To live a life of honesty and integrity is a responsibility of every decent person.
—Noam Chomsky
1. How do you understand the quote from Noam Chomsky
In my opinion, the quote means that a decent person should be honest and have integrity. This can be seen as his or her responsibility.
Lead-in
Yes, I believe I am honest and responsible most of the time. I never lie to my parents and my friends. However, I wasn’t quite responsible for my studies at the beginning of the first term in senior high school. It was difficult for me to fit in with this new school and the new curriculum. I had failed several tests before I started to seriously consider my studies.
2. Do you think you are an honest and responsible person
Lead-in
At school, some students plagiarize others’ homework or cheat in tests. Some fail to hand in their assignments on time or spend little time on their studies. All these acts can lead to undesired or even fake academic performance. Most importantly, they prevent students from developing into adults with strong moral values.
3. Can you give examples of dishonest or irresponsible acts and point out the consequences of those acts
4. Can you list some other moral values Why are they important
Moral values include integrity, loyalty, respect, kindness, humility, generosity, compassion, etc.
They are important because they are connected with the principles of right and wrong. They help us make choices that bring benefits to ourselves and everyone else.
Welcome to the unit
Welcome to the unit
Honesty and responsibility are at the core of our moral values.
Read the lists below about honesty and responsibility and discuss the following questions in pairs.
Honesty and responsibility are inevitably connected to one another. For example, you are acting responsibly if you take agreements seriously, and practising honesty when you keep promises and do not make promises you cannot keep. When you are prepared to admit mistakes and think about how your actions will affect others, you are showing your trustworthiness. All these actions demonstrate the relationship between acting honestly and responsibly.
What do you think is the relationship between honesty and responsibility according to the descriptions
Welcome to the unit
Practising honesty includes accepting yourself. If you do that, you will not feel pressured to create untruths, for you will be comfortable with who you are. In turn, others will respect you for your honesty and know that they can trust you.
Practising responsibility also requires the willingness to clear up misunderstandings with others. Often situations arise in which you and the other person may misunderstand one another and want to react negatively. However, the responsible action is to have a nice discussion and explain your thoughts. Taking this action shows a willingness not only to work through a difficult circumstance, but also to establish good relations with others.
What other descriptions of honesty and responsibility can you add to the lists

Reading (I)
Before Reading
From time to time, people find themselves in situations where they have to make a difficult choice concerning their moral values. The short story below is about someone who has to make such a choice. Before you read the story, think about the following questions:
What is the most difficult choice you have made in your life so far
Do you think time can change a person Why or why not
1. What is the most difficult choice you have made in your life so far
Before Reading
I used to play for our school’s basketball team. We would have regular training sessions at least three times a week, with games every other weekend. Since it took up too much time, I was struggling to cope with my studies, which resulted in my average academic performance. My parents were not happy, and neither was I. At the end of last term, I decided to drop out of the team. It was such a difficult choice because I had a real enthusiasm for basketball. Luckily, I haven’t given up basketball altogether, and I play for fun with my friends when I have some free time.
2. Do you think time can change a person Why or why not
Before Reading
I think time can change a person. Our bodies change physically over time. Besides, people are capable of learning from the experiences they have had and the people they have met along the way, so their ideas and behaviour may be influenced accordingly.
2. Do you think time can change a person Why or why not
Before Reading
I don’t think time can change a person. Even though a person’s body shape can change a lot over time, certain physical features, especially on the face, generally won’t change unless he or she undergo plastic surgery for some reason. Besides, a person’s most basic nature and characteristics are deeply rooted in his or her early life experiences; they tend to remain more or less the same throughout the person’s life.
What do you know about O. Henry Do you like his stories
O. Henry was a famous American writer. He was good at writing short stories with surprising and profound endings. I like his stories, because they always give me new ideas about humans and life. I especially love his stories The Last Leaf and The Gift of the Magi.
Before Reading
Pay attention to the title and the illustrations on pages 2 and 3, and predict what the story might be about.
Before Reading
The title and the silhouettes on page 2 indicate that this story may involve two men and their story before and after twenty years. The man on the left looks like a policeman. The one on the right looks like someone who may not be that righteous. He stands in front of a door of a store, which may be the location where the story happens. The illustration on page 3 shows two men on the street, probably the
same ones in the silhouettes. Judging from their outfits and movements, I guess the policeman is about to arrest the shorter man, who seems to be very shocked. I wonder what happened between them.
Pay attention to the title and the illustrations on pages 2 and 3, and predict what the story might be about.

1. How do you like the ending of this short story
Post Reading
I found the ending of this short story very surprising. I never expected an arrest to happen. It is a clever twist to the story’s ending, which is the unique style of O. Henry.
2. What do you think is the message of this short story
I believe the message of this story is that a person’s responsibility to society should be stronger than a friendship.
3. Supposing the story did not end here, what would happen next
Post Reading
“Silky” Bob shook his head in disbelief. He’d spoken to Jimmy, yet failed to recognize his old friend’s face and voice. Bob felt disappointed thinking about how Jimmy pretended to be a stranger to him, but still wanted to believe that Jimmy was the truest and most reliable fellow in the world.
“Could I speak to Jimmy, I mean Patrolman Wells ” Bob asked, on arriving at the station.
A few minutes later, Jimmy appeared, and Bob could see sadness in his eyes.
Post Reading
“Hello, Bob. I’m glad you kept our appointment after twenty years, but I’m sorry it had to end this way.”
Bob hung his head in shame, “Me too. Seeing you again has reminded me of who I used to be. I should’ve stayed here with you twenty years ago. At least you would have helped me distinguish right from wrong.”
Jimmy put his hand on Bob’s shoulder and said, “I’ll always be your friend and I’ll help you be the good old Bob again. The first step is to take responsibility for your illegal actions.”
Bob nodded and walked into his jail cell as the door was locked behind him.
3. Supposing the story did not end here, what would happen next
