some were repeated. When the subjects were asked which shapes they found
most pleasing, they chose those to which they had been exposed the most often, even though they had no
conscious awareness of that.
The results showed that changes in preferences caused by repeated exposures depend not on any prior
subjective and conscious evaluations of the stimulus but rather on results from the objective history of
exposures alone.
Now tell us what you think about ads. If mere exposure to them makes us like things we otherwise
wouldn’t, should billboards (广告牌) be banned from the public area
28. Which of the following graphs best illustrates the mere exposure effect
A. B.
C. D.
29. According to Zajonc’s experiment, what drives changes in preferences
A. Random variation. B. Objective analysis.
C. Subjective judgment. D. Subconscious familiarity.
30. Which promotional activity shows the application of the mere exposure effect
A. A novelist organizes a book signing event.
B. A game studio develops a challenging mode.
C. A singer buys hot recommendations on a music app.
D. A fashion brand reintroduces certain classic designs.

31. Why does the author mention ads at the end of the text
A. To criticize fake advertising. B. To oppose outdoor advertising.
C. To point out the drawbacks of ads. D. To caution against the influence of ads.

Sometimes, what my seven-year-old tabby cat Ophelia wants is obvious. Crying in front of her empty
food bowl at dinner time clearly indicates she’s at risk of starvation. Other times, though, her meows are a
complete and total mystery.
That’s where Sergei Dreizin and Mark Boyes, computer scientists at Akvelon, a software engineering
company based in Bellevue, Washington, say they can help. They are the brains behind the MeowTalk app,
which aims to “give cat owners the best tools available” for interpreting their pet’s needs.
When Boyes and Dreizin were looking for data to inform their new app, they came across 2019 research
that revealed cat meows contain certain shared characteristics. The study authors then built a computer program
to analyze audio recordings of 21 adult cats meowing.
The MeowTalk founders used these audio recordings of tens of thousands of meows to develop their
computer models, which is fueled by artificial intelligence. And it worked. 2021 study found MeowTalk can
classify nine feline (猫科的) phrases with 90 percent accuracy.
The free app records your feline’s meows and translates them into a small range of phrases, such as “I’m
annoyed.” and “Feed me!” Users can rate the accuracy of MeowTalk’s translations, which further improves
the computer model. Launched in November 2020, the app has been downloaded over 20 million times, and
Dreizin estimates that the program has analyzed over a billion meows to date. “We’re the largest depositors of
meows in this galaxy,” he quips.
The app is part of an expanding suite of technologies designed to help us communicate with our furry
friends. Another is FluentPet, which trains your pet to press buttons to communicate a need; for instance, a cat
can learn to press a button that says the word “play”.
Cat behaviorist and communication expert Charlotte de Mouzon isn’t convinced of these products’
accuracy, but strengthening your relationship with your cat is always a wise goal. “If people play with the app,
maybe they will become more attentive to their cats,” says de Mouzon, of Paris Nanterre University.
32. How can computer scientists at Akvelon help cat owners
A. By making cats’ needs fulfilled. B. By getting cats rid of starvation.
C. By filling the empty food bowls. D. By solving the mysteries of cats’ meows.
33. What can be inferred from paragraph 5
A. Users think the app very helpful.
B. Dreizin thinks the app is the most accurate.
C. The program has analyzed billions of meows.
D. Users can help promote the accuracy of the app.
34. What’s Charlotte’s attitude to this kind of apps
A. Cautious. B. Indifferent. C. Positive. D. Worried.
35. What is the purpose of the the text
A. To comment on two apps. B. To compare two similar apps.
C. To introduce an innovation. D. To recommend an app to cats’ owners.

During puberty (青春期), your body goes through many changes, and you start forming a body image
— how you see, think, and feel about your body’s size, shape, and weight, or specific features like your nose.
36 For instance, you may believe your nose is too big or too small, even though it looks perfectly normal.
37 One major influence is peer pressure. Your friends might make casual jokes about your
第 5 页 共 8 页
appearance, or you might compare yourself to them and feel they look better. Such experiences can harm the
way you view yourself. Another powerful influence is the media, which often promotes a narrow, ideal body
type. For example, if fair skin is portrayed as beautiful, you may feel insecure if you don’t match that ideal.
Developing a negative body image can lead to unhealthy behaviors, such as extreme dieting,
overexercising, or even risky plastic surgeries. 38 When you focus too much on appearance, you
may forget to appreciate other great things about yourself, such as your talents and personality.
To build a positive body image, it’s essential to remember that no perfect body exists, as beauty standards
are always changing. Models and celebrities may appear flawless in the media, but much of their appearance
is due to makeup, angles, lighting, and editing. 39
Rather than focusing on appearances, value people for their true selves. By surrounding yourself with
positive influences and avoiding comments on looks, you can redirect your attention from self-criticism.
40 Over time, you’ll build inner confidence and develop a healthier, more accepting relationship with
your body.
A. Many factors shape your body image.
B. It also lowers your overall life satisfaction.
C. However, your true beauty lies within your heart.
D. External judgement can be a double-edged sword.
E. Without these tricks, they are just as “imperfect” as everyone else.
F. Surprisingly, body image is shaped more by your thoughts than by reality.
G. This shift enables you to recognize and celebrate your talents and strengths.

I’d always been told to take care of my older brother, Brian, who was born weak and small. I’d often tie

I was to be a kind of guardian angel (守护天使) for Brian. However, that was not the case.
One day our school sponsored a pumpkin-carving contest. First prize was $100, and I knew just how I
would spend it. There was a brand-new game I was dying to own. So I decided the first place bonus definitely
had to land in my pocket.
When I had to carve the perfect pumpkin I’d picked out, it dawned on me that with my big clumsy fingers
I’d surely screw it up (搞砸). I thought of Brian’s smaller, delicate hands and knew he was the man for the job.
I immediately begged Brian. Unexpectedly, he asked for a cut. That was fifty-fifty. Quickly doing the math in
my head, I figured out even if I split (分摊) the first prize, I’d still have enough cash for the game. So I gave
in to Brian’s demands. With skillful hands Brian carved the perfect face, and now we had the best pumpkin
ever.
Then the unexpected happened: We came in second. Unfortunately, second prize was only $50, and I
needed every penny of that to buy the game. On the day of the awards ceremony, the principal handed over the
money to me because Brian was home, sick with cold.
If he really wanted to win, he would have been here today, I thought to myself, justifying stealing the cash
from under poor Brian’s runny nose. With hardly a thought, I ran to the store and bought my dream game. That
night when Brian asked if we had won, I denied, afraid to look into his eyes.
The whole thing was never mentioned again until the day when Brian was packing for college. I played
my usual role in helping him pack when I came across an old album filled with photos he had taken as the
school photographer.

I was six years old because I couldn’t afford to pay the fees. I ran home crying. But I didn’t give up and worked
harder.
W: What kind of projects do you work on
M: I teach drawing to children who come from disadvantaged backgrounds. I also help children who have been

M: So, what advice would you give to new college students
W: Well, professors expect you to work a lot outside of class. So use a planner. It’s also important to know what
the best time for you to study is. Like, after two years, I finally realized that I don’t do my best work late in the

W: Hello, everyone. As part of this series of lectures on the development of early humans, today we are looking at
rock art.
Rock art is found all over the world, and what is rather amazing, is … Well, let me give you an example. When
our ancestors drew humans, they would often draw them as stick figures, but if they drew a face, then the eyes
were almost always very open and wide. And these drawings were produced by people of totally different
cultural backgrounds.
But I’d like to focus now on the rock art of the early residents of Australia. The images that survive in this part
of the world date back to at least 20,000 years ago. In fact, people in Australia were still practicing this art form
in the late 18th century, when the Europeans began to arrive, and certain images point to the contact between
them. For example, the image that is evidence of European arrival is that of horses, an animal that would have
been very unusual to the Australian landscape.
Um, it isn’t actually known how many sites there are across Australia where rock art can be found, but
unfortunately we do know that much of the art is being lost to us. Since the 1960s, industry alone has destroyed
around an estimated 10,000 pieces of art. In some cases, the art is damaged when ...
