It turns out patience isn't always a virtue.By the time Nalin Kamat was 13,the Toronto teen was well on his way to becoming a working artist. He had already had his first show at a local arts hub, showcasing his series titled Dispositions, charcoal sketches of the human body as a metaphor for his own transformation during adolescence
Yet he wanted more—specifically to start showing his work in a juried exhibition(评审展览),where art experts would evaluate and select pieces in a competitive review process. That's when he hit an obstacle, discovering that the minimum age for submission was 18.
That rejection stimulates his creation."There was a void in the art world, and I thought it'd be really cool if I could provide the opportunity for more young artists,"says Nalin, now 15.With the support of his parents, Nalin founded in 2023 Little EGG Gallery,a commercial studio specially for underage artists. The gallery, which is now profitable enough to break even, charges a small hanging fee for any displayed work and takes a 15 percent commission fee on sales. In turn,Little EGG helps promote young talents by showcasing their work.
Not long after opening,Ontario College of Art and Design University professor and artist David Griffin stumbled upon the gallery while taking a casual walk with his wife in their neighbourhood. An exhibition was being installed at the time, and some of Nalin's own work was on the walls.Upon meeting Nalin,Griffin says he understood that he was speaking with someone special:“a strong young artist with a really excellent idea, which was to provide a space for showing the local community the easy, natural genius of young people."A connection was formed, and Nalin asked Griffin to help judge an upcoming competition.
The first juried show was last spring, and the top three winners each received a $50 cash prize.Five-year-old Jack Gamble won for his abstract painting titled Pokemon.
24.What mainly drove Nalin to start Little EGG Gallery
A.The support of his parents. B.The desire to create his own studio.
C.The wish to offer young artists chances. D.The approval from the local community.
25.What does the underlined phrase"stumbled upon"in paragraph 4 mean
A.Withdrew from. B.Came across. C.Looked around. D.Headed for
26.Which of the following best describes Nalin Kamat
A.Patient and humble. B.Determined and sympathetic.
C.Competitive and cooperative. D.Creative and devoted.
27.What can we learn from David Griffin's words
A.Nalin's uniqueness impressed him a lot.
B.Nalin's idea received wide recognition.
C.Nalin's platform boosted young artists' creativity
D.Nalin's efforts brought about the neighborhood unity.

To find food in the darkness,deep-diving toothed whales rely on their built-in sonar, which bounces soundwaves off potential prey to reveal their location. But to these whales, plastic junk floating in the ocean may also "sound"just like a delicious squid.
A new study suggests plastic debris(碎片)like shopping bags bear remarkably similar "echoes"to those of squid—likely due to some combination of their shape, size, degree of weathering, and chemical composition, the authors write. As it spreads in marine environments,it is also showing up in the guts of marine mammals across hundreds of reported cases, damaging their stomach tissues and causing infection, choking, and malnutrition to the point of starvation.Matthew Savoca,a marine biologist at Stanford University says,"They're in pain, they're starving, but they think they're eating."
For the study, published in Marine Pollution Bulletin,Merrill and his colleagues gathered nine plastic items: bags, balloons, and other common trash found in whales from North Carolina beaches. The research team hit the items with sound waves at frequencies that toothed whales use to hunt. They repeated the process on five dead squid bodies provided by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill,as well as five squid beaks taken from a dead sperm whale's stomach. All plastic items tested, the team found, returned echoes as strong as or stronger than those from the squid.
It's unknown whether deep-diving toothed whales use any means other than echo strength to distinguish food from not-food—but experts doubt it.Mouthfeel certainly doesn't factor in.“They don't really chew and taste like us...it's more like suction,"says Laura Redaelli,a Ph.D student in marine biology.
All three experts agree on the need to reduce plastic production in the first place. The ideal approach, Savoca and Merrill say, involves policy changes and redirecting waste streams from the ocean, especially targeting unnecessary single-use items."Maybe we can hope that,at some point, whales will learn the difference between plastic and prey”,Redaelli says. But until then,"the more plastic we keep putting in,the more animals are going to die."
28.How do deep-diving toothed whales find food
A.By producing soundwaves to attract prey.
B.By using built-in sonar to locate prey in the dark.
C.By telling food from not-food through mouthfeel.
D.By identifying echoes weaker than those from squids.
29.What is the impact of plastic debris on toothed whales
A.It may damage their built-in sonar. B.It may reduce their adaptive ability.
C.It may result in their starving to death. D.It may lead to various infectious diseases.
30.What should be done for marine mammals according to the experts
A.Forbid the production of single-use items. B.Encourage the use of eco-friendly plastics
C.Establish the policy against whale hunting. D.Prevent waste from flowing into the ocean.
31.Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text
A.Toothed Whales Are Eating More Plastic Bags B.Marine Life Is Facing An Alarming Death Rate
C.Polluted Marine Environment Needs More Care D.Plastic Sounds Like Dinner for Toothed Whales
D
Nursing homes have increasingly turned to robots to complete a variety of care tasks.A new study from a University of Notre Dame expert on the future of work finds that robot use is associated with increased employment and employee retention(留住),improved productivity and a higher quality of care. The research has important implications for the workplace and the long-term care industry.
Yong Suk Lee,associate professor of technology, economy and global affairs, was the lead author for the study.“Our research focused on Japan because it is a super-aging society that provides a good example of what the future could entail elsewhere—a declining population,a growing share of senior citizens and a declining share of working-age people,"Lee said."We need to be ready for this new reality."
In a future where there are more senior citizens requiring care, using robots in a targeted fashion could benefit workers and patients alike,Lee said. The study analyzed three types of robots that are increasingly used in assisted living facilities:Transfer robots, which nurses use to lift, move and rotate patients in beds and around rooms. Mobility robots, which patients use to move around and to bathe.Monitoring and communication robots, which include technologies such as computer vision and bed sensors that can record and examine patient data such as movement and share it with care providers.
“We found that robot adoption aids care workers by reducing quit rates. This is important because employee turnover is a big concern in nursing homes.Workers typically experience a great deal of physical pain, particularly in their knees and back. The work is hard and the pay is low.So robot use was associated with employee retention." Lee said,"Robots can improve productivity by shifting the tasks performed by care workers to those involving human touch, empathy and dexterity(灵活性).Ultimately, robots can help workers provide a higher level of patient care."
“This research provides critical insights into how societies can successfully navigate the challenges of caring for aging populations,"Lee said.
32.Why did Yong Suk Lee focus his research on Japan
A.It encourages the elderly care industry. B.It has a sound foundation for robot nursing.
C.Its super-aging society well reflects the trend. D.It owns the most advanced robots in the world.
33.How do the nursing robots improve patient care
A.They offer full-time chat service. B.They monitor patients' real-time data.
C.They provide specific treatment plans. D.They move medical equipment freely.
34.Why does robot adoption reduce workers' quit rates
A.It solves the issue of low pay.
B.It eases their heavy working burden.
C.It helps to treat their occupational injuries.
D.It switches their focus from human touch to technology.
35.What's the passage mainly about
A.Japan's exploration exemplifies the care industry.
B.High quality care for the elderly should be advocated.
C.Nursing robots benefit staff retention and patient care.
D.Robot adoption in nursing requires critical examination.

At a local high school in San Francisco.Mr.Adams was well-loved by his pupils. He taught music, something he was passionate about ever since he was a child.
Not all students were fond of playing musical instruments and singing, but because of Mr.Adams' fun and easy lessons,he instantly became every pupil's favorite teacher. He would teach them how to play instruments and have jamming sessions(即兴演奏)with them where they performed the students' favorite songs
“You know, the key to making the kids love your lessons is to make it relatable to them,”he told his fellow teachers."Once you catch their attention,it'll be easier for them to absorb what you're trying to teach them."
Mr.Adams taught Grade 11 and 12 high school students. Thanks to his fun nature, his students respected him as a teacher but treated him like a friend. They went to him for advice and would hang out with him outside of class to play music and exchange stories.
One day,his students scheduled a day to spend time with him to make the playlist of their upcoming prom.It was such a formal dance that they would spend a lot buying dresses and suits. He was glad to help them and scheduled their session for Friday that week.
However, that Friday,Mr.Adams didn't show up to class for the first time.“I wonder if he's okay,"one student said, worried."He's never been absent before!"
The students waited inside the music room patiently. After a couple of minutes, though, the school director entered the room and said that Mr.Adams would not be returning any time soon.
"I know how much you all love Mr.Adams,so I'm disclosing this information.Last night,a forest fire burned down his house, and he was devastated. He worked hard to put up that house, but he couldn't save it.He was only able to retrieve a few items, but other than that, everything he owned is gone,"she revealed. My View on Technology-Supported Personalized Learning
In the digital age, more learners are applying technology to their learning. However, some are not totally happy with AI lessons, since AI lacks natural responses and can be a little boring.Personally, technology has revolutionized the way we learn, making learning more personalized and accessible than ever before.AI-driven platforms offer tailored learning experiences that adapt to individual needs and preferences.
From my experience, using AI tools to access resources has made learning more flexible and effective.I once struggled with listening comprehension. Thanks to various language learning apps,I could practice listening with materials at any time.Meanwhile, the apps also analyzed my mistakes, allowing me to focus on my weak areas.
In conclusion, technology empowers personalized learning.By embracing technology,we can create a more inclusive and dynamic learning environment, empowering every student to reach their full potential.
第二节(满分25分)
Paragraph 1:"We have to help him!"the student council president said.Instead of holding the music class that day,the school director allowed the students to brainstorm ways they could help Mr.Adams.After an hour, they concluded that they would not be wearing gowns and suits to the prom this year.Instead, they'd go in T-shirts and jeans.“"Let's pool our budget for gowns and suits together and give the money to Mr.Adams,so he can rebuild his house and purchase essential items,"the student council president announced.Everybody agreed to the idea. When the special night finally came, they all arrived at the prom in matching T-shirts and jeans.Mr.Adams had yet to arrive, but he was scheduled to go because he couldn't help but fulfill his promise of being their DJ that night.
Paragraph 2: When Mr:Adams finally made it to the prom,he was surprised to see everyone in casual wear instead of the formal clothes."Did the theme change "he asked, wearing a suit and tie."No,Mr.Adams, the theme didn't change, but we wanted to do something special for someone dear to us,"the student council president said, raising an envelope for Mr.Adams to see.“We're sorry to hear about your house. We hope this amount can somehow help you rebuild what you've lost,"she added.Mr.Adams was genuinely surprised and couldn't help but cry."Thank you, kids. This means so much to me and my family,"he said between tears. That night,Mr.Adams made sure to give his students a once-in-a-lifetime prom experience. He blasted all of their favorite songs and watched them happily dance the night away.It was something they did without regret, because of the mutual love.

Text 9(Q14-1712:55~14:13)
W:Martin, you've played many superheroes in the films. What is the hardest part of playing a superhero
M:Well, you have to be fit to play the role but getting your body in shape isn't the hardest part. It's getting the hang of all that leaping, falling, turning and rolling that's actually the trickiest.
W:So how did you get into acting
M:Id never considered it.I majored in literature at university but was never involved in any drama clubs. After graduating,I was employed by a comedy producer and it just went from there.
W:You grew up in Canada. How was that
M:Great. For my brothers It was more about sports at weekends.I was the only one of my brothers that was interested in the cinema but I wasn't the sort of fan with posters all over the wall.
W:What would you have done if you hadn't become an actor
M:My dad is a police officer,my mother and all my grandparents are doctors.Even so,neither of those jobs appeals to me.My older brother has an import export company and I guess I would have a job with him.
W:Thank you,Martin.
Text 10(Q18-2016:28~18:01)
Hello everyone.Welcome!I've only started this channel this week.So I'm sort of nervous in front of the camera Anyway,I want to share with you everything I know about health.Today I want to talk to you about how to feel younger.I am in my mid fortieth, yet I feel as energetic as I did when I was eighteen. So what is my secret It's not really a secret. It's a combination of exercise healthy eating and rest.Sleep is the most important aspect of all of this. I imagine many of you get around six hours of sleep a night. You might stay up late watching TV,playing video games or just browsing your phone. What I'd suggest is setting an alarm an hour before you go to bed. That alarm is to remind you to stop looking at electronic screens. They produce blue light which can prevent you from going to sleep.I would also suggest not eating or drinking anything two hours before bedtime. If you are restless a glass of milk can help to settle you,but no tea or coffee as they will keep you awake.Lastly, start your day on a positive note with half an hour of exercise. It may not seem like a lot but over time it will dramatically improve your health. Now,if you have any questions, just type them on the screen.
