5 From ancient times, most of the letters were carried from one place to another by horse. 6 By the early 1900s, planes were used as a faster way to carry letters across places and around the world. As time went by, new inventions (发明) made it easier to reach friends and family in a short time.
7 Besides making calls, we can also do many things with them, such as taking photos, paying money and so on. Computers also have made some of the biggest changes in communication. 8 We can also chat with friends any time online.

Now in countries like the USA, more and more children seem to get lost in a “sea of digital technology (数字技术)”. As they use digital technology too much, they are losing their ability to do simple things. They can’t make toys themselves with hands or help Mum cook dinner. And worst of all, they seem to be losing interest in communicating with others.
“I have talked with a number of teachers. They care about the increasing numbers of young pupils who can play with computers or smartphones, but have few or no skills to make things.” said a teacher. “Many pupils can’t communicate with other pupils but their parents talk proudly of their ability to use a computer or a smartphone.”
Instead of playing with other children, more and more children are choosing to stay indoors and quietly play on a tablet (平板电脑) at weekends and after school. How can a child grow up to be a very good artist if he doesn’t learn how to use a paintbrush and develop his painting skill How can a child learn to make friends as he gets older if he doesn’t learn to communicate with others at a young age
We can use a stone to either break a window or build a house. Digital technology can be used for good or bad. We shouldn’t blame the children. We should help them make right choices. Life has gone mostly online for many people around the world. With more people going online these years, global Internet traffic has become a big problem. Between January and late March, a quarter of major cities in many countries experienced an increase in Internet traffic.
Video meetings, online classrooms and stay-at-home entertainment have become a lifeline to many people. This increase in traffic is testing the Internet’s strength. In March, major phone networks in the UK experienced mass failure. People were not able to take calls, receive texts or use mobile data.
In the USA, major telecommunications (电信) companies said, traffic was up 21 per cent month over month. Video streaming services have cut their picture qualities (质量) and download speeds to reduce network traffic jams.
China has seen an Internet traffic increase of around 50 per cent compared to 2021. The network speeds went down for a while. However, they returned soon afterwards and have been working well.
This is due to China’s work in building network infrastructure (基础设施), especially 5G technology. By the end of 2022, millions of 5G base stations had been built nationwide. This has given Chinese networks the power to withstand increased traffic.

Tourism probably started in Roman (罗马的) times. Rich Romans visited friends and family working in another part of the Roman Empire (帝国). But when the empire broke down, this kind of tourism stopped.
In the early 17th century, the idea of the “Grand Tour” was born. Rich young English people sailed across the English Channel (英吉利海峡). They visited the most beautiful and important European cities of the time, including Paris in France, and Rome and Venice (威尼斯) in Italy. Their tours lasted for two to four years, and the tourists stayed a few weeks or months in each city. The “Grand Tour” was an important part of young people’s education—but only for the rich.
In the 18th century, tourism began to change. For example, people in the UK started to visit some towns, such as Bath to “take the waters”. They believed that the water there was good for their health. So large and expensive hotels were built in these towns.
In the 19th century, travel became much more popular and faster. When the first railways were built in the 1820s, it was easier for people to travel between towns, so they started to spend their holidays by the sea. And some started to have holidays in the countryside as cities became larger, noisier and dirtier.
Travelling by sea also became faster and safer when the first steamships were built. People began to travel more to far away countries.
The 20th century saw cars become more and more popular among ordinary people. Planes were made larger, so ticket prices dropped and more people used them.
Thus tourism grew. In 1949, a Russian journalist Vladimir Raitz started a company called Horizon Holiday Group. The company organizes everything—plane tickets, hotel rooms, even food—and tourists pay for it all before they leave home. The package tour (包价旅游) and modern tourist industry was born.

Teachers say that the digital age has had a good influence (影响) and a not-so-good influence on American teenagers. More than 2,000 middle school teachers took an online survey. Researchers also spoke with teachers in some groups. Most teachers think the Internet and digital search tools have had a mostly positive influence on their students’ research habits and skills. But at the same time, some teachers also point out some problems in teenagers’ using digital search tools.
The Pew Internet Project did the survey with the College Board and the National Writing Project. Judy Buchanan is the director of the National Writing Project and a co-writer of the report. She says digital research tools are helping students learn more, and learn faster. “Both teachers and students really welcome these tools because they make learning exciting. And the goal is to really help students become creators of something meaningful (有意义的), and not just users of the online information.”
But one problem the survey found is that these technologies make teenagers have short attention spans (注意力持续时间). As there is lots of information about different subjects on the Internet, teenagers’ attention is easily drawn away from their research.
Another problem the survey found is that many students trust the information they find on the Internet too much. Judy Buchanan says these students have not developed the skills to judge (判断) the online information. They need to learn a lot to tell if the information is believable. It’s something that really has to be paid attention to.
One more problem the survey found is something that might not seem like a problem at all: being able to quickly find information online. Many students think “doing research” now means just doing a quick search on the Internet. They become less willing and able to work hard to find answers. That is, they are depending (依赖) too much on search tools and do not make enough use of printed books or research librarians.
Many teachers also say that the Internet makes it easy for students to copy work done by others instead of using their own abilities.

During a famine (饥荒), rich cook sent for twenty of the poorest children in the town and said to them, “In this basket there is a piece of bread for each of you. Take it and come back to me every day at this hour for more.”
In a hurry, the hungry children got together around the basket, and fought over the bread because each wanted the largest piece. At last they went away without even thanking the good cook. Mary, a poorly-dressed girl, did not fight with the other children, but stood quietly and waited. When the badly-behaved children had left, Mary took the smallest piece, which was all left in the basket. She kissed the cook’s hand and went home.
The next day, the children were as badly-behaved as before. Mary got a piece of bread almost half the size of the one she got on the first day. When she came home, her mother cut the bread open. Many new, shining pieces of silver fell out of it.
