第三部分 阅读理解(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
A
Aggressive pedestrians are in fact as dangerous as careless drivers. They cause traffic accidents, injury and death.
These dangerous walkers can be seen in any big city all over the world. About 69% of last year’s pedestrian deaths in the US occurred in urban areas. They cross streets ignoring “DON’T WALK” signals, suddenly appear without warning from behind parked vehicles, walk slowly at crossroads with cell phones attached to heads, blocking traffic.
These pedestrians and drivers share a common disregard for the rules of the road, both for selfish reasons. The drivers believe in the power of their machines. If their machines can go faster, they believe they have the right to go faster. If their machines are bigger, they believe they have the right to push smaller vehicles aside. Aggressive pedestrians, on the other hand, believe in the primacy of the individual, the idea that they are first in any environment, under any circumstances, even when they are on foot in a roaring tide of steel and rubber.
Last year, an estimated 5,220 pedestrians died in traffic accidents. Some 69,000 pedestrians were injured. On average, that worked out to one pedestrian killed in a traffic crash every 101 minutes, and one injured every eight minutes.
The good news is that the accident rate is dropping. For example, the number of pedestrians killed last year was 24 percent less than the number killed in traffic accidents a decade earlier. The bad news is that the basic causes of pedestrian deaths remain pretty much the same----disregard for traffic signals, inattention and crossing roads under the influence of alcohol and drugs. Alcohol, in fact, was involved in 46 percent of the traffic accidents that resulted in pedestrian deaths. Of those, 31 percent of the pedestrians were found to be drunk.
The bottom line is that the pedestrians must do more to protect their lives as well as the lives of other road users. They can start by obeying traffic signals, using marked cross-walks and calling a cab when they’ve had too much to drink.
56. The passage is mainly about _____.
A. how aggressive pedestrians cause traffic accidents
B. why so many Americans were killed on roads last year
C. what the traffic rules of the road about pedestrians were
D. who are to blame for pedestrian deaths, drunk drivers or the aggressive pedestrians
57. What is the pedestrians’ selfish reason for traffic jams
A. They know all drivers are skilled and with great care.
B. They believe individuals are always first.
C. They think traffic rules have nothing to do with them.
D. They guess all vehicles will slow down at crossroads.

Last week I visited one of my old neighborhoods in Washington D.C.I had not been there for twenty years and as I walked along the street, my mind was flooded by memories of the past. I saw the old apartment building where I had lived and the playground where I had played. As I viewed these once familiar surroundings, images of myself as a child there came to mind. However, what I saw and what I remembered were not the same. I sadly realized that the best memories are those left untouched.
My old apartment building, as I remember, was bright and alive. It was more than just a place to live. It was a movie house, a space station, or whatever my young mind could imagine. I would steal away with my friends and play in the basement. This was always exciting because it was so cool and dark, and there were so many things there to hide among. There was a small river in the back of the building. We would go there to lie in the shade of trees and enjoy ourselves.
However, what I saw was completely different. The apartment building was now in disrepair. What was once more than a place to live looked hardly worth living in. The windows were all broken. The once clean walls were covered with dirty marks. The river was hardly recognizable. The water was polluted and the trees and flowers were all dead. The once sweet-smelling river now smelled terrible. It was really heartbreaking to see all this.
I do not regret having seen my old neighborhood. However, I do not think my innocent childhood memories can ever be the same. I suppose it is true when they say, “You can never go home again.”

D. he had pleasant memories of his old neighborhood
59. How did the writer feel when he visited his old neighborhood in Washington D.C.
A. Very sad. B. Quite excited. C. Very regretful. D. Greatly surprised.
60. On his visit to his hometown, the writer found the old apartment building __________.
A. had been repaired B. seemed unfit to live in
C. could hardly be recognized D. looked dirty and smelt horrible
61. “You can never go home again” in the last sentence of the passage means that _________.
A. a visit to one's hometown will bring back many sad memories
B. one should never revisit his hometown after many years of absence
C. one will never find his hometown the same as it was in his childhood memory
D. a visit to one's hometown will bring back one's pleasant memories of home

People who spend more pre-bedtime hours using the Internet or watching television are more likely to report that they don’t get enough sleep, even though they sleep almost as long as people who spend fewer pre-bedtime hours in front of a computer or television screen, survey findings show.
“While many people use electronic media, such as the Internet, it should be noted that the longer media use before sleep can trigger (self-perceived) insufficient sleep,” lead researcher Dr Nakamori Suganuma, of Osaka University, Japan, told the reporter.
He and colleagues obtained data on self-perceived sleep problems and the use of electronic media prior to bedtime from a total of 5,875 Japanese respondents in two separate Internet-based surveys. Their findings are published in the journal Sleep and Biological Rhythms.
Nearly half of the respondents associated their lack of sleep with electronic media use before bedtime. Those reporting longer electronic media use were also more likely to report insufficient sleep.
Overall, 29 percent of light users (less than 1.5 hours) listed electronic media use as a possible cause of their insufficient sleep. By comparison, 40 percent of medium users (1.5 to 3 hours) and 54 percent of heavy users (more than 3 hours) said the same.
However, longer Internet and television use before bedtime did not correlate with less actual sleep. While heavy users averaged about 3 more hours in front of computer or television screens than light users, the heavy users averaged only about 12 minutes less pre-workday sleep time than light users.
Notably, Suganuma said, “Internet use affected self-perceived insufficient sleep more than TV watching ... not only in younger Internet users but also in middle-aged or aged Internet users.”
Up to 38 percent of the respondents listed accessing the Internet far into the night as a possible cause for their sleep disturbance, while about 25 percent said watching. television far into the night caused their sleep problems.
The findings suggest that while heavy computer and television use before bedtime has a small effect on sleep duration, it may have a more significant effect on “sleep demand and sleep quality,” Suganuma notes.

Teens mirror negative features of mom’s friendships
The manner by which a mother interacts with her friends serves as a role model for how an adolescent child develops his/her own peer friendships. Unfortunately, teens often pick up on the negative elements in a relationship, such as conflict and antagonism, and then copy these attitudes into their own relationships.
The new study investigated a previously understudied association—how a parent’s friendships influence the emotional well-being of their adolescent children. For the study, doctoral student Gary Glick and Amanda Rose, Ph.D., studied the development of friendships and other peer relationships during adolescence and their impact on psychological adjustment. They found that adolescents may mimic the negative characteristics of their mothers’ relationships in their own peer-to-peer friendships suggesting that mothers can serve as role models for their adolescents during formative years.
Additional findings suggest that adolescents internalize their reactions to their mothers’ conflict with adult friends which may lead to anxiety and depression.
Previous research of this type focused on elementary-aged children, but MU researchers wanted to expand their study to focus on the formative adolescent years. Youth ranging in age from 10 to 17 and their mothers were polled separately to measure perceived positive and negative friendship qualities in both groups.
Results showed that positive friendship qualities were not always imitated by adolescents; however, negative and antagonistic relationship characteristics exhibited by mothers were much more likely to be mimicked by the youth studied. “We know that conflict is a normal part of any relationship —be it a relationship between a parent and a child, or a mother and her friends —and we’re not talking physical altercations but verbal conflicts, ” Glick said.
“But being exposed to high levels of such conflict generally isn’t going to be good for children. Parents should consider whether they are good role models for their children especially where their friends are concerned. When things go awry, parents should talk with their children about how to act with their friends, but more specifically, how not to act.”
66. What does the underlined word “mimic” in the second paragraph most probably mean
A. adopt B. influence C. copy D. change

B. The present research is about pupils of all age ranges
C. Many adolescent pupils nowadays are living separately with their mothers
D. The new study only measured negative friendship qualities of mothers and children
69. What can we conclude from the new study
A. The researchers carried out the study of this kind for the first time
B. The teenagers always react to their mothers behaviour very obviously
C. The teenagers were investigated together with their mothers
D. The teenagers imitate more negative models than positive one from their mothers
70. What suggestion is made by the author to some mothers who have conflict with their friends
A. Parents should make friends with their children’s friends.
B. Parents should force their children to do what they are told to.
C. Parents should discuss some dos and don’ts about friend-making with their children
D. Parents should expose their children to as much conflict as they can
第四部分:任务型阅读(共10 小题;每小题1 分, 满分10 分)
As the Internet has become widely used, the online bookstore has gained much popularity with consumers, which have a vital influence on the survival of many private small—and medium—sized physical bookshops, a cultural landmark in the cities in China.
Apart from a campaign, “saving physical stores”, many Chinese politicians and scholars have also urged the government to adopt measures to prevent bookstores from closing down their businesses, because unlike shops selling other goods, physical bookstores play the important social role of passing down knowledge and culture to younger generations.
Besides tax cut, the government should also take other measures to support and encourage the development of such bookstores.
Online bookshops are popular because they offer customers easier access to books, more attractive prices, and delivery service. Readers can buy almost any book sitting at home.
Physical bookstores have actually become “the exhibition halls” of online bookstores. People read and select books in physical bookstores, and then buy them from online bookstores.
However, physical bookstores have their own advantages. The physical bookstores make people feel the existence of culture. Entering a bookstore is like absorbing various elements of culture. For example, they offer the choice of feeling a real book rather than just the chance to see the cover and read a few introductory lines.
But they can also offer lower prices, sales promotions and better service, and organize readers’ club and other activities to attract more booklovers. A citywide delivery service could make it more convenient for readers to buy books from them. Moreover, the physical bookstores can make use of new technologies to improve their services, develop their online sales and expand their business.

阅读下面的短文,然后按照要求写一篇150词左右的英语短文。
Children in kindergarten are learning social skills. For this reason, it’s important to tell the children what will make them become good citizens when they grow up. It’s up to parents, teachers and all others involved with a kid to teach these skills.
Teaching kids to pick up things by themselves is a good way to teach them not to throw things on the ground. For example, if a class has to make paper cutouts (剪下的图样), after cutting, have the children pick up the wastepaper and place it in the wastebasket.
The golden rule of good citizenship should be taught at this age. The rule is “One should treat others as one would like others to treat oneself”. Teachers should ask their students how they want to be treated. There are many answers, such as not being treated in bad manners. The teacher should explain that others don’t like to be scared, so you should not scare others either.
Following the laws is good citizenship. Proper games can be played in the classroom. Games have rules, and all students in the class should follow the rules of the games. If a child doesn’t want to follow, it is up to the teacher to explain them to the child. Teaching children about following rules should help them understand the need to obey the law when they become adults.

读写任务:
The writer illustrates that it is important to teach children some skills of becoming good citizens. Therefore, he suggests teaching children to pick up things by themselves, to respect others and follow the laws.
As far as I am concerned, a civilized citizen is supposed to respect others. In public places, such as restaurants, stations or hospitals, a civilized citizen would not speak or talk loudly. Besides, a civilized citizen ought to be always ready to reach out their helping hands. Last but not the least, a civilized citizen should be aware of the significance of obeying the law.
As a senior high school student, I will do what I can to become a civilized citizen in my daily life. For example, I will pick up rubbish on the ground and put it into the dustbin. On my way to school, I will follow the traffic rules. All in all, I will do what I am expected to do. Only in this way can we make our hometown a more comfortable place for all of us to live in.
