When I was 27 years old, I left a very demanding job in management consulting for a job that was even more demanding: teaching. I went to teach seventh graders math in the New York City public schools. And like any teacher, I made quizzes and tests. When the work came back, I calculated grades.
What struck me was that IQ was not the only difference between my best and my worst students. Some of my strongest performers did not have excellent IQ scores. Some of my smartest kids weren’t doing so well. And that got me thinking.
After several more years of teaching, I came to the conclusion that what we need in education is a much better understanding of students and learning from a motivational perspective, from a psychological perspective. In education, the one thing we know how to measure best is IQ. But what if doing well in school and in life depends on much more than your ability to learn quickly and easily
So I left the classroom, and I went to graduate school to become a psychologist. I started studying kids and adults in all kinds of super challenging settings, and in every study my question was, who is successful here and why
My research team and I went to a school. We tried to predict which students would stay in military training and which would drop out. We studied first-year teachers working in really tough neighborhoods, asking which teachers are still going to be here in teaching by the end of the school year In all those very different contexts, one characteristic emerged as a significant predictor of success. And it wasn’t social intelligence. It wasn’t good looks, physical health, and it wasn’t IQ. Instead, it was grit.
To me, the most shocking thing about grit is how little we know. That’s the work that stands before us. We need to take our best ideas, our strongest intuitions, and we need to test them. We need to measure whether we’ve been successful, and we have to be willing to fail, to be wrong, to start over again with lessons learned.
How did the author feel about the result of the quizzes and tests
A. Disappointed B. Demanding C. Shocked D. Indifferent
25.What made the author leave the classroom
A. Her inability to teach at school.
B. Her dream to be a psychologist.
C. Her better understanding of education.
D. Her desire to study the factor of success.
26. According to the author, the result of their research is ______________.
A. confusing B. inspiring C. perfect D. measurable
27. What can we learn from this passage
A. Failure is the mother of success.
B. Actions speak louder than words.
C. Nothing is impossible with a willing heart.
D. IQ is the key that unlocks the door of knowledge.

Mosquito-borne diseases such as malaria will become a bigger part of the curriculum at medical schools across Europe in the face of the climate crisis. Future doctors will also have more training on how to recognise and treat heatstroke, and be expected to take the climate impact of treatments into account, medical school leaders said, announcing the formation of the European Network on Climate and Health Education.
Led by the University of Glasgow, 25 medical schools from countries including, the UK, Belgium and France will integrate lessons on climate into their education of more than 10,000 students. Glasgow University’s Dr Camille Huser, the co-chair of the network, said: “The doctors of the future will see a large number of different presentations and diseases. They need to be aware of that so they can recognise them.”
This summer was Europe’s hottest on record and changes in the climate are increasing the pressure on health services. Disease-spreading insects, such as mosquitoes, are expanding their range, aided by changes in temperature and rainfall patterns. Cancer, heart and lung conditions, diabetes and mental illness can all be affected by factors such as extreme weather or air pollution.
Huser said the role of the climate in teaching at medical schools often consisted of a single lecture or module. The network expects it being “infused” throughout teaching.
“Climate change … doesn’t necessarily create a new range of diseases we haven’t seen before, but it worsens the ones that do exist,” Huser said. “Diabetes, for example, is not something that people link to climate change, but the symptoms and complications become more frequent and worse for people in a world where the climate has changed.” Also, due to climate breakdown, pathogens(病原体) evolve so existing drugs no longer treat them effectively and Huser said this should be reflected in teaching.
Students will be taught to advocate for active travel-walking or cycling rather than driving-and “green prescribing”, where patients are encouraged to take up activities such as community gardening and tree planting. Both activities offer health benefits to individuals while being positive for the environment. “Encouraging people to look after their health had huge benefits for them personally,” Huser said, and would “reduce emissions if they require less input from the health system”.
The network will also attempt to influence bodies that set national curriculums, such as the General Medical Council in the UK, so that the climate crisis becomes a mandatory part of all doctors' education.
Huser’s co-chair, Prof Iain McInnes, also of Glasgow University, said the network’s aim was “building the conversation into medical curricula so that the doctors of the future are well-educated in this conversation. This is as crucial and critical to their thinking as it is to manage obesity, smoking and other environmental challenges. It is simply part of the DNA of being a doctor.”
28.What does the underlined word “infused” in Paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Changed. B. Integrated. C. Removed. D. Decreased.
29.What can we learn from the passage
A.Some existing diseases are likely to get even worse because of climate change.
B.The role of climate has always been a significant part in medical school teaching.
C.Mosquito-borne diseases are decreasing due to advancements in medical treatments.
D.The network aims to make climate crisis a must for all doctors’ education worldwide.
30.Which would be the best title for this passage
A.Medical Students Preparing for a Greener Tomorrow.
B.Innovative Approaches to Medical School Curriculum.
C.Climate Crisis to Be Bigger Part of Medical School Training.
D.The Future of Medical Education in an Increasingly Changing World.

“My morale(精神面貌)for this job is gone, gonna totally check out,” an Amazon worker recently wrote on an online forum. The cause of his discontent was a letter sent last month by Andy Jassy, the tech giant’s boss, that ordered staff back to the office five days a week. The order has caused dissatisfaction among Amazon’s office drones, who had previously been required to show up in person only three days a week.
Amazon is not the only big company that has cut down on remote work. More are set to follow. A recent global survey found that four-fifths of bosses expect a return to the office five days a week within three years.
Requiring a return to the office tends to annoy staff. A survey by Gartner, a research firm, found that a third of executives and a fifth of other employees would leave their jobs if they were forced back to the office. For some companies, that maybe the point. Many tech firms and consultancies hired too many workers during the Covid-19 pandemic boom. Getting some of them to leave voluntarily would reduce severance costs—though it also risks pushing talented employees to join rivals.
The more likely explanation is that many bosses believe having employees in the office leads to better performance. Plenty of studies now suggest that remote employees are less productive. One paper that looked at data-entry workers in India found that those consistently working from home were 18% less productive than those consistently in the office.
There is less evidence, though, that letting staff work from home a couple of days a week in a hybrid arrangement has a negative effect on performance.
Some bosses are concerned that hybrid work will spoil their company’s culture. In his letter, Mr Jassy wrote that Amaz’s culture “has been one of the most critical parts of our success”, and that “it’s easier for our teammates to learn, model practise, and strengthen” it when working together in the office.
For now, investors seem to be withholding judgment. A study published in April by Sean Flynn of Cornell University and two co-authors looked at 600 or so listed American firms that had published remote-work policies. The authors found that variation in the stringency(严格) of these had no significant effect on the performance of the firms’ shares relative to those of their peers.
31. What’s the author's intention in citing the Amazon example
A. To put forward a new solution.
B. To justify a different working model.
C.To highlight an individual’s unique experience.
D. To illustrate the common trend among companies.
32.What does the sentence “For some companies, that maybe the point.” mean in paragraph 3
A.They tend to irritate employees on purpose.
B. They want to force employees back to office.
C. They aim to make staff leave willingly to cut costs.
D. They try to prevent talented staff from joining rivals.
33. What can be inferred about hybrid work from the text
A. It has aspects that worry bosses.
B. It definitely reduces employees' productivity.
C. It has no negative effects on company culture.
D. It is a perfect solution to balance employees' needs.
34. What can we learn from the study mentioned in the text
A. Investors are very concerned about the remote work policies of firms.
B. The stringency of remote work policies varies little among American firms.
C. Companies with strict remote-work policies perform better in the stock market.
D.The return-to-office orders had little effect on the performance of the firms’ shares.

Like the rest of your body, your immune system ages, too. ______35______Scientists haven’t found strong data to support any one pill or supplement to prevent this or give our immune systems a “boost.” But they have conducted plenty of research on how we can keep our immune systems healthy as we age.
Much of that requires going back to basics. Eating microbiome-friendly foods while minimizing red meat may help reduce inflammation and preserve a healthy gut microbiome, which in turn may help the immune system. ______36______One study showed that higher rates of physical activity were associated with a lower chance of community acquired pneumonia(肺炎). Prioritizing a good night's sleep helps as well. Use certain strategies like resetting your body clock and strategic napping to avoid middle-of-the-night wakeups.
______37______. Social isolation and loneliness might impair your immune system, and social connection may actually have benefits. For example, one large study in the United Kingdom and Finland found that loneliness was associated with a higher risk of severe infection requiring hospitalization.
______38______ In part, it could be because loneliness might intensify our sympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for our “fight or flight” response. This may influence our gene expression to preferentially express more bad inflammatory genes and decrease the expression of infection-fighting proteins.
There's no precise prescription or dosage for how much social connection is enough. But we know that staying engaged with others is important, just like it is for other aspects of well-being beyond immunity. As we look ahead to a new year, many people focus on improving their diet and exercise regimens. But it's important to also think about ways to foster more connections. ______39______.
There are lots of theories as to why this happens.
Regular moderate exercise also stimulates the immune system.
Social isolation can change the way our immune system operates.
Here are a few other ways to take care of our immune system as you age.
This contributes to higher rates of illnesses such as respiratory infections.
Consider taking a class, joining a book club, volunteering or reaching out to an old friend.
You might also be surprised to learn about another lifestyle intervention: social connection.

Dumb phones are making a comeback
It is hard to imagine life without a smartphone these days. Leave yours at home and you may find yourself lost, moneyless and cut off from social contact. Yet a market is also emerging for phones that are deliberately pea-brained. These dumb phones—confusingly called “feature phones”—account for just 2% of phone sales in America. But demand is growing.
In 2016, a Finnish firm, bought the rights to relaunch the devices of Nokia, whose basic phones once dominated the market. It says it is now selling “tens of thousands” of flip-phones a month in America. In May it re-released the Nokia 3210, a mainstay of many millennials’ teenage years, in Europe. It even has Snake, a classic mobile game.
Dumb phones today do not merely copy those of the past, though. Startups offer minimalist devices of their own. One example is the Light Phone, which is shaped like an iPod and has an e-ink screen like a Kindle. It also allows users to add optional “tools” including a podcast-player and a directions app.
What explains the return of the dumb phone One factor is anxiety over the impact of smartphones—and social-media apps in particular—on young people’s mental health. That is why a first-class British school, announced in July that it would bar its students from bringing smartphones to school, and would provide them with Nokia phones instead.
But plenty of grownups are also choosing dumb phones out of their own will. Jose Briones, who moderates a forum dedicated to dumb phones on a social-media site, switched to the Light Phone after growing alarmed at his soaring screen-time record. Other smartphone addicts are instead cutting down the use of their devices either by deleting apps or downloading ones that control screen time.
Giving up the supercharged connectivity of a smartphone can lead to panic at first. Christina Dinur, another dumb-phone convert, remembers wondering what to do with herself when waiting in a queue without her smartphone. But, she says, she “settled into it really quickly”. For some, it seems, a dumb phone can be a smart choice.
How will people feel if they leave their smartphones at home
What contributes to the return of the dump phone
Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
Dump phones are making a comeback, yet startups are just reproducing the old phones.
Will you choose a dump phone Why or why not?

40. They may feel lost, moneyless, and cut off from social contact, as smartphones are essential for navigation, digital payments, and communication in modern life.
41.Concerns about smartphones’ negative impact on mental health, especially among young people (e.g., schools banning smartphones). Besides, adults voluntarily switching to reduce screen time and digital addiction.
42. Dump phones are making a comeback, yet startups are just reproducing the old phones.
According to the passage, startups like Light Phone create new minimalist designs (e.g., e-ink screens, optional tools), not mere copies of old models.
43.(Sample answer 1 – Yes):
Yes, I would. A dumb phone helps reduce distractions and improve focus on real-life interactions. As the text shows, excessive smartphone use harms mental health, and minimalist phones offer a healthier balance.
(Sample answer 2 – No):
No, because smartphones provide essential functionalities like maps, online payments, and work tools. While dumb phones limit screen time, they sacrifice too much convenience for modern lifestyles.
