I’m Maria, an exchange student in a junior high school in Wuhan. I have three roses here: a red one, a white one and a yellow one. These roses are to thank three groups of people.
I give the red rose to my friends. When I started school here, my Chinese was not good and some of my mistakes were very funny. I once tried to say “xiexie”, but I said “xiaxia” instead. But they didn’t laugh at me. They taught me to say many things in Chinese and kindly invited me to join them. Today thanks to their kindness, my Chinese is much better and we have become friends.
I give the white rose to my teachers, who have taught me that there is no success without effort. When I started running in the 800-meter race, I always finished last and I just wanted to give up. But the P. E. teacher, Ms. Huang, helped me a lot. She ran along with me and she said to me, “You will never succeed if you give up!” I’ve learned to try my best, not only with running but with whatever else I do.
I give the yellow rose to my parents for teaching me that love is about trust. When I wanted to learn the violin, my father told me that I should work much harder at math. I was disappointed. However, on the morning of my birthday, I woke up to find a beautiful violin at my bedside. There was a note from my father: “I am sure you will be good at music. I believe that you will be better at math.”
I truly show my thanks to my friends, teachers and parents for the three most important things that I have learned from them. These three things are friendship, effort and trust.

People use body language almost every day. What is body language How does it work
Want to speak with your body Use body language! A “V” gesture shows happiness, victory or peace. Opening the mouth wide shows surprise. This is body language.
When you speak with others, body language is important. Scientists say we do 65 per cent of our communication with body language. For example, when you make faces, people think you are naughty (淘气的) or shy. Frowning (皱眉) shows you are angry. Sometimes your words say one thing, but your body languages say another. For example, you touch your face while telling a lie.
In different cultures, the same body language may have different meanings. Nodding your head in most countries means “Yes”. But in some parts of Greece and Turkey, it means “No”.
Different body languages can also mean the same thing. Take “hello” for example. The French like to kiss cheeks (脸颊) to say “hello”. But the Japanese bow (鞠躬). Maoris (毛利人) in New Zealand touch noses with each other when they meet.

Introverted people, or “I-type” people (“内向的人”或“I人”), often feel shy or nervous around many people. But there are ways to feel better.
Start small Instead of trying to talk in big groups, introverts can speak to just one person. This helps them feel comfortable. They can talk about easy topics like hobbies or favorite books.
Practicing Introverts can practice saying hello to themselves in the mirror or pretend (假装) to have conversations with family or friends. This can make real conversations easier later on.
Choose quiet places Introverts often like quiet places better than loud ones. A small get-together at home might feel better than a big party.
Take breaks It’s okay to take short breaks. If introverts feel too nervous at an event, they can step away for a few minutes to relax. This helps them feel ready to join in again.
If you can start as I suggested above, introverted students can slowly get better at dealing with social situations and start to enjoy being with others more.

A group of comics called “Tiny Eyes” go popular on the Internet. With these comics, Chinese artist Cao Siyu shares the differences between Chinese culture and Western culture.
Cao Siyu comes from Beijing. She spent the last 10 years in France, the UK and the USA.“Many foreign people that I met were interested in China.” She explained. “But most of their ideas about China are out of date. I hope I can change the image of China in foreigners’ mind.” That is why Cao Siyu put her idea of “Tiny Eyes” comics into practice.
By bringing words and images together, the Chinese artist tells stories in a simple yet powerful way. She shares Chinese People’s daily life and compares how differently people act in the same situation.
In one comic, for example, she compared French cutlery (餐具) with Chinese one: While French people use eight different forks and knives for a meal, Chinese people can make it with only a pair of chopsticks. And in another comic, Cao Siyu made it clear how people from different cultures express love. She wrote below the comic, “Chinese people are not used to saying ‘I love you, Mum’. Instead, they show their love in actions.”
Cao Siyu provides a new way for foreigners to know her motherland, and her works have gathered about 20 thousand fans on the Internet. “People from one culture may not be able to fully understand another. But we can listen to each other.” she said.
