Importance
in Chengdu, China
had a history of over 2,000 years
Li Bing designed it
three parts: Yuzui, Feishayan, and Baopingkou
Floods in rainy seasons:
use Yuzui and Feishayan / keep water from entering the inner river
clear sands
Not enough water in dry seasons:
use Yuzui and Feishayan / let water in
use Baopingkou / guide water into dry farms

Topic sentence 2: __________________________________ _____________________.
Supporting details: _________________________________ _________________________________________________ ________________________________________________.
Another challenge is not enough water for farms in dry seasons
During dry seasons, people use Yuzui and Feishayan to let water into the inner river. People also built Baopingkou, a channel, to guide water into dry farms

How can we overcome big challenges of engineering
Task: Make a building plan. Your school has organized an event called “Little Planners, Better Life”. You are going to create an engineering project based on the map. You have to choose a suitable site, identify possible challenges, provide solutions, and prepare a presentation. There are two models.
Little Planners, Better Life
1
power station
2
railway station

We’d like to build a railway station at Site 2. Although the site is far away from the city centre, there are houses and office buildings nearby. So we have to deal with the problem of noise pollution. We plan to plant trees and build sound-blocking walls to reduce train noise.
We plan to build a power station at Site 1. The place is at the upper part of the river and is not packed with many buildings. So we can use water and wind to produce electricity. Studying the weather report will help us decide the location of the power station!
Work in groups. Study the map and decide what kind of engineering project you want to build. Search the internet to gather information about the suitable location, possible challenges and solutions.
We’d like to build _________ at Site __ because _______________ ________________________________________.
Possible challenges
Possible challenges
a pet park

the area is covered
with grass and is close to several housing estates
We need to keep the park clean.
We need to make the park a pleasant and safe place for pets and their owners.
We will set up waste stations and ask people to obey the rules when walking their dogs.
We’ll also provide toys for pets to play with on the grass.
Exchange and analyse the information you have collected within the group.
Discuss the possible challenges and solutions to reach an agreement.
TEEN SKILL
Leaders give tasks to each group member. Each person will be responsible for a specific part of the presentation.
