It’s every teenager’s nightmare (恶梦): exam time. During the last three days of the term, we had six exams.
My easiest exam was maths. All of its questions were from earlier exams.
The biology exam was hard. At first, I thought I had failed it. It asked lots of things we never studied in class, so we could use our textbooks. But there wasn’t enough time to check every question. I guessed on many of them. But my teacher said I did well.
On the career (职业)planning and computer applications (申请)exam, we had a lot to do: a PowerPoint presentation (展示), a book report and a class evaluation (评估). I felt like I needed more time, but some of my classmates didn’t think so much. They just quickly wrote down some answers and then played games.
I don’t think I did very well in the English exam. We had to write an essay (读后感)about books we’ve read in class. But I didn’t study enough.
At our school, we can “Test out” of some classes. That means students can study by themselves and then take a class exam. If they pass, they don’t have to take the class, I tested out of both computer and health classes.
Studying for those exams was terrible. Those classes go for six months, but I had to teach myself everything in three weeks. Also, I had to do three big projects at the same time. I watched no TV for almost three weeks! I am so glad it’s all over, and now it’s the summer holiday.
For my classmates, it will be two and a half months of fun without school or homework. But I’m a Chinese, and you know what Chinese parents do with their kids’ free time: still more homework.

Maybe you are an ordinary student. You probably think you will never be a top student. This is not surely so, however. Anyone can become a better student if he or she wants to. Here is how.
Plan your time carefully
When planning your week, you should make a list of things that you have to do. After making the list, you should make a schedule of your time. First plan your time: eating, sleeping, dressing, etc. Then decide a good, regular time for studying. Don’t forget to set aside enough time for enjoyment. A weekly schedule may not solve all the problems, but it will force you to realize what is happening to your time.
Find a good place to study
Look around the house for a good study area. Keep this place, which may be a desk or simply a corner of your room, free of everything but study materials. No games, radios or TV! When you sit down to study, put your mind into the subject.
Make good use of your time in class
Take advantage of class time to listen to everything the teacher says. Real listening in class means less work later. Taking class notes will help you remember what the teacher says.Study regularly
When you get home from schools, go over your notes. Review the important points that your teacher has referred to in class. If you know what your teacher is going to discuss the next day, read the material. This will help you understand the next class. If you do these things regularly, the material will become more meaningful, and you will remember it longer.
Develop a good attitude toward the tests
The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject. It can help you remember your new knowledge. The world won’t end if you don’t pass a test, so don’t be overly worried.
There are other methods that might help you with your studying. You will probably discover many others after you have tried these.

In the United States, when one becomes rich, he wants people to know it. And even if he does not become very rich, he wants people to think that he is. That is what “keeping up with the Joneses” is about. It is the story of someone who tried to look as rich as his neighbours.
The expression was first used in 1913 by a young American called Arthur Momand. He told this story about himself. He began earning $125 a week at the age of 23. That was a lot of money in those days. He got married and moved with his wife to a very wealthy neighbourhood outside New York City. When he saw that rich people rode horses, Momand went horseback riding every day. When he saw that rich people had servants. Momand and his wife also hired a servant and gave big parties for their new neighbours.
It was like a race, but one could never finish this race because one was always trying to keep up. The race ended for Momand and his wife when they could no longer pay for their new way of life. They moved back to an apartment(公寓房间) in New York City.
Momand looked around him and noticed that many people do things just to keep up with rich lifestyle of their neighbours. He saw the funny side of it and started to write a series(系列) of short stories. He called it “Keeping up with the Joneses’ because ‘Jones’ is a very common name in the United States.” Keeping up with the Joneses’ came to mean keeping up with rich lifestyle of the people around you. Momand’s series appeared in different newspapers across the country for over 28 years.
People never seem to get tired of keeping up with the Joneses. And there are “Jonses” in every city of the world. But one must get tired of trying to keep up with the Joneses because no matter what one does, Mr. Jones always seems to be ahead.

You sigh when you are unhappy. Your parents give a thumbs-up for good grades. Soccer players high-five after a victory. These are examples of body language. It uses the movement or position of your body. The way that you stand, your hand gestures, the look on your face—these are all ways to communicate without words. In fact, body language plays an important role in our daily life.
According to US scientist Edward T.Hall, in a conversation of 50 people, 65percent of people would use body language. Another 23 experiments were done by other scientists, and they found that in some cases, people can express themselves without any words at all. For example, if your friend asks you to come on a picnic, you could give him an “OK” gesture without saying anything.
Sometimes, your words say one thing but your body language says another. You may touch your face without noticing when you tell a lie. However, just like spoken language, body language doesn’t have the same meaning around the world. It can have a totally different meaning in different cultures. While in some Asian countries, it is rude to look straight at a person when you talk. But in the US and Europe, eye contact means you are interested in what someone is saying.
Another example is greetings. In some Asian cultures, it’s common to bow one’s head or body. However, in European countries, people may kiss on the face. Maoris (毛利人), the local people in New Zealand, touch noses as a greeting.
It is necessary to learn body language in different cultures, so next time before you travel, you’d better learn some body languages.

The Chinese pingfeng (folding screen) is an ancient invention and traditional Chinese furniture (家具). Its earliest common use dates from the Han Dynasty. The term pingfeng means protection from wind, showing its purpose at the very beginning.
As time passes, it has been made into different sizes with colourful paintings. On screens usually appears a dragon (龙). It stands for light, growth and life-giving water. The peacock (孔雀), a beautiful bird, can be seen on screens too. Beautiful flowers, which mean wealth and good luck, are also chosen as a popular form of the pingfeng.

When a man paid a visit, she might take a secret look at him from a screen behind which she would be completely hidden. Her father would discuss poems with the young man and ask him to create one. If the daughter and her father were satisfied with the young man’s poem and his looks, she might agree to take him as a husband.

I am Benjamin Lou, Chinese name Lou Yingen, who is a 20-year-old Chinese-American mathematician living with Spinal Muscular Atrophy(SMA) (脊髓性肌萎缩症), and now I am studying at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States.
Although I’ve never taken a physical step on this planet, I can fly in the space of math and physics freely.
Diagnosed with SMA, I have had no ability to walk, eat, or use the restroom without help since I was a baby. But these things can’t prevent me from getting unlimited freedom in the areas of math and physics.
When I was a 4th grader, I became interested in math and learned about calculus (微积分). By the 5th grade, I scored in the top one percent on the AMC 10, a competition aimed at high school sophomores (高中二年级学生). In the 8th and the 9th grades, I qualified (取得资格) for the USA Mathematics Olympiad, being among the top 250 young mathematicians in the nation. A similar qualification for the USA Physics Olympiad soon followed. My love for the mathematical sciences led me to MIT in the end, where I major in physics and math.
It is clear to me that math isn’t only about numbers. It’s actually the language of the universe, a beautiful way to describe the logical patterns (逻辑模式) that exist in everything around us. And it is this same language that has allowed me to transcend the physical limitations (限制) of my body. As time goes by, even as my muscles weakened, my interest in understanding the world has only deepened. The dragon is a great animal in Chinese culture. It is believed to bring the wind and rain. It is said that every year on the second day of the second lunar (阴历的) month, the dragon wakes up from its winter sleep and raises its head. Because of this, the day is called “Dragon Head-Raising Day ” (Longtaitou). This year, it falls on March 11.
After Longtaitou, there would be more rain. And rain is very important to farming. So old people believed that Longtaitou was the start of spring and farming.
People have many ways to celebrate the Longtaitou festival. The most popular one is to have a haircut. Many believe that a haircut during the first lunar month may bring bad luck to your uncles—mainly your mother’s brothers. They hope getting a haircut on Longtaitou can bring good luck.
Among Chinese people’s festival traditions, there is always a place for food. During the Longtaitou festival, people eat food named after dragons. Noodles are called dragon’s beard (longxu). Dumplings are dragon’s ears (long’er). And spring rolls are dragon’s scales (longlin).
People also hold activities like dragon dancing on the day. In some places in Shandong province, people make dragon lanterns (灯笼) too. Small reed (芦苇) boats go down the rivers and carry the lanterns, which stand for people’s best wishes and good luck.

THE IMPORTANCE OF PLAY
Games are not a waste of time. By playing games, children learn and practice important skills that can be useful in the future. Young children learn to follow rules, wait their turn, work with others and accept winning or losing politely. Older children develop thinking skills, including using a strategy (策略) and planning ahead. Psychologists say strategy games can help develop the frontal lobes (额叶) of the brain, which are responsible for skills like planning, organizing and decision-making.
Playing board games can improve children’s attention and make it wider. But to be successful, players must play the game to the end without any interruptions (干扰), like checking their phones or leaving the table for a snack. Playing board games or card games is also a great way to take a break from screens, which can be harmful if used too much.
Playing games is not just for kids, it’s also good for adults. They need to make time in their day for enjoyment. This kind of activity can stimulate (刺激) the release of endorphins (内啡肽), which can make people feel happier. Playing games with family and friends also helps lower depression and stress. Sharing laughter and fun while playing games not only improves relationships and brings people closer but also makes brain work better.
Playing games can also help you think more creatively. Taking a break for game-playing can also make you work better later. After playing a game, your brain can relax and be sharper when you go back to work.
The writer, George Bernard Shaw, famously said, “We don’t stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.” It follows then, that play keeps you young. So make some time to play a game today!
