Unit 1 Honesty and responsibility
Reading (IⅠ)
By the end of this section, you are going to:
identify the writing techniques of the short story;
appreciate the language points of the short story;
develop a deeper understanding about honesty and responsibility.
Detailed Reading
Analyse the characterizations of Jimmy and Bob.
Character Evidence Interpretation
Jimmy The policeman on the beat walked along the street as he always did. (line 1)
“It sounds pretty interesting,” said the policeman. “Rather a long time between meetings, though. Haven’t you heard from your friend since you left ” (lines 20–21)
“I’ll be on my way,” said the policeman. “Hope your friend turns up.” (line 28)
“I was at the appointed place on time.” (line 56)
Anyhow I couldn’t arrest you myself, so I got a plain-clothes man to do the job. (lines 57–58)
He is a dutiful policeman.
He already recognized Bob’s scar, but he pretends to be a stranger and asks a question to see if Bob knows anything about his recent situation. This indicates that Jimmy is smart and knows how to deal with a criminal.
He is careful in what he does. He is considering the best way to bring down “Silky” Bob without raising any suspicion.
He is loyal to their friendship, for he lives up to his promise.
He insists on his principles as a policeman, but also wants to be nice to his old friend. He still sees Bob as his friend but he cannot fail in his duty.
Detailed Reading
Analyse the characterizations of Jimmy and Bob.
Character Evidence Interpretation
Bob The light showed a pale face, with keen eyes, a square jaw and a little white scar near his right eyebrow. (lines 10–11)
His scarfpin was a large diamond, oddly set. (lines 11–12)
The waiting man pulled out a handsome watch, set with small diamonds. (line 26) The next morning I was to leave New York and travel to the West to make my fortune. (lines 15–16)
“Well, we kept in touch for a year or two...and it’s worthwhile if my old partner turns up.” (lines 22–25)
His pale face shows that he might be a bit anxious about this meeting. Keen eyes and a square jaw indicate that he has strong willpower. His scar implies that he has a dangerous and violent life.
He is showy. His love for luxuries is apparent in his clothing and accessories.
He is ambitious. He is different from Jimmy, who chose to stay in this city.
He trusts Jimmy absolutely, though he hasn’t seen him for twenty years. He is loyal to their friendship, for he has come such a long way to keep the appointment.
Detailed Reading
Analyse the characterizations of Jimmy and Bob.
Character Evidence Interpretation
Bob “It has given me everything I asked it for.” (line 37)
The man from the West was beginning to outline the history of his career. (lines 41–43) “As I suspected, you’re not Jimmy Wells,” he said, impatiently with anger. (lines 47–48)
“You’ve been under arrest for ten minutes, ‘Silky’ Bob. Chicago police thought you might have dropped over our way and wired us.” (lines 51–53)
He is egoistic and boastful. He confidently boasts about his success in the West. He is also less defensive in front of his old friend because he trusts him, which is why he tells “Jimmy” his stories honestly.
Maybe he was already suspicious about the other man’s identity when he saw how tall the man was, but he told him all those stories about making his fortune anyway. This shows how happy he was to see his old friend. But as a criminal, he was smart enough to detect something was wrong. When he saw the tall man’s face, his suspicions were finally confirmed.
He chose the wrong path in the pursuit of making his fortune.
Discussion
I would try to handle the situation as calmly and effectively as Jimmy Wells, but I’m not sure I could. I might have trouble hiding my shock the moment I recognize Bob’s scar. However, I think it might be a good idea to tell Bob who I am and try to convince him to surrender. At least Bob would know that I am being honest with him.
If you were Jimmy Wells, what would you do when you found out Bob was the wanted criminal
Discussion
Jack pointed out Dean’s dishonest behaviour because as the monitor and his best friend, he thought it was his responsibility to remind Dean and he expected Dean to behave responsibly. I think Jack is a responsible and honest person. If Dean cheats again, it only means they don’t share the same values. Plus, as the monitor, it is Jack’s duty to report Dean’s wrongdoing to the teacher. If this happens, hopefully Dean will learn his lesson and appreciate Jack’s reasons for reporting his dishonest behaviour.
Jack caught Dean cheating on a test by looking up answers on his mobile phone. As the monitor and Dean’s best friend, Jack pointed out his wrongdoing after the test and asked him not to do it again. However, Dean didn’t take it seriously and asked Jack not to tell anyone. What should Jack do if Dean cheats again

Every morning when I go to the school bus stop, I see my neighbour Jane, who is tall and lean. As she races by, she always waves to me and smiles widely showing her bright white teeth. Her long dark-brown hair is tied up in a ponytail. It swings from side to side as she takes big running strides. Whether the day is sunny or cloudy, Jane goes for a run. Her athletic build and fast pace always impress me.
